Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract(CAKUT) are the leading causes of childhood chronic kidney disease (CKD). The etiology of most of the cases is thought to be multifactorial. In this study, risk factors for CAKUT and the effect of mobile phone-related electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure during pregnancy were investigated.Materials and methods: Fifty-seven cases and 57 healthy controls under 2 years of age were included and their mothers were subjected to a questionnaire. Groups were compared for parents’ demographics, pregestational (chronic disease, body mass index, use of the folic acid supplements) and antenatal variables (gestational disease, weight gain during …

The study was carried out on Panthera species (4 lions and 5 tigers) housed in Bannerghatta Biological Park, Bengaluru, and Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru. Estrus behavior such as rolling, licking, nudging, chuffing, frequent urination, whitish discharge, vocalisation, lordosis and copulatory behavior such as vocalisation, allowed to be mounted, aggression towards male, mounting, and biting of the nape of female were exhibited both in lions and tigers which helped to identify the time of fecal sample collection. The study’s main aim was to carry out noninvasive and noncontact pregnancy detection in these wild felids. Feces samples collected from the female …

Cows were treated with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in a single dose and then subjected to ovum pick-up (OPU) for evaluation of oocyte recovery and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Cows underwent OPU followed by application of FSH (200 mg) on day 2 and new OPU on day 3. This methodology was repeated 3 times sequentially. In FSH-free the cows (control), OPU was performed at intervals of one week. The number of oocytes recovered was higher in the control cows (22.2 ± 1.5) compared to the treated cows (16.9 ± 1.4; P < 0.05). There was no difference between the control (13.2 ± 0.6) and the treated (11.2 ± 1.1) cows in the number of viable oocytes (P > 0.05). There was no difference between the control cows (47.1 …

Comparison Of Percutaneous Nephrostomy And Double J Stent In Symptomatic Pregnancy Hydronephrosis Treatment, Adnan Şi̇mşi̇r, Fuat Kizilay, Mehmet Bülent Semerci̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: We aimed to compare the success rate of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) and double J stenting (DJS) in the treatment of symptomatic pregnancy hydronephrosis. Materials and methods: Diagnosis and grading of hydronephrosis were performed by urinary ultrasound (USG) and Doppler mode was used for evaluation of renal arterial resistivity index (RI). Patients were divided into two groups according to the method used for the treatment of hydronephrosis: group A (PCN, n = 38) and group B (DJS, n = 46). A P value < 0.05 was considered signi cant. Results: The number of patients requiring second intervention was higher in group B (P = 0.0018) and time to secondary intervention was signi cantly earlier in group B also (P = 0.0025). e number of tertiary intervention was again higher in group B (5/16 vs. 1/6) and the need for tertiary intervention was higher in patients who underwent DJS implantation as a secondary intervention than those who underwent PCN (5/11 vs. 1/11, P = 0.0012). e time to tertiary intervention was longer in patients with PCN than in those with DJS (P = 0.0048). Conclusion: PCN may be preferred to DJS in symptomatic pregnancy hydronephrosis because it requires fewer re-interventions a er longer times.

Metabolic Indicators For Early Pregnancy In Zebu And Crossbreddairy Cows Reared In A Subtropical Climate, Muzamil Abdulah, Tushar Kumar Mohanty, Mukesh Bhakat, Arumugam Kumaresan, Tapas Kumar Patbandha, Ambadas Rakhamaji Madkar, Ashok Kumar Mohanty

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To identify metabolic indicators in blood and urine for early pregnancy in dairy cows (32 crossbred and 12 purebred zebu cows), blood and urine samples were collected on days 0, 15, 20, 24, and 30 postbreeding. The plasma progesterone (P4) concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows than in nonpregnant cows after day 15. The plasma blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration remained significantly (P < 0.05) higher in pregnant cows on day 15. The plasma concentrations of cholesterol, glucose, protein, and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) did not differ between pregnant and nonpregnant cows. The urine protein concentration was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in pregnant zebu cows compared to nonpregnant zebu cows. Plasma P4 was significantly (P < 0.001) and positively associated with urine glucose levels in nonpregnant crossbred cows. In nonpregnant zebu cows, the correlation between P4 was positive (P < 0.05) with plasma cholesterol, glucose, urine glucose, and protein. In pregnant zebu cows, P4 was negatively associated with plasma BUN and positively (P < 0.05) associated with both plasma and urine glucose levels. Thus, urinary proteins can be used as a noninvasive tool for early nonpregnancy confirmation in cows with very high accuracy at around 24 days after artificial insemination.

Relation Between Foot Pain And Plantar Pressure In Pregnancy, Tuncay Varol, Asli Göker, Eni̇s Cezayi̇rli̇, Serkan Özgür, Ayşe Tuç Yücel

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hormonal and structural changes that occur during pregnancy cause alterations in body biomechanics. These alterations reach their peak in the last trimester. Adaptive changes that appear in the foot result in pain in the foot and ankle. Pedobarography is a noninvasive measurement method that can be used to understand the origin of such pain. Materials and methods: One hundred and thirty-one pregnant women who did not have a foot or ankle problem prior to pregnancy volunteered to take part in the study. Pain was quantified by a visual analog scale (VAS). A cut-off value of 2.95 was taken to …

The ODI values of pregnant (P) and nonpregnant (NP) cows were compared using two-way ANOVA. The P cows tended to have greater endometrial …

We aimed to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D and GTT. Materials and methods: Fifty-three patients diagnosed with GTT at the 6th to 10th weeks of gestation were included in the study (GTT group). Thirty-five pregnant women with normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (fT3), and free thyroxine (fT4) levels served as a …

To explore the effects of maternal transient systemic hypotension on apoptotic neuronal death in an intrauterine fetal rat brain during the first 24 h after induction of hypotension. Materials and methods: A total of 40 pregnant Sprague–Dawley rats were subjected to either transient systemic hypotension produced for 30 min by blood withdrawal via femoral artery catheterization (hypotension group) or sham operation (control group) on day 15. Two randomly selected fetuses were taken from each rat at 0, 6, 12, and 24 h after the procedure. Apoptosis was evaluated in sections from the whole fetal brain by TUNEL and caspase-3 staining. …
