Background: Latinx students in the United States can face stressors and structural inequities that can lead to poor academic and mental health outcomes. They comprise 76% of the English Language Learner (ELL) population, yet little is known about the relationship between ELL status and traumatic stress and resilience outcomes among these Latinx students. We sought to see if resilience differs between ELL vs. non-ELL Latinx students, and if traumatic stress risk modifies the association between ELL designation and resilience among Latinx students to inform culturally relevant school resilience interventions and school-wide approaches for this population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare documentation completeness of HIV-related data by age group (children, adolescents and adults) in Haiti's Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional evaluation.

SETTING: EMR data for 36 965 enrolment visits, and 123 608 return visits from 58 facilities in Haiti (from 2016 to 2022).

PARTICIPANTS: Children, adolescents and adults accessing HIV care and treatment services in Haiti.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a myeloid neoplastic disorder driven by mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation in hematopoietic cells. Historically, LCH has been staged according to involvement of "risk organs" (bone marrow, liver, and spleen), based on risk of death. With improvements in supportive care and efficacy of MAPK pathway inhibitors, patients with LCH now rarely die. Emerging evidence suggests genetic ancestry may influence childhood cancer outcomes, but its impact on pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is unknown. We explored genetic ancestry's impact on survival among children with RMS. This multi-center observational cohort study is a secondary analysis of previously collected biobanking, genomic, and clinical data. The study included 920 individuals with newly diagnosed RMS under 40 years of age enrolled from 2005 to 2017 under the COG soft tissue sarcoma biobanking protocol D9902. Background and hypothesis: Sensory gating deficit is considered a pathophysiological feature of schizophrenia, which has been linked to N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction as one of the potential underlying mechanisms. Here, we hypothesize that higher levels of NMDAR antibody (Ab) may contribute to the sensory gating deficits in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Floreciendo is a sexual and reproductive health program for Latina teens (14-18 years) and their female caregivers adapted from the evidence-based IMARA intervention. We report on our experience theater testing Floreciendo during the preparation phase of the multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) framework. Floreciendo includes four two-hour sessions (i.e., intervention components). Our aims were to: (1) examine the preliminary acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of the intervention components, including the acceptability of the implementation plan (i.e., logistics, strategies), and (2) systematically report on curriculum modifications made based on findings.

BACKGROUND: The large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 resulted in a humanitarian crisis with hundreds of thousands of children exposed to traumatic events. To date, trauma-focused evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for children and youth have not been systematically evaluated and implemented in Ukraine. This study investigated the degree to which asymmetries in hemispheric language laterality are concordant with asymmetries in gray matter (GM) structure and whether the hemispheric organization of memory is influenced by functional language asymmetries. Background: When people living with HIV develop pulmonary tuberculosis, it often manifests without detectable acid-fast bacilli on sputum microscopy. We aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of stool Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (hereafter, Ultra) for Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection among adults with HIV.

Objectives: To assess the parasitological prevalence, seroprevalence and sociodemographic factors of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in patients living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) in an endemic area.

Objective: Despite β-cell failure in youth with dysglycemia (i.e., impaired glucose tolerance [IGT] and type 2 diabetes), fasting insulin (FI) concentrations are elevated. Herein, we examined the following: 1) metabolic clearance rate of insulin (MCRI) in youth with obesity and normal glucose tolerance (NGT) versus those with IGT versus those with type 2 diabetes; 2) racial and ethnic differences in insulin dynamics; and 3) metabolic/adiposity correlates of MCRI.

Background: Healthy dietary patterns are recommended to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet the relationships among healthy dietary patterns, blood metabolite profile, and incident CVD are not well understood.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the associations of healthy dietary patterns and related serum metabolite profiles with incident CVD in United States Hispanic/Latino adults.

OBJECTIVE: To establish thyroid ultrasound volume norms appropriate for studies of diffuse goiter in a cohort of children and adolescents from an iodine-deficient population exposed to 131I by the Chernobyl fallout.

METHODS: A cohort of 11,970 Belarusians aged ≤18 years at the time of the 1986 Chernobyl accident with individual thyroid radiation dose estimates was screened 10-18 years later. From these, a low-dose subset of 2,392 with no thyroid diseases was selected to construct age- and sex-specific normative values for thyroid ultrasound volume, compared to Belarusian Ministry of Health (MOH) norms and existing WHO and European standards.

