Establishing Breast Mri As A Standard Protocol For Cancer Detection In Women With Implants, Leslie Estela Ruiz, Katrine Gisell Franco, Lesly Karina Ortiz

Research Methods Poster Session 2026

Breast implants can limit the effectiveness of traditional imaging methods like mammography and ultrasound by obscuring underlying tissue and masking abnormalities. This literature review highlights findings from six studies demonstrating that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides superior accuracy in both cancer detection and implant evaluation. MRI consistently shows higher sensitivity and specificity, effectively identifying tumors, assessing their size and spread, and detecting implant ruptures with strong agreement to surgical outcomes. It also enables long-term monitoring by revealing silent complications and improving screening compliance in post-reconstruction patients. Overall, MRI offers enhanced tissue contrast and three-dimensional visualization, making it the most reliable …

Publications and Research

Anthocyanins are naturally occurring flavonoid pigments widely distributed in plants and are recognized for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their potential immunomodulatory effects remain poorly characterized, particularly regarding their direct interactions with key signaling cytokines. In this study, a set of selected anthocyanins was investigated using a hierarchical computational workflow targeting three major pro-inflammatory cytokines: interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-17 (IL-17), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Molecular docking analyses identified primulin and antirrhinin as the most favorable binders, forming stabilizing hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions within predicted cytokine interaction interfaces. To further assess the stability of these …

Understanding The Experiences Of Black Women Becoming Single Mothers By Choice Using Assisted Reproductive Technology, Jessica Chantal Prepetit Apr 2026

Understanding The Experiences Of Black Women Becoming Single Mothers By Choice Using Assisted Reproductive Technology, Jessica Chantal Prepetit

Theses & Dissertations

The term Single Mothers by Choice (SMBC) refers to women who choose to have a child without a partner. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), ovarian reserve decreases with a woman’s age. Women are born with approximately 1 million eggs; this number decreases over time. When a woman reaches 35 years of age, which is considered advanced maternal age, their egg count and quality decline. These factors of low ovarian reserve can place a woman in a category of infertility. Also, a woman may unknowingly suffer from uterine abnormalities that may hinder a successful pregnancy. As women …

Deep Learning Based Approaches For Low Cost Defense Detection, Adele J. Noel-Rickert Apr 2026

Deep Learning Based Approaches For Low Cost Defense Detection, Adele J. Noel-Rickert

All NMU Master's Theses

Pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive interstitial lung disease characterized by the accumulation of fibrotic tissue within the lungs, leading to impaired respiratory function and reduced quality of life. Early detection is important for disease management; however, accurate diagnosis often relies on high-resolution computed tomography (CT), which may not be accessible in all clinical settings. Chest radiography provides a lower-cost and widely available imaging modality, but interpretation of chest X-rays for fibrotic disease can be challenging due to subtle radiographic patterns and overlapping anatomical structures. This thesis investigates the use of multimodal deep learning techniques to assist in pul- monary fibrosis …

Multicenter Evaluation Of Ceftazidime/Avibactam In Pediatric Patients Across The United States: Real-World Insights Into The Management Of Drug-Resistant Gram-Negative Infections, Taylor Morrisette, Christine R Lockowitz, Valerie Yuenger, Evan E Facer, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance among gram-negative pathogens is a global threat, with children particularly vulnerable due to limited treatment options and age-specific clinical outcomes data. Ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) is effective against resistant gram-negative bacteria and demonstrates high success rates in adults; however, pediatric data remain limited. This study examined CZA use in children across United States medical centers.

METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective, observational cohort study included pediatric patients (< 18 years) who received ≥48 hours of CZA for suspected or confirmed gram-negative infections between February 2015 and October 2023. The primary outcome was clinical success, defined as occurrence of all 3 components: (1) absence of all-cause mortality within 30 days of CZA initiation, (2) absence of microbiologic and clinical recurrence within 30 days of CZA discontinuation, and (3) resolution or improvement of infection-related signs and symptoms during CZA therapy without modification of therapy due to clinical failure. Secondary outcomes included adverse events attributable to CZA and resistance development to CZA.

RESULTS: One-hundred patients were included, with most receiving CZA for targeted therapy (67%). The median (IQR) age and weight were 9.8 (1.9-15.9) years and 24.2 (12.2-49.9) kg, respectively. Nearly all patients (88%) had …

Ins-17 Acts As A Nutrient Deprivation Signal To Mediate Adult Iis-Regulated Associative Behaviors In C. Elegans, Emily J Leptich, Priyadharshini Vijayakumar, Edward W Pietryk, Meredith I Williams, Rachana Rajupalem, Rachel N Arey

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Insulin/Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling (IIS) is a pleiotropic signaling pathway that functions across tissues to coordinate phenotypic changes in response to nutrient status. Thus, the ubiquity of the IIS pathway hinders efforts to elucidate the mechanisms driving specific IIS-related phenotypes. Previous research in the nematode worm C. elegans has demonstrated that loss of function of the IIS transmembrane receptor (IR) ortholog, DAF-2, results in a doubled lifespan and enhanced learning and memory behaviors in young and aged animals. However, these findings are the result of reducing DAF-2 receptor function rather than modulating ligand-receptor interactions. In the current study, …

Despite invasive methods are the gold standard for intracranial pressure (ICP) measurement, several non-invasive techniques (nICP) have been proposed as surrogate, although their use remains insufficiently recognized in clinical practice. These include transcranial Doppler blood flow velocity  assessment (arterial or venous), optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), automated pupillometry, measurement of skull expansion and compliance, brain imaging, double-depth ophthalmic artery blood flow velocity, and ultrasound time-of-flight. The main limitations of all indirect methods are calibration and zeroing, which constrain the absolute accuracy of non-invasive ICP monitoring. For transcranial Doppler-based methods, the 95% limits of agreement are approximately ± 7-15 mmHg, while …

All Works

The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines introduce an important shift in public health nutrition, emphasizing minimally processed foods, higher protein intake, greater inclusion of full-fat dairy, and a food-based advice centered on “real food” consumption. While several of these recommendations align with accumulating evidence, particularly the discouragement of ultra-processed foods and added sugars, substantial concerns remain regarding their internal coherence, population-level applicability, risk of misinterpretation, as well as environmental footprint. This critical narrative review evaluates whether the scope, emphasis, and framing of the new guideline components are proportionate to the strength, consistency, and context of the underlying evidence. Using a novel framework …

Endocrine Roles Of Vitamin D In Female Reproduction: Mechanisms And Clinical Implications, Azza Alsuwaidi, Fatme Alanouti, Dimitrios Papandreou

All Works

Vitamin D a fat-soluble steroid hormone signals through Vitamin D Receptors (VDRs) located throughout the ovaries, uterus, placenta, hypothalamus, and pituitary gland, influencing immune regulation and female reproductive physiology. This review of studies from 2013-2025 found consistent associations between low vitamin D status and various disorders in women of childbearing age. In Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), deficiency correlates with higher symptom severity, and evidence shows that supplementation significantly reduces total PMS scores, particularly improving mood-related domains. For uterine pathologies such as fibroids, endometriosis, and adenomyosis, low vitamin D status is linked to increased risk and severity. Repletion trials suggest antifibrotic and …
