Neurenteric Cysts: A Neurosurgical Case Series And Treatment Perspectives, Defran Ercan, Walter Stummer, Maryam Khaleghi Ghadiri

BioMedicine

Neurenteric cysts (NC) are rare lesions of endodermal origin lined by mucin-secreting cuboidal or columnar epithelium of an intestinal or respiratory type. They occur more frequently spinally than cranially. From the radiological view, NC may be confused with other lesions of the central nervous system, like arachnoid or epidermoid cysts. However, due to advances in neuroimaging, there is an increasing trend in preoperative diagnosis of NC. We are reporting three cases of NC, each exhibiting markedly distinct symptoms and postoperative courses. The first patient, a 45year-old woman, had NC in the fourth ventricle. Although she underwent surgery, the lesion recurred …

A Staged-Olif Approach Can Minimize Construct Lengths In Adult Spinal Deformity- A Case Series And Literature Review, Guna Pratheep Kalanchiama, Alexander Shao-Rong Pang, Jacob Yoong-Leong Oh

BioMedicine

Background:

Adult Spinal Deformity (ASD) is one of the challenging conditions to treat for spine surgeons. One of the important dilemmas in the management of these patients is the decision on the number of levels of instrumentation and the overall length of the construct. OLIF has the advantage of providing a minimally invasive approach to address this complex pathology also allowing us to stage the procedure and thus help clinicians reassess if the patient requires an additional decompression, long fusion lengths, or need for osteotomies.

Aim:

Our study aims to evaluate the possibility of minimizing the construct length following a …

Cyclohexylamine, The Principal Metabolite Of Cyclamate, Contracts The Epididymal Vas Deferens Of Rats By Affecting Endogenous Catecholamine Release Via Postsynaptic Α1aand Presynaptic Α2-Adrenoceptors In A Calcium-Dependent Manner, Yuh-Fung Chen, Yu-Wen Wang, Huei-Yann Tsai May 2025

Cyclohexylamine, The Principal Metabolite Of Cyclamate, Contracts The Epididymal Vas Deferens Of Rats By Affecting Endogenous Catecholamine Release Via Postsynaptic Α1aand Presynaptic Α2-Adrenoceptors In A Calcium-Dependent Manner, Yuh-Fung Chen, Yu-Wen Wang, Huei-Yann Tsai

BioMedicine

Background: Cyclohexylamine (CHA) is a principal metabolite of cyclamate, which was once one of the most prominently consumed non-sugar sweeteners. Earlier studies suggested that long-term use of cyclamate might be carcinogenic and genotoxic; however, no consistent evidence supports an association between cyclamate and cancer risk. However, this issue remains interesting. Cyclamate can be metabolized to CHA by the intestinal bacteria in humans and some animals. Previous reports indicated CHA could induce atrophy of rat testes and affect rat fertility, as well as contract rat vas deferens. However, the contractile mechanisms of CHA on rat vas deferens remains poorly understood. This …

The Protective Role Of Astaxanthin Against Oxidative Stress And Inflammation In Peritoneal Dialysis Rats, Ratih Tri Kusuma Dewi, Bambang Purwanto, Brian Wasita, Vitri Widyaningsih

BioMedicine

Background: Prolonged exposure of peritoneal membrane to dialysate solution is known to cause fibrosis mediated by imbalanced inflammatory response and oxidative stress. In this context, proinflammatory cytokines including TGF-β and IL-1β, along with oxidative stress markers namely SOD and MDA, present in circulation, could serve as indicators of fibrosis. This phenomenon has the potential to interfere with the optimization of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) treatment. Other oral antioxidant supplements have been widely studied to prevent peritoneal damage, but investigations regarding Astaxanthin (AST) effect on fibrosis marked with proinflammatory cytokine are still limited.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate the protective …

Decompression With Intradural Dissection For The Chiari Malformation Type I: Toward Eliminating Wound Complications, Anna Lin, Lindsey Asti, Marissa Carroll, Jeffrey Campbell, Jospeh Piatt

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: There is continuing conversation about surgical technique in the management of the Chiari malformation. Popular options include osseous decompression alone, decompression with dural splitting, and decompression with intradural dissection (DID) and duraplasty. Wound complications after intradural dissection are a persistent problem. The current study of an institutional series examines wound complication rates after intradural dissection without dural closure.

METHODS: A retrospective single-institution chart review was performed for patients < 21 years with Chari malformation type I who underwent DID without dural closure and had at least 6 months of follow-up. Bone removal corresponded to the area of attachment of the rectus capitis posterior minor muscles together with laminectomy of the atlas. The trapezius and semispinalis capitis muscles were retracted but were not separated from the occiput.

RESULTS: A total of 76 patients were treated from May 2010 through May 2024. Thirty-eight (50.0%) patients had syringomyelia. The median age at surgery was 9 years (interquartile range [IQR] 4-13), …

Several decades of research have investigated the neural connections between stroke-induced brain damage and language difficulties. Typically, lesion-symptom mapping (LSM) studies that address this connection have relied on mass univariate statistics, which do not account for multidimensional relationships between variables. Machine learning (ML) techniques, which can capture these intricate connections, offer a promising complement to LSM methods. To test this promise, we benchmarked ML models on structural and functional MRI to predict aphasia severity (N = 238) and naming impairment (N = 191) for a cohort of chronic-stage stroke survivors. We used nested cross-validation to examine performance along …

The cranial base synchondroses, comprised of opposite-facing bidirectional chondrocyte layers, drive anteroposterior cranial base growth. In humans, RUNX2 haploinsufficiency causes cleidocranial dysplasia associated with deficient midfacial growth. However, how RUNX2 regulates chondrocytes in the cranial base synchondroses remains unknown. To address this, we inactivated Runx2 in postnatal synchondrosis chondrocytes using a tamoxifen-inducible Fgfr3-creER (Fgfr3-Runx2cKO) mouse model. Fgfr3-Runx2cKO mice displayed skeletal dwarfism and reduced anteroposterior cranial base growth associated with premature synchondrosis ossification due to impaired chondrocyte proliferation, accelerated hypertrophy, apoptosis, and osteoclast-mediated cartilage resorption. Lineage tracing reveals that Runx2-deficient Fgfr3+ cells failed to differentiate into osteoblasts. Notably, Runx2-deficient chondrocytes showed …

Concomitant Systemic Autoinflammatory Diseases: Diagnostic And Therapeutic Challenges, Eman Al Masroori, Mahadev J. Mal, Reem Abdwani

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Neonatal-onset multisystem inflammatory disease (NOMID) and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) are distinct entities within the expanding spectrum of systemic autoinflammatory diseases (SAIDs). We report a 3-month-old infant who presented with recurrent fever, urticarial rash, and polyarthritis. After excluding other causes, anakinra was initiated based on clinical suspicion of NOMID. Despite treatment optimisation, she continued to experience disease flares. An initial autoinflammatory panel and subsequent whole-exome sequencing revealed heterozygous MEFV (M694V and V726A) gene mutations, which did not explain the clinical picture. Further deep sequencing identified NLRP3 (p.Asp305Glu) somatic mosaicism, confirming NOMID. The coexistence of NOMID and FMF presented significant diagnostic …
