Differences in compensation between men and women exist, despite having similar experiences. Here, we present data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) from 2022 of self-reported compensation rates of academic dermatologists. Women dermatologists comprised 36.95% (75/203) of full professors, 61.54% (152/247) of associate professors, and 63.47% (311/490) of assistant professors; among these, 52.17% (12/23) were service chiefs and 35.48 % (22/62) were department chairs. The data shows that, except for department chairs, women are reporting being paid less relative to men at all academic ranks. Alzheimer disease begins in the brain many years before symptoms, but early changes are usually studied after death or indirectly through fluid and imaging biomarkers. Here we show that small brain biopsies collected during ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery can be used to study Alzheimer disease pathology and protein turnover during life. We analysed biopsies from 18 individuals with suspected normal pressure hydrocephalus, alongside matched ventricular and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid and post-mortem control brain tissue. Amyloid plaques were present in 9 of 18 biopsies, while mature tau tangles were rare. Hypoparathyroidism is an endocrine disease caused by insufficient levels of PTH, which acts directly on bone and kidney and indirectly on the intestine to regulate calcium and phosphate balance. In clinical trials, palopegteriparatide (TransCon PTH) treatment enabled independence from conventional therapy (no active vitamin D, ≤600 mg/d calcium) and maintained serum biochemistries within normal ranges. People with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have an earlier occurrence of aging complications, including cognitive impairment (CI). Chronic immune activation from cytomegalovirus (CMV) may contribute to increased inflammation and CI. We explored this association using several measures of CMV immune response among people with HIV (PWH). In a case-control design, we compared CMV immunoglobulin G (IgG), enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISpot), and flow cytometry between cases (subsequent CI) and controls (no CI). Baseline CMV IgG, CMV ELISpot, or flow measures were not associated with subsequent CI. INTRODUCTION: Cultural sensitivity and relevance are critical components for best practice in occupational therapy assessment. The Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI) is a performance-based assessment designed to evaluate sensory perception, sensory reactivity, postural control, ocular control, bilateral integration, and praxis abilities in children aged 3-12 years. Before the development of this tool, no standardized performance-based assessment of sensory integration functions had included a normative Turkish sample. Nuclear Envelope Membrane Protein 1 (NEMP1) is highly expressed in oocytes and required for fertility, yet its meiotic function remains poorly understood. Here, we identify NEMP1 as a critical organizer of meiotic telomere-nuclear envelope coupling and chromosome dynamics. Loss of NEMP1 causes telomere aggregation, loss of shelterin protection, telomere shortening, persistent DNA damage, aberrant non-homologous end joining, and chromosome end-to-end fusion, ultimately leading to aneuploidy in mouse oocyte. NEMP1 is required during early fetal meiotic prophase I for telomere-nuclear envelope attachment, bouquet formation, homolog pairing, and synapsis. OBJECTIVES: To qualitatively explore the lived experiences of individuals with post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) in Rwanda, with the aim of informing context-appropriate interventions to improve patients' quality of life.

DESIGN: Qualitative, phenomenological study using in-depth interviews and thematic analysis.

SETTING: All provinces of Rwanda, including the City of Kigali.

PARTICIPANTS: Adults who tested positive for PASC during a nationwide prevalence study were purposively sampled across all study sites. A total of 30 people were interviewed before saturation was reached.

BACKGROUND: Oral hygiene is a key component of health. Practices for oral hygiene include brushing teeth with toothpaste, flossing, and mouth washing. It has been reported that 36% of United States adults use mouthwash daily. However, antibacterial mouthwashes kill oral nitrate-reducing bacteria, thus impairing nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide is a key molecule in vasodilation and blood pressure regulation, often acting as a mediator, so there is a potential for antibacterial mouthwashes to cause elevated blood pressure. Sickle cell disease (SCD) causes brain injury and cognitive disability. Systemic inflammation and endothelial injury are central to SCD pathophysiology, yet the relationship between systemic drivers of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and brain injury remains understudied. This cross-sectional study assessed whole-brain and regional BBB permeability (Ktrans) using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging for 37 adults with SCD in steady state and 37 adults without SCD. BACKGROUND: Despite growing attention to workforce diversity in orthopaedic surgery, limited data exist describing the demographic composition of academic sports medicine faculty. This study examines the diversity of sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgery faculty across US orthopaedic surgery residency training programs.

METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of all ACGME-accredited orthopaedic surgery sports medicine faculty was conducted. Faculty data included sex, race, level of professorship, residency attended, year of residency graduation, and h-index. This multicenter, single-arm, phase 1/2 study evaluated the safety and efficacy of CD19-directed allogeneic chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) immunotherapy CTX110 in adult patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). We aimed to characterize contemporary diagnostic strategies, management approaches, and long-term outcomes, including progression to luminal Crohn's disease.

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort study across 25 centers within the ECCO-CONFER network. BACKGROUND: Slower chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression allows more time for transplant preparation. Whether differences in CKD progression by race/ethnicity associate with preemptive or living donor transplantation in youth has not been well studied.

METHODS: We examined the association between time spent with low eGFR (between 10-30 mL/min/1.73 m²) and odds of preemptive or living donor transplantation among youth with CKD. eGFR was estimated using the bedside Schwartz (if < 18 years) and CKD-EPI 2021 equations (if ≥ 18 years) and the CKiD U25 equation in sensitivity analysis. Time spent with low eGFR was compared by race/ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Cancer immunology research has traditionally focused on tumor-infiltrating leukocytes, but the role of the peripheral leukocytes remains understudied. Since tumor-infiltrating leukocytes are recruited from the blood, circulating immune profiles may provide prognostic insights obtainable before surgery, reflecting overall immune competence.

METHODS: We analyzed treatment-naïve blood samples from 134 stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC) patients using a nested case-control design (33 recurrences, 45 deaths; median follow-up: 7.4 years). Circulating leukocyte subsets were estimated using methylation cytometry applied to genome-wide methylation profiles. Cox regression models estimated associations between leukocyte metrics and disease-free and overall survival, adjusting for clinical factors.

Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2 (KMT2) family proteins methylate lysine 4 on the histone H3 tail at important regulatory regions in the genome and thereby impart crucial functions through modulating chromatin structures and DNA accessibility. We aimed to identify the molecular profile of KMT2-MT oesophageal cancer (EC) and associations with patient outcomes. In our study, KMT2 mutations were significantly associated with longer immunotherapy-related overall survival (OS) in the esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) (21.42 vs 13.42 months, HR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.50-0.88, P = 0.004), but not in the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). IMPORTANCE: Depression and anxiety are common among older adults undergoing surgery and are associated with adverse postoperative outcomes. However, effective tailored perioperative mental health interventions are lacking.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a perioperative intervention to optimize mental health.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A single-blind, hybrid, type 1, effectiveness-implementation randomized clinical trial was conducted (November 1, 2022, to March 31, 2025), with 3-month postoperative follow-up, at a US academic and community practice hospital network. Previously derived polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) perform inconsistently across diverse ancestries. We developed an APOE-independent multiancestry AD PRS using genome-wide association study summary statistics applied to European ancestry, African American, Caribbean Hispanic and East Asian cohorts. PRS performance was evaluated in a large independent multiancestry dataset and validated in several additional multiancestry cohorts. The PRS was significantly associated with AD in European ancestry, African American, Caribbean Hispanic and Native American Hispanic groups with adjusted odds ratios between 1.14 and 1.52 per PRS standard deviation. IMPORTANCE: DNL343 is a brain-penetrant small molecule that acts as an activator of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2B (eIF2b), designed to inhibit the integrated stress response. A prior phase 1B trial of DNL343 in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) provided evidence of a favorable safety profile, central nervous system penetrance, and target engagement based on integrated stress response biomarkers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly incorporated into hepatology research, yet few have been rigorously evaluated, particularly among patients with decompensated cirrhosis. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Hepatobiliary (FACT-Hep) captures multidimensional liver disease-specific burden, while the disease-agnostic PROMIS-29 assesses physical and mental health broadly. We evaluated the performance of FACT-Hep and its relationship to PROMIS-29 among participants with cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) enrolled in a prospective multicenter clinical trial.

Skin carotenoid score (SCS) as measured using pressure-mediated reflection spectroscopy has been validated among adults with normal and overweight body mass index, with little validation research among adults with obesity.
