Ai Scribe Use In Residency Training: A Call For Specialty Society Guidance In Graduate Medical Education, Julia A. Giordano, Elizabeth Jones

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used for documentation purposes in clinical practice, yet guidance for resident use is limited. Given the substantial documentation burden on medical trainees, AI-powered scribing tools may offer benefits, but their integration into residency training raises educational, supervisory, and patient safety considerations. This study aimed to assess the availability of resident-specific guidance on AI scribe use from major medical and specialty organizations and to summarize current evidence on AI scribes in residency. We reviewed five major medical and specialty society websites (AAD, AMA, ACGME, AAMC, ABMS) via website searches and direct emails and conducted a PubMed …

Sleep disturbances are prominent across neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and may reflect specific abnormalities in brain development and function. Overnight polysomnography (PSG) allows for detailed investigation of sleep architecture, offering a unique window into neurocircuit function. Analysis of existing pediatric PSGs from clinical studies could enhance the availability of sleep studies in pediatric patients with NDDs towards a better understanding of mechanisms underlying abnormal development in NDDs. Here, we introduce and characterize a retrospective collection of 1527 clinical pediatric overnight PSGs across five different sites. We first developed an automated stager trained on independent pediatric sleep data, which yielded better performance …

Hyperdensity On Head Ct—An Imaging Review, Ramsis Benjamin, Christian Menard, Erik Larson

School of Medicine Publications

The 3D images derived from non-contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) scans provide a glimpse into the intra- and extracranial structures, based on the ability of electromagnetic X-rays to penetrate through various tissue densities. The gray matter, for example, possesses a higher density than the white matter, absorbs more X-rays, allows less penetration (attenuation), and thus has larger Hounsfield units (HU), the mathematical value of attenuation coefficient. The CT scanner’s wide availability and ease of use allow for quick assessment of acute neurosurgical abnormalities, such as hemorrhages, mass effect, hydrocephalus, and traumatic injuries. An attenuation value of +60 to +90 HU generally …

Immune-Mediated Necrotizing Myopathy In Association With Statin Exposure, Charlie E. Babcock, Phebie Rossi, Jennifer Hasvold Feb 2026

Immune-Mediated Necrotizing Myopathy In Association With Statin Exposure, Charlie E. Babcock, Phebie Rossi, Jennifer Hasvold

Aesculapius Journal (Health Sciences & Medicine)

Statins are first-line therapy for hyperlipidemia and are widely prescribed in primary care. Although generally safe, they carry rare but serious risks that must be considered on an individual basis. One such complication is immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM), an autoimmune condition characterized by persistent muscle weakness and elevated creatine kinase (CK) despite discontinuation of the statin. We describe an 87-year-old man with a history of atorvastatin intolerance who was reinitiated on the medication five years later. Shortly thereafter, he developed progressive weakness, recurrent hospitalizations, and ultimately was diagnosed with IMNM confirmed by biopsy and HMG-CoA reductase antibodies. Despite treatment with …

Utility Of The Wasi–Ii 2-Subtest Full Scale Iq For Identifying Impaired Cognitive Functions, Joseph J. Ryan, David S. Kreiner, Samuel T. Gontkovsky Feb 2026

Utility Of The Wasi–Ii 2-Subtest Full Scale Iq For Identifying Impaired Cognitive Functions, Joseph J. Ryan, David S. Kreiner, Samuel T. Gontkovsky

Archives of Assessment Psychology

This study focused on how accurately the WASI–II 2FSIQ predicts the 4FSIQ. If two subtests can identify intellectual disability, a low score might prompt a switch to the WAIS–IV or WISC–V prior to completing the four WASI–II subtests. Participants were 94 individuals with psychiatric or neurological disorders (age M = 49.04 yrs, education M = 13.48 yrs) seem for clinical evaluation. The correlation between the 2FSIQs and 4FSIQs in the total sample was high, r(92) = .96, p < .001, but the former cannot be relied upon to predict 4FSIQs. It overestimated 4FSIQs in 69.1% of the cases, with only 50% of the 2FSIQs falling within + 3 points of the 4FSIQs. However, classification accuracy statistics indicated that the 2FSIQ effectively screened for the presence of intellectual disability. A 2FSIQ standard score cutoff of ≤ 79 yielded a high probability that the 4FSIQ was also at or below the cut score.

Potential Mediators In The Relationship Between Racial Identity And Neuropsychological Performance In A Retired Nfl Cohort, Claire Stafford, Charles Golden, Ryan Bennett

Archives of Assessment Psychology

Historically, Black Americans have consistently performed more poorly than White Americans on various neuropsychological tests, with debates surrounding the causes of these differences ranging from genetic to societal factors. These differences have been documented across various cognitive domains, including memory, attention, executive function, and processing speed. Findings from previous research suggest that individuals with higher levels of education and stable marital relationships tend to exhibit better cognitive functioning, while certain football positions are linked to differences in cognitive abilities. However, the specific effects of these factors on neuropsychological performance require further investigation. The present archival study was derived from a …

HDAC inhibition shows promise in cancer treatment but pan-HDAC inhibitors cause gastrointestinal issues in 48% of patients. Understanding HDAC activation mechanisms is crucial to treating diverse diseases beyond cancer. Our study reveals that inositol polyphosphate multikinase (IPMK) and inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6 or phytic acid), enriched in vegan diets, play essential roles in activating the HDAC3 epigenetic axis and maintaining intestinal barrier integrity. IPMK binds to HDAC3 and drives InsP6 synthesis, which selectively activates HDAC3 at a 10 nM concentration by recruiting the DAD domain of its corepressor protein. IPMK deletion diminishes HDAC3 activation, leading to histone hyperacetylation and MMP gene …

Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Inhibition Improves Fetal Growth In A Rat Model Of Preeclampsia, Laura E. Coats, Nathan Campbell, Dylan Solise, Gabrielle M. Chamoun, Adam Z. Rawls, Alexandra Demesa, Ty Turner, Baoying Zheng, Barbara T. Alexander, Babbette Lamarca

Physiology & Biophysics

Introduction

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is elevated 2-fold in women with preeclampsia. Preclinical investigation shows TNF-α blockade reduces maternal blood pressure in reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) rats and attenuates the reduction in fetal weight. However, the benefits versus harms of this therapy on fetal growth and underlying pathogenesis are unknown. Thus, this study tested the hypothesis that maternal treatment with the soluble TNF-α inhibitor Etanercept (Etan) during late gestation improves placental perfusion, nutrient transport, and morphology, thereby improving fetal growth in the RUPP model of preeclampsia compared with Sham controls. We further …

The Racial Politics Of Early Dentistry And The Terrible “Toothache Blues”, Bronwen Mcveigh Phd Feb 2026

The Racial Politics Of Early Dentistry And The Terrible “Toothache Blues”, Bronwen Mcveigh Phd

Journal of the American College of Dentists

In interwar America, the relatively young profession of dentistry was developing rapidly. As the government, health institutions, and social organizers focused more intently on notions of national wellness, questions about how to achieve a healthy smile—and what a healthy smile should look like—proliferated. Groups like the National Dental Association worked to establish rigorous standards of technique, define ethical behavior, and encourage dentists to develop business acumen, yet the surprising proliferation of blues songs about dubious dentists tricking unassuming clients, or about fraught love affairs allegorized by disastrous dental exams, highlights the equivocal nature of many developments in early dentistry.

Staff Education To Address Financial Barriers In Outpatient Psychiatric Care, Yvette Taffou Kamayou Feb 2026

Staff Education To Address Financial Barriers In Outpatient Psychiatric Care, Yvette Taffou Kamayou

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This staff education project addressed financial barriers that prevent psychiatric outpatients from accessing consistent care. High no-show rates in outpatient psychiatry, often 20–40%, stem largely from costs such as co-pays, transportation, and medication, leading to missed appointments, poorer outcomes, and increased healthcare costs. The practice-focused question was “In an outpatient psychiatric clinic, does a targeted staff education program on non-judgmental financial discussions, sliding-scale fees, and telehealth options improve staff knowledge, confidence, and patient referral rates to resources over 8 weeks?” The purpose was to implement and evaluate a structured educational intervention to equip staff with tools for addressing financial barriers, …

Cationic Poly(Glucosamine)-Based Polymers Bind To Glycans With Varying Affinity Facilitating Transport Across The Glycocalyx Of Endothelial Cells, Claire Bridges, Lu Fu, Dan Wang, James D. Sterling, Susanna Liang, Shenda M. Baker, Jonathan Yeow, Megan S. Lord

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Natural polysaccharides, such as chitosan, offer promising avenues for drug delivery due to their cytocompatibility and ability to interact with cell surfaces. However, the endothelial glycocalyx, a glycan-rich extracellular matrix, presents a barrier that must be navigated for effective intracellular delivery. This study investigates how cationic poly(glucosamine)-based polymers, functionalized with guanidinium or ammonium groups, interact with key glycocalyx components including hyaluronan (HA) and heparan sulfate (HS). We demonstrate that these cationic polymers form tunable biomolecular condensates with glycans, with stronger binding observed for sulfated glycans, HS and heparin, than unsulfated HA. Derivatized chitosan polymers with varied cationic side chains exhibit …

The Vipeholm Experiments: A Case Study Of Unethical Dental Research, Lainie Ross Md, Phd Feb 2026

The Vipeholm Experiments: A Case Study Of Unethical Dental Research, Lainie Ross Md, Phd

Journal of the American College of Dentists

Modern-day research ethics training often begins with a discussion of the medical research atrocities committed by Nazi health care professionals and the resulting 10-principle Nuremberg Code, which is often considered to be the beginning of modern-day medical research regulations. It is occasionally mentioned that Nazi dentists also conducted unethical research in the concentration camps, and a few were brought to trial. In this manuscript, I compare two studies (one medical and one dental) conducted after World War II that violated the Nuremberg Code.

I describe and compare the well-known Willowbrook Hepatitis studies conducted by infectious disease doctors on vulnerable institutionalized …

Information Distortion As A Source Of Overconfidence In Managerial Decisions, Peter Boyle, Pete Nye Feb 2026

Information Distortion As A Source Of Overconfidence In Managerial Decisions, Peter Boyle, Pete Nye

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Managers confronting important strategic decisions often receive diagnostic information sequentially over time. As new information becomes available, they may need to update their understanding of the situation and possibly revise their preferences. During a decision, as a preference develops for one alternative course of action, a nonconscious goal of maintaining consistency between that preference, however tentative, and the new information can lead to an interpretation of that information so as to support the current preference. This tendency to bias or distort information to support the currently preferred option can in turn lead to even greater confidence in that leading option, …
