Diet, Gut Microbiota, And Intestinal Permeability: Emerging Mechanisms In Hypertension Pathogenesis, Esha Vashisht, Helen Nguyen, Francine Z. Marques, Matthew Snelson

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hypertension is a leading contributor to global morbidity and mortality, arising from the interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors together with the dysregulation of multiple physiological systems involved in blood pressure control. Recent advances have established the gut as a central regulator, implicating the intestinal microbiota and barrier integrity in the modulation of blood pressure. Alterations in the gut microbial consortium, along with changes in levels of metabolites produced by the microbiota, have been associated with blood pressure regulation in animal models and human studies. Key microbial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine-N-oxide, and bile acids influence endothelial function, …

Does Performing Partial Repetitions Beyond Momentary Failure Enhance Muscle Hypertrophy In Volume-Load-Equated Calf-Raise Resistance Training?, Amirali Goli, Parsa Attarieh, João Pedro Nunes, Saman Nehegadar, Saaed Khani, Mohmad Fashi, Sajjad Ahmadizad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The aim of this study was to determine whether extending traditional calf-raise resistance training sets with partial-range-of-motion (ROM) repetitions in the more dorsiflexed ROM enhances muscular hypertrophy. Sixteen untrained men (25.0±1.7y) completed 10 weeks of unilateral standing calf-raise training (2×/wk) in a within-subject design: one leg performed traditional 10-14RM sets to full-ROM momentary failure (MF; 4-6 sets/session) and the other leg performed half as many sets to full-ROM failure followed by partial-ROM repetitions to a second failure in the more dorsiflexed ROM (PBF; 2-3 sets/session). Total volume-load was equated between conditions; repetitions were counted the same way regardless of the …

Enhancing Physical Performance With Ischemic Preconditioning: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Moderators And Performance Outcomes, Yilin Zhang, Kai Xu, Hao Kong, Mingyue Yin, Chenghao Liu, Yun Xie, Liam Kilduff, Gustavo R. Mota, Olivier Girard

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study examined the effects of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on physical performance, considering the influence of timing, warm-up (WU), participant characteristics, and IPC protocols structure. A total of 90 trials (1,439 participants) were retrieved from three databases and assessed using PICOS criteria. Multilevel meta-analyses with cluster-robust variance adjustments were conducted to calculate pooled effect sizes (Hedge’s g). Risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using the RoB 2 tool and GRADE framework. IPC produced a trivial but significant improvement in physical performance (g = 0.13, P < 0.01), which persisted after excluding SHAM effects (g = 0.10; P < 0.01). Significant improvements were observed for maximum repetitions, time to failure, and power output, but not for jump ability, strength, or oxygen uptake. Comparable benefits were found for anaerobic (g = 0.15) and aerobic (g = 0.10) exercise, with greater effects in males and less-trained participants. Performance was further enhanced when IPC was followed by WU (g = 0.16), with the optimal IPC-to-WU interval being ~42 minutes. Without WU, the effective IPC window narrowed to 6–7 minutes. In practice, IPC can enhance physical performance, independently of sham effects, moderated by sex, training level, and WU. For competition or testing, the most effective strategy appears to be 3 or 4 × 5-min IPC protocol, followed by a 42-min interval, standardized warm-up, and endurance testing. For mechanistic studies, WU should be excluded, and testing conducted 6-7 minutes post-IPC. Future research should target women, middle-aged individuals, and elite athletes.

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others: Disentangling The Concepts Of Range Of Motion Versus Flexibility, And Flexibility Training Versus Stretching, José Afonso, Anthony J. Blazevich, David George Behm, Markus Tilp, Konstantin Warneke

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In this Current Opinion, we revisit key terminological distinctions in sports sciences, emphasizing the implications of conflating related but distinct concepts, particularly range of motion (ROM) versus flexibility and flexibility training versus stretching. While often used interchangeably, these terms represent nuanced constructs with distinct physiological and practical implications. ROM encompasses both modifiable (e.g., soft tissue extensibility, neural control) and non-modifiable factors (e.g., bone structure), whereas flexibility is only one of several trainable components of ROM, largely referring to the extensibility of periarticular soft tissues. Misunderstanding these distinctions risks erroneous assessments and inappropriate exercise prescriptions. We also challenge the common practice …

Factors That Impede Women's Contraceptive Care Needs During And Immediately After Incarceration In New South Wales, Australian. Qualitative Perspectives Of Professional Staff Working With Incarcerated Women, Helene Smith, Mandy Wilson, Basil Donovan, Jocelyn Jones, Tony Butler, Paul Simpson

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction: Women with a history of incarceration report higher rates of pregnancy and abortion, lower contraception use and poorer birth outcomes compared to other women in the community. This suggests family-planning and reproductive-health needs that are not well served by current models of care. Despite this, little is known about how contraception is provided within Australian carceral settings, or the structural barriers experienced by professional staff working in these environments. We report findings from a qualitative study conducted in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, describing professional staff's views of factors that support or impede women's contraceptive care needs both during …

Healthcare Professionals’ Perspectives On Implementing Postoperative Care Alongside Phase 1 Cardiac Rehabilitation: A Descriptive Qualitative Study, Dima Nasrawi, Sharon Latimer, Debbie Massey, Brigid M. Gillespie

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery, Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) implement postoperative patient care alongside Phase 1 Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR). Yet, HCPs’ experiences, including enablers and barriers to the implementation of postoperative care alongside Phase 1 CR, are largely unknown. This study aimed to explore HCPs’ perceptions of implementing postoperative care alongside Phase 1 CR, including assessing patient engagement, following CABG surgery.

Design: A qualitative study was undertaken using semi-structured interviews with 10 HCPs in a cardiothoracic unit at a large Australian tertiary hospital. Interview questions were underpinned by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). Using purposive sampling, HCPs (registered …
