A new vaccine to prevent human papillomavirus infection was approved in 2006 in the United States (U.S.). Uptake of the vaccine has been less than optimal (CDC, 2010c). New venues for promoting vaccine acceptance are needed (Middleman & Tung, 2010). The goal of this capstone clinical project is to create an evidence based toolkit for use by school nurses in educating female adolescents, parents, communities and other healthcare providers about the HPV vaccine.

Students often have misconceptions regarding the reality of nursing and the opportunities available to nurses that sometimes result in poor choices related to pursuing nursing as a career. To help prenursing students make better-informed career decisions and address misunderstandings, faculty developed the DVD and Web site Perspectives on Nursing, a collection of 15 nurse interviews. The authors describe and discuss the project, the value of recorded nurses' stories, analysis of student feedback, and recommendations.

Homelessness places people at risk of stressors that translate into stress and subsequently affect their health. Using Neuman Systems Model as a framework to identify modalities for nursing intervention among stressors and health problems of homeless people, this study compared stress levels among homeless people from three different homeless housing program types, investigated variables that predict the presence of stress among homeless, identified the degree of self-reported contact homeless people had with nurses, and measured to what extent nurses are preferred as health care providers by homeless people. Extremity injuries predominate, representing 50% to 70% of all injuries treated (Melcer, 2010). Anencephaly is a neural tube defect that severely limits the lifespan of affected infants. While these infants have no higher brain function, they are still persons, and should be given the same moral and ethical considerations as healthy infants. With this in mind, organ donation procedures should follow the same guidelines that apply to other donors. Because a large part of nursing care for anencephalic infants is palliative care, nurses need appropriate training to care effectively for both the infant and the family, providing for physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs.

Chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) remains one of the most serious and challenging symptoms oncology nurses encounter in caring for patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy. CIPN is under-addressed, under-reported, and symptoms are minimized by healthcare providers, which adversely affect patient quality of life, physical function, and emotional well-being. There is an absence of research examining nurses’ knowledge and practice behaviors related to CIPN. It is unbelievable how quickly time flies when you’re having fun. We have now been editing BRN for 8.5 years, and we are still speaking to one another! Over this time, numerous changes have occurred in our editorial procedures. We started our editing positions working in adjoining offices at the University of Florida, yelling back and forth to one another; we now work 2,200 miles from each other, communicating on a regular basis via e-mail. We started off using a homemade database combined with a complicated e-mail filing system; we now use ScholarOne’s Manuscript Central, a web-based system easily accessible …

To explore the extent of practices of formative assessment in health science education, a self-report questionnaire was administered to faculty members of nursing and allied health sciences of a south India university. Simple percentages were computed to explore the extent of practice of formative assessment and the ways in which it is currently used to help students learn in nursing and allied health science courses. The study revealed that there is room for improvement in the way formative assessment is practiced currently in health science education.

There has been a significant increase in the Hispanic population in the United States that is not mirrored by representation of Hispanic registered nurses in the United States . Hispanic new graduate nurses enter nursing practice with few Hispanic role models and their story is not found in nursing literature. A qualitative study with a phenomenological philosophy and methodology was conducted to investigate the lived experience of seven Mexican American new graduate nurses, a subgroup of Hispanic nurses. Readiness for hospital discharge is an under-investigated topic in pediatric solid organ transplant. The immediate post-operative period and first few weeks after transplant are a critical time period where patients are at high risk for transplant-related complications.

A correlation design framed by Meleis' Transitions Theory were used to determine; (1) the influences of discharge teaching and care coordination on parent readiness for hospital discharge among parents of children who have experienced solid organ transplantation; and (2) the relationship of parent readiness for hospital discharge with coping, adherence difficulty, utilization of healthcare resources, and family impact in the first three weeks …

The purpose of this research investigation was to determine the correlational values between testing scores when utilizing the Assessment Technologies Institute™, LLC (ATI) standardized content exams during the third and fourth semesters of an associate degree nursing (ADN) program, and the sub-scale scores in the same content areas of the comprehensive final exam, the ATI RN-Predictor, taken during the final weeks of nursing school. Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, a nursing care quality indicator, are becoming increasingly common in United States acute care facilities. In fiscal year 2007, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recorded 257,412 “avoidable” Stage III and Stage IV pressure ulcers acquired in our nation’s hospitals on patients who were admitted to receive care for their primary diagnosis (CMS, 2007). Pressure ulcers are associated with pain and suffering, loss of function, increased length of stay, increased morbidity and mortality, and significant financial burden (Ayello & Lyder, 2008). The purpose of the study was to explore how Thai end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients manage the challenges of living with hemodialysis. The participants were Thai ESRD patients, who were receiving hemodialysis in one of the central provinces in Thailand. A grounded theory approach was employed in this study as it focuses on social processes grounded in individual experiences of participants in the study. The participants included 30 ESRD patients, aged 26-75, who had been undergoing hemodialysis from 6 months to 12 years. Individual in-depth interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is sweeping the nation as a legitimate and exciting new resource for nursing educators. As with most new technologies, HFS is not without its difficulties. It can be a costly program to run and may also cause anxiety among the faculty required for implementation. There is a simple solution to help increase the ease of its implementation: using student workers. This article discusses how using students to help run the simulations can not only reduce overall cost and anxiety associated with this new technology but also increase learning among those participating in HFS.

The purpose of this study was to characterize a vulnerable population of postpartum women at risk for family violence and maladaptive outcomes and to determine the degree the identified attributes increase the risk of child neglect and psychological aggression. Lazarus' Appraisal Theory and Scaer's Traumatic Spectrum framework provided a conceptual basis to examine the interrelationships between intimate partner violence (IPV), depression, previous traumatic history, and child neglect.