High-dose methotrexate dosage and infusion durations differ across treatment protocols for pediatric leukemia, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma. Supportive care interventions are dependent on a patient's elimination of methotrexate (MTX). Therefore, it is important to establish the expected MTX elimination across protocols. Using modeling and simulation of real-world data, we determined the expected MTX concentrations at common time points from the start of infusion (24, 36, 42, 48, 60, and 72 hours) and the time that each patient would reach a typical discharge threshold (0.4, 0.2, 0.15, and 0.10 µM). These data provide a reference for MTX concentrations for common pediatric protocols.

An increasing number of studies suggest that a significant proportion of children with cancer harbor an underlying predisposition to malignancy, and it is likely that this proportion will only increase. Targeted surveillance for these individuals would likely improve outcomes. Historically, however, for most predisposition syndromes, there were no standardized surveillance protocols for early detection of cancer in predisposed individuals. Patients with interrupted inferior vena cava (I-IVC) and azygos continuation who undergo Fontan completion via hepatoazygos shunting exhibit unique hemodynamic challenges. This study evaluates age-related shifts in systemic venous return dominance, hepatic flow distribution (HFD), power loss (PL), and flow disturbances using patient-specific computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Data analysis from 95 patients with I-IVC showed a nonlinear shift in upper-to-lower body systemic flow dominance with ratios of 2, 1, and 0.5 (correlating to ages ∼3, ∼10, and ∼20, respectively). Objective: Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH) is a malformation of cortical development with high rates of epilepsy. The extent to which nodules participate in normal cerebral functions in addition to pathological processes is unclear. The authors assessed the functional utility (i.e., cognitive impacts) of surgically ablated epileptogenic PVNH tissue via comprehensive neuropsychological testing.

Methods: The sample included 32 patients with PVNH who underwent presurgical neuropsychological evaluation and a subsample of 16 patients who underwent MR-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) of nodules, with postsurgical neuropsychological testing. Several chemotherapeutic agents act by increasing DNA damage in cancer cells, triggering cell death. However, there is limited understanding of the extent and long-term consequences of collateral DNA damage in normal tissues. To investigate the impact of chemotherapy on mutation burdens and the cell population structure of normal tissue, we sequenced blood cell genomes from 23 individuals aged 3-80 years who were treated with a range of chemotherapy regimens. Substantial additional somatic mutation loads with characteristic mutational signatures were imposed by some chemotherapeutic agents, but the effects were dependent on the drug and blood cell types. Those who bully, are bullied, or witness bullying may experience negative emotional and physical consequences.1 To address the gap in accessible youth bullying interventions, Children's Mercy Kansas City partnered with Sporting Kansas City to develop Red Card KC, a bullying awareness program focusing on the impact of bystanders in bullying situations. The program is delivered to school and community partners through interactive assemblies educating youth on recognizing bullying, managing bullying situations, and standing up against bullying. Monosomy 7 and 7q deletions (-7/del(7q)) are the most common adverse cytogenetic event in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), linked to high relapse rates. We analyzed 115 AML patients with -7/del(7q) who achieved remission after induction therapy to characterize the mutational landscape from diagnosis to relapse. Median overall survival (OS) was 10.4 months, with improved survival in patients without TP53 mutation (13.04 vs. 8.6 months) or complex karyotype (12.4 vs. 8.6 months). TP53 mutations were most frequent (67% of cases at diagnosis) and persisted in 97% of patients at relapse. At time of relapse, patients with TP53 mutations had fewer co-occurring …

Background: Advances in care have led to improvements in survival for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with cancer; however, the risk of early death remains high for certain cancers, particularly acute leukemias. Risk factors for early death in AYAs diagnosed with acute leukemia have not been well studied.

Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry was used to assess risk of early death (within 2 months of diagnosis) in AYAs diagnosed with acute leukemia (n = 16 153). Desmoid tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by a clonal proliferation of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. Using the novel contrast-enhanced susceptibility-weighted imaging (CE-SWI) for characterizing desmoid tumors can enhance the separation between fibrous T2-hypointense and cellular T1-enhancing components. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the CE-SWI signal, volumetric, and radiomics-derived features in assessing desmoid treatment response. This IRB-approved study included 17 single-lesion extremity desmoid fibromatosis patients who underwent standard-of-care MRI, including CE-SWI, from March 2021 to February 2024.
