Low levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been linked to a number of mental illnesses such as memory loss, depression and schizophrenia. While supplementation of DHA is beneficial in improving memory and cognition, the influence of dietary fats on the neurotransmitters and receptors involved in cognitive function is still not known. Chronic inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Recently, teasaponin, an extract from tea, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. We examined the effect of teasaponin on obesity, inflammation, glucose metabolism and central leptin sensitivity, in obese mice fed a high-fat (HF) diet for 16 weeks. Intraperitoneal injections of teasaponin (10mg/kg, daily) for 21 days significantly decreased the food intake and body weight of HF diet-induced obese mice. Teasaponin treatment also reduced the protein levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and/or IL-1β) and NF-κB signaling (p-IKK and p-IκBα) in adipose tissue and the liver. …

High-fat (HF) diet and obesity are risk factors for a number of mental health problems including depression, cognitive dysfunction, dementia, and neurodegenerative diseases. Histamine H1 receptors (H1Rs) are involved in many of these conditions. This study examined H1R receptor binding density in the brain of male rats fed a high-saturated fat (HF) diet, as well as the effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) and resistant starch (RS) supplementation of HF diet. In diploid animals, males and females share most of the genome (except sex-specific elements, such as sex chromosome genes), yet despite sharing the underlying genes that hard-wire traits, males and females may differ in their phenotypes when traits are controlled by proximate mechanisms, such as hormones. In color polymorphic species where coloration is only expressed in one sex, the design of studies of the inheritance of color and coevolved morph-specific traits (e.g. territorial vs sneaker strategies, skewed energetic investment in territorial defense vs sperm production, etc.) is compromised as the expression of morph-coding genes is only visualized in one sex. …

The Drosophila melanogaster laboratory model has been used extensively in studies of sexual conflict because during the process of courtship and mating, males impose several costs upon females (e.g., reduced fecundity). One important difference between the laboratory and the wild is that females in the laboratory lack a spatial refuge from persistent male courtship. Here, we describe two experiments that examine the potential consequences of a spatial refuge for females. In the first experiment, we examined the influence of a spatial refuge on mating rate of females, and in the second one we examined its influence on females' lifetime fecundity. …
