BACKGROUND: The phenotype of combined heavy alcohol consumption and obesity has the potential to pose as a considerable health burden in the U.S. No studies using nationally representative data in the U.S. have reported their secular joint prevalence trends. BACKGROUNDThere is considerable heterogeneity in the effect of weight loss on metabolic function in people with obesity.METHODSWe evaluated muscle and liver insulin sensitivity, body composition, and circulating factors associated with insulin action before and after approximately 20% weight loss in women identified as "Responders" (n = 11) or "Non-responders" (n = 11), defined as the top (>75% increase) and bottom (<5% increase) quartiles of the weight loss-induced increase in glucose disposal rate (GDR) during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp procedure, among 43 women with obesity (BMI: 44.1 ± 7.9 kg/m2).RESULTSAt baseline, GDR, which provides an index of muscle insulin sensitivity, and the hepatic insulin sensitivity index were more than 50% lower in Responders than Non-responders, but both increased much more after weight loss in Responders than Non-responders, which eliminated the differences between groups. Weight loss also caused greater decreases in intrahepatic triglyceride content and plasma adiponectin and PAI-1 concentrations in Responders than Non-responders and greater insulin-mediated suppression of plasma free fatty acids, branched-chain amino acids, and C3/C5 acylcarnitines in Non-responders than Responders, so that differences between groups at baseline were no longer present after weight loss. INTRODUCTION: Limited access to healthy food in areas that are predominantly food deserts or food swamps may be associated with obesity. Other unhealthy behaviors may also be associated with obesity and poor food environments.

METHODS: We calculated Modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI) to assess food retailers. Using data collected from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey, the NJ Department of Health (NJDOH), and the US Census Bureau, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the interaction of obesity with the food environment and assessed smoking, leisure-time physical activity (LPA), and poor sleep.

Background: Bariatric surgery is the most effective weight loss intervention. However, it can also decrease the bioavailability of oral medications. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors, the mainstay treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), are the most successful example of an oral targeted therapy. The impact of bariatric surgery on CML outcomes is unknown.

Methods: In a retrospective analysis, we screened 652 patients with CML and identified 22 with prior bariatric surgery, and compared their outcomes to a matched cohort of 44 patients with no prior bariatric surgery.

Results: The rate of early molecular response (3-month BCR::ABL1 < 10% International Scale) was lower in the bariatric surgery group compared with the control group (68% vs. 91%; p = .05), with longer median times to achieve complete cytogenetic (6 vs. 3 months; p = .001) or major molecular responses (12 vs. 6 months; p = .001). Bariatric surgery was associated with inferior event-free survival (5-year, 60% vs. 77%; p = .004) and failure-free survival (5-year, 32% vs. 63%; p < .0001). In a multivariate analysis, bariatric surgery was the only independent predictor for the risk of treatment failure (hazard ratio, 9.40; 95% CI, 2.71-32.55; p = .0004) or event-free survival (hazard ratio, 4.24; 95% CI, 1.67-12.23; p = .008).

Effortful control, or the regulation of thoughts and behaviour, is a potential target for preventing childhood obesity.

Objectives

To assess effortful control in infancy through late childhood as a predictor of repeated measures of body mass index (BMI) from infancy through adolescence, and to examine whether sex moderates the associations.

Methods

Maternal report of offspring effortful control and measurements of child BMI were obtained at 7 and 8 time points respectively from 191 gestational parent/child dyads from infancy through adolescence. General linear mixed models were used.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic created delays in surgical care. The population with obesity has a high risk of death from COVID-19. Prior literature shows the most effective way to combat obesity is by weight loss surgery. At different times throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, elective inpatient surgeries have been halted due to bed availability. Obesity medicine is not recognized as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). This review examines the value of specialization, status of current ABOM Diplomates, governing bodies involved in ABMS/AOA Board Certification, and the advantages and disadvantages of an ABMS/AOA recognized obesity medicine subspecialty.

The melanocortin pathway is well established to be critical for body-weight regulation in both rodents and humans. Despite extensive studies focusing on this pathway, the downstream brain sites that mediate its action are not clear. Here, we found that, among the known paraventricular hypothalamic (PVH) neuron groups, those expressing melanocortin receptors 4 (PVHMc4R) preferably project to the ventral part of the lateral septum (LSv), a brain region known to be involved in emotional behaviors. Obesity rates have increased across all segments of society since the late 1970s, but the reason behind population-level increases in body weight remains unclear. We used the 1971–2020 NHANES data to examine whether the observed trend in obesity prevalence is attributable to changing public health behaviors (i.e., intracohort change) or changing publics (i.e., cohort replacement). We partitioned total change in mean BMI, and rates of obesity and severe obesity, into its IC and CR components using linear and algebraic decomposition methods. Obesity is undertreated in the primary care setting as a single medical condition. Obese patients are higher risk for comorbid conditions including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and stroke. There is no universal screening tool implemented in the primary care setting for obesity management. An extensive literature review was completed to identify barriers in the primary care settings for providers to treat obesity as a disease state, assess current practices for weight management in these settings, and to identify health behaviors of adult patients with obesity.
