Ferula violacea Korovin, an endemic Tajikistani plant with purported medicinal properties, remains understudied. This study employs untargeted metabolomics to characterize the metabolite profiles of ethanol extracts and juices from F. violacea roots and seeds. In total, 540 distinct metabolites are putatively identified, 419 of which are previously unreported in the Ferula genus, representing a substantial expansion of its known chemical diversity. The most abundant metabolites are terpenoids, amino acid derivatives, and alkaloids. A particularly abundant group of daucane sesquiterpenoids, sharing a common (6-methyl-azulen-4-yl) cyclohexanecarboxylate substructure, is identified, including known metabolites such as ferutidin and ferutinin. Comparative analysis reveals organ-specific metabolic …

Organic acids, as natural metabolites, play crucial roles in human metabolism and health. Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), a pivotal mediator in immune regulation and inflammation, is a key therapeutic target. We evaluated ten organic acids as TNF modulators using in silico molecular docking, followed by detailed ADMET (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity) profiling and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for three lead candidates: gallic, aconitic, and crocetin acids. Their effects on TNF gene expression were then assessed in vivo using a mouse leukocyte model. The in silico results indicated that crocetin had the highest TNF binding affinity (−5.6 to −4.6 …

Total Polyphenol Content, Antioxidant Potential, Antibacterial And Antifungal Properties Of Ferula L. Species Growing In Tajikistan, Saidbeg Satorov, Sulkhya Mavlonazarova, Salomuddin Yusufi, Vyacheslav Dushenkov
Publications and Research
The plants of the genus Ferula L. have long been recognized for their significant roles in traditional medicine in the Middle East and Asia, a heritage that we deeply respect and appreciate. A diverse array of biologically active compounds, particularly concentrated in the roots of various Ferula species, accounts for their broad range of medicinal properties and applications in folk medicine. Many species within this genus are noted for their high content of phenolic compounds, which exhibit potent antioxidant activity and demonstrate substantial antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

Efficacy Of Ferula L. Species Extracts From Tajikistan Against Influenza Viruses, Saidbeg Satorov, Sulhiy Mavlonazarova, Ahdrey P. Bogoyavlenskiy, Salomuddin D. Yusufi, Vyacheslav Dushenkov
Publications and Research
Efficacy of Ferula L. Species Extracts from Tajikistan Against Influenza Viruses One of the challenges facing both the domestic and international pharmaceutical industries is the limited selection and suboptimal efficacy of available antiviral drugs. The high mutational variability of influenza viruses contributes to rapid acquisition of drug resistance, which diminishes or nullifies the effectiveness of existing therapies, thereby necessitating the exploration for novel therapeutics. This study aimed to assess the antiviral activities of three species of the genus Ferula— indigenous to the Republic of Tajikistan—against influenza strains A/Vladivostok/2/09 (H1N1) and A/Almaty/8/98 (H3N2). The investigation revealed that phytochemical constituents—specifically, root …

Comparative Analysis Of Polyphenol Content, Antioxidant Activity And Antimicrobial Properties In Endemic And Widespread Allium Species Of Tajikistan, Fazila Mirzoeva, Saidbeg Satorov, Salomuddin Usufi, Vyacheslav Dushenkov, Shukhratdzhon Shukhratdzhon
Publications and Research
In Tajikistan, the Allium genus is notably prolific, with over 80 species documented, and new species continually being identified in the mountainous regions. The Gorno- Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) of Tajikistan, within the Pamir Mountains, is significant for its 31 distinct Allium species, including endemics like A. afghanicum Wendelbo and A. schugnanicum Vved. The distribution of these species is often geographically restricted, and their biological activities, especially their antimicrobial properties, remain largely unexplored, presenting significant opportunities for future phytochemical and pharmacological research. This scholarly inquiry is aimed at contributing substantially to the academic discourse on the therapeutic capacities of Allium …

Background: Mind-body treatments have the potential to manage pain, yet their effectiveness when delivered online for the treatment of low back pain (LBP) is unknown. We sought to evaluate whether a virtually delivered mind-body program integrating tai chi, qigong, and meditation (VDTQM) is effective for treating LBP.
Methods: This randomized controlled trial compared VDTQM (n=175) to waitlist control (n=175). Eligible participants were at least 18 years old, had LBP for at least 6 weeks, were not pregnant, had not previously taken tai chi classes, and had not undergone spine surgery within 6 months. The treatment group received a 12-week VDTQM …

Botanical therapeutics possess a unique potential in the treatment of viral diseases. The pharmacological base and clinical use of botanical therapeutics have been extensively reviewed. The mode of action(s) may be built either on the direct interference with the virus's ability to enter human cells, virus replication, or exerting immune-modulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. The adjuvant treatment with botanical therapeutics has the potential to result in advances in symptom resolution, decrease in disease burden and shortening its duration.

Hand Issues On Scleroderma Patients, Ana Font Hernandez
Hand Issues On Scleroderma Patients, Ana Font Hernandez
Publications and Research
Based on the design of a 3D-printed spoon prototype, we surveyed scleroderma patients about the device's value. 75% of patients mentioned having problems on their hands due to scleroderma. 85% of patients said their hand form changed because of the disease. Answers to the frequency or speed of the changes provide inconclusive results. The 3D printing technology has the potential to solve specific issues scleroderma patients face in their daily lives. Nevertheless, further research is needed to fully understand how hands shape change over time.

A Severe Case Of Neutropenia Secondary To Clopidogrel, Harrynauth Persaud, William B. Chung
Publications and Research
An 83-year-old male patient presented with complaints of generalized body aches, fever, rhinorrhea, and worsening dyspnea for the past 5 days. Four weeks ago, he was started on clopidogrel after he underwent stent placement to his left leg. Current admission laboratory findings revealed a white blood cell (WBC) count of 1180, with no neutrophils corresponding to an absolute neutrophil count of zero. After an extensive negative infectious workup, clopidogrel was determined to be the offending agent. This medication was discontinued and the patient was placed on a leukocyte growth factor with significant improvement in his WBC and neutrophil counts. On …

Botanical Therapeutics In The Modern World, Vyacheslav Dushenkov, Brittany L. Graf, Mary Ann Lila
Publications and Research
Plants are the source of a broad spectrum of biologically active phytochemicals. For effective defense against pathogens and abiotic stress, plants have developed complicated chemical strategies with different mechanisms of action. By harnessing these phytochemicals, humans have used plants for medicinal purposes for over 30,000 years, and they remain a valuable source for the development of modern therapeutics. Plant-derived materials are utilized as pharmaceuticals, botanical drugs, dietary supplements (nutraceuticals), functional food ingredients, and cosmeceuticals. The Global Institute for Bioexploration (GIBEX), an international conglomerate of researchers, is involved in multiple botanical therapeutics discovery and development programs.
