Introduction: Falls are a major health concern for older adults, particularly those with cognitive impairment. Many factors contribute to the risk of falls, making it a complex issue to manage. Aim: This systematic review aimed to identify and describe the implementation strategies used for fall prevention in community-dwelling older people with cognitive impairment. Eligibility criteria: The review included studies on fall prevention interventions for community-dwelling adults aged > 50 years with cognitive impairment. Eligible studies were primary research, including experimental, quasi-experimental, qualitative, and mixed methods designs, with detailed implementation strategies. Systematic reviews, protocols, editorials, opinions, commentaries, and conference papers were excluded. …

A Collaborative Communities-Of-Practice Methodology For Environmental Design Research: A Case Study Application In Palliative Care, Emil E. Jonescu, Benjamin Farrell, Chamil Erik Ramanayaka, Lori Delaney, Edward Litton, Talia J. Uylaki, Gareth Watts, Bella Brigham, Frances Bellemore, Davinia Seah

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Environmental design in palliative care settings receives increasing attention, yet methodologies for studying such environments often lack interdisciplinary integration. Traditional research designs may overlook the lived expertise of clinicians and designers. Objectives: This article describes a collaborative, cross-disciplinary communities-of-practice model developed as a methodological framework to enable effective environmental evaluation and design processes in healthcare settings. Its application is illustrated through a case study in a palliative care unit. Methods: A co-designed, multi-methods approach was developed by a team of clinicians, facility managers, and academic researchers. The methodology included a scoping review, site-specific environmental data logging (sound, temperature, lighting), and …

Research Priorities For Nursing And Allied Health: A Priority-Setting Project Using A Partnership Approach, Marina Weckend, Lucy Gent, Erin Godecke, Linda Coventry, Gemma Doleman, Amanda Towell-Barnard, Lisa Whitehead Jan 2026

Research Priorities For Nursing And Allied Health: A Priority-Setting Project Using A Partnership Approach, Marina Weckend, Lucy Gent, Erin Godecke, Linda Coventry, Gemma Doleman, Amanda Towell-Barnard, Lisa Whitehead

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Research priorities guide research activities, funding and resources within health services. To ensure that research efforts are meaningful and impactful, it is vital that organisational research agendas reflect the priorities of both healthcare consumers and staff, alongside broader national and international research frameworks. This paper outlines a research priority-setting project conducted across two hospitals in Western Australia, aimed at identifying shared research priorities through a collaborative and inclusive approach. Aim: To identify the top ten nursing and allied health research priorities for two hospitals in Western Australia. Methods: A modified James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership approach was used, …

Reducing No-Show Rates In A Rural Family Medicine Clinic Through Personal Phone Call Reminders, Joyce Bumgardner Jan 2026

Reducing No-Show Rates In A Rural Family Medicine Clinic Through Personal Phone Call Reminders, Joyce Bumgardner

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Missed patient appointments cost the healthcare industry billions annually, reducing provider accessibility and practice revenue. At a rural family medicine office in western Lincoln County, North Carolina, new patient no-show rates exceeded 10%, surpassing the healthcare system’s goal of 5% or less. Automated appointment reminders via text, phone, and email were already in place, but did not adequately address the problem. New patient appointments occupy a 40-minute time slot, twice that of established patients, increasing the impact of each missed appointment.

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine whether personal phone call reminders made with …

Gratitude Journaling And Mindfulness To Mitigate Burnout In Mental Health Staff, Jennifer Davis Jan 2026

Gratitude Journaling And Mindfulness To Mitigate Burnout In Mental Health Staff, Jennifer Davis

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Burnout among mental health professionals in inpatient behavioral health settings negatively affects staff well-being, job satisfaction, and patient care quality. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project evaluated the effectiveness of an 8-week mindfulness and gratitude journaling program implemented on a rural behavioral health unit in North Carolina. Guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, the intervention aimed to enhance resilience and workplace wellness through daily mindfulness and reflective journaling practices. A repeated cross-sectional design using anonymous pre- and post-intervention surveys was conducted with 30 staff participants. Thirty participants enrolled in the study, and 24 completed the …

Enhancing Clinical Judgement In Pre-Licensure Nursing Students Through Active Learning Strategies Of Unfolding Case Studies And Simulations For Postpartum Hemorrhage, Lisa M. Alley Jan 2026

Enhancing Clinical Judgement In Pre-Licensure Nursing Students Through Active Learning Strategies Of Unfolding Case Studies And Simulations For Postpartum Hemorrhage, Lisa M. Alley

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

New graduate nurses lack the appropriate clinical judgement to provide optimal, safe, quality care, as evidenced by the report of errors in health care (Rodziewicz et al., 2024). The purpose of this project was to provide an evidence-based intervention that used an unfolding case study and simulation to further develop clinical judgement among undergraduate nursing students in a rural ADN program. The project used a pre-test and post-test to measure students' improvement prior to versus after the learning experience and debrief. This project also introduced a DASH tool, which is a debriefing assessment for simulations in healthcare, to help students …

Enhancing Mass Casualty Incident Preparedness: Bridging The Gap Between Education And Practice, Emily M. Coggins Jan 2026

Enhancing Mass Casualty Incident Preparedness: Bridging The Gap Between Education And Practice, Emily M. Coggins

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The increasing amount of mass casualty incidents (MCIs), such as natural disasters, large-scale emergencies, and active shooter events, has emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to respond effectively. Traditional undergraduate nursing curriculum often offers limited opportunities for students to practice disaster preparedness through simulated experiences. This DNP project was created to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing an MCI training simulation to increase the confidence and competence of senior pre-licensure nursing students when responding to a mass casualty event. The project implemented a 1-day, simulation-based MCI event for senior nursing students enrolled in an Adult Health II course. The event included …

Senior Heart Health Facilitating Hypertension Management, Heather Hodgens Lupo Jan 2026

Senior Heart Health Facilitating Hypertension Management, Heather Hodgens Lupo

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Hypertension affects approximately 70% of adults aged 65 years and older and remains a leading contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the United States, highlighting the need for effective community-based hypertension management interventions. Despite the availability of evidence-based guidelines, gaps in education and self-management persist among older adults. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project, Senior Heart Health: Facilitating Hypertension Management, was designed to improve hypertension-related knowledge among adults aged 55 years and older through a structured, community-based health coaching intervention.

The project was implemented in a rural community and consisted of four weekly educational sessions delivered …
