Prostate Apoptosis Response-4 (Par-4) is a conserved and ubiquitous tumor-suppressor factor which can selectively induce apoptosis in tumor cells, while leaving normal cells unaffected. While Par-4 is well established as a tumor-suppressor, there have yet been no formal investigations as to whether it has a physiologic role in normal tissues.

Early observations of Par-4 knockout mouse lines yielded that the adult mice displayed significant weight gain and fat accumulation compared to their wild-type counterparts while on a conventional chow diet. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Body Knowledge Questionnaire (BKQ), an instrument that measures weight management integration: an individual’s attitudes, preferences, and behaviors associated with weight self-management. The BKQ was revised following a pilot study demonstrating its validity and reliability, and new items were added based on data gathered through four focus groups of obese and normal-weight survey completers. Additional items were derived from the extant literature on weight management and integration. This research sought to identify the effects of prenatal and postnatal factors on systemic metabolism and the regulation of food intake, weight, and body composition. It was found that the manipulation of maternal diets influenced the systemic metabolism of offspring. The offspring of dams fed an isocaloric, low protein diet were significantly smaller and consumed less food than offspring from dams fed a control diet. Our aim was to estimate worldwide trends in mean body-mass index (BMI) and a comprehensive set of BMI categories that cover underweight to obesity in children and adolescents, and to compare trends with those of adults.
