Development And Evaluation Of Trauma Informed Care Education For Licensed Nurses, Kristina O'Meara
Epsilon Sigma at-Large Research Conference
Trauma informed care nursing education is crucial. Trauma informed care is a method of providing health care which understands the likelihood of past and present traumatic events in patients and families. The experience of past or present trauma often led to chronic diseases, substance abuse disorder, fragmented health care, fears surrounding health care, chronic stress, and other negative health consequences. The purpose of this project is to increase licensed nurses’ awareness and ability to practice trauma informed care in clinical practice, as well as promote policy initiation within the health care facilities. Method planning integrated the Knowledge to Action Cycle. …

Graduate Research Showcase
Problem: According to the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), moral distress (MD) is a major issue in the healthcare profession (2015). Many healthcare workers (HCW) are not aware of MD. The inability to recognize MD may lead to departing the profession.
Purpose: To offer an educational workshop about MD 1) explore the frequency and level of MD (2) establish a decision tree to mitigate MD.
Background: MD occurs when a person understands what they should do but cannot, due to organizational policies. The pandemic has exacerbated MD.
Design: A mixed-method study: Measure of Moral Distress for -Healthcare Professionals (MMD-HP) …
Comparison Of Alexithymia And Burnout Amid Perceived Stress Levels Of Nursing Students, Kamela Harmon
Comparison Of Alexithymia And Burnout Amid Perceived Stress Levels Of Nursing Students, Kamela Harmon
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Graduate level nursing students are exposed to overload and exhaustion due to academic and professional demands, increasing exposure to stressors resulting in elevated levels of perceived stress, burnout, and alexithymia. This quantitative research, utilizing an online methodology at a midwestern university, explored the prevalence of perceived stress, compassion satisfaction (CS), compassion fatigue (CF), burnout, and alexithymia among master’s level nursing students. The descriptive analysis utilized the Pearson correlation coefficient (Pearson r) by use of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). The researcher discovered statistically significant negative correlations …
The Efficacy Of A Self-Care Training Program For Cedarville University Nursing Students, Leah Vance Sr., Kimberlyn Wideman Sr., Kylee Metzger Sr.
The Efficacy Of A Self-Care Training Program For Cedarville University Nursing Students, Leah Vance Sr., Kimberlyn Wideman Sr., Kylee Metzger Sr.
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
Problem: Cedarville university nursing students are likely to experience stressful work environments and traumatic events. Wentzel (2017) reports that nurses often encounter critical incidents. Exposure to critical incidents can affect the mental health of nurses and lead to secondary or vicarious trauma (Mayer, 2018). Students entering the nursing profession need to develop self-care practices to enhance productivity and maintain their emotional health as they provide care to patients (Boyle, 2011). The current study seeks to help Cedarville nursing students develop better self-care practices. Research Question: Does a self-care training program decrease the level of stress in Cedarville nursing students? Method:This …
Critical Analysis Of Breastfeeding Education Provided In The Hospital, Abigail Sweet
Critical Analysis Of Breastfeeding Education Provided In The Hospital, Abigail Sweet
Senior Honors Projects
The World Health Organization (W.H.O) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life. A large majority of new mothers are making the decision to breastfeed their newborn child. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2016, high breastfeeding initiation rates show that most mothers in the U.S. want to breastfeed and are trying to do so. However, there are several indicators that suggest that mothers may not be getting the support they need and the early postpartum period is a critical time for establishing support for breastfeeding. Depending on the type of …

Formulating a Best Practice Statement for Prison Parenting Programs Purpose: The purpose of this undergraduate honors project was to critically analyze available research on parenting, parenting education, incarcerated parents, and outcomes for the children of incarcerated parents, and make recommendations to a correctional facility for best practices. Background: Over 1.7 million American children have one or more incarcerated parents. These children are at high risk of depression, aggression, and intergenerational incarceration. Many incarcerated men have a limited understanding of parenting and fatherhood. While countless correctional facilities nationally have educational parenting programs, these programs are mainly unstandardized, and their efficacy is …
Nursing Student's Clinical Reasoning During Simulation, Rebecca S. Jensen
Nursing Student's Clinical Reasoning During Simulation, Rebecca S. Jensen
Rebecca S Jensen
Statement of problem While debriefing is considered essential for student understanding of the concepts embedded in a simulation, the measurement of clinical reasoning before and after debriefing has been minimally published. Students typically rate their performance as better than ratings by faculty, and the largest disparity is between self and faculty ratings for poorer performing students (Davis et al., 2006). Debriefing may be a method of attenuating students’ self-assessment by explicating their actions and reasoning during the simulation (Dreifuerst, 2012).
Hypotheses
- There will be no difference in student self-ratings and lab personnel ratings of student performance during simulation using the …

Using The Glasgow Coma Scale In Non-Neurological Clinical Areas, Tracey Thornley, Lauren Rullis
Using The Glasgow Coma Scale In Non-Neurological Clinical Areas, Tracey Thornley, Lauren Rullis
Nursing Conference Papers
The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was designed for use in a wide range of clinical environments with staff that had no special training (Teasdale and Jennett 1974). Evidence (Waterhouse 2007 and 2008) suggests however that there are ongoing problems with the use of the GCS assessment, and the impact that this might have on patient outcome is unknown. Variations in practice have been found in all areas, including the neurological specialties wards, however the skill level of nursing staff in non neurological areas is concerning with inconsistency in practice.
The purpose of this project was to explore the use of …

Autism spectrum disorders are greatly misunderstood in today’s society. In the United States, it is estimated that 1 in 110 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Despite this high prevalence, a great deal of the population is under the impression that a diagnosis of autism is straight forward and indicative of one set of devastating signs and symptoms. However, the severity of this disorder can range from mild to severe. According to the National Institute of Health, an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized …
