Dynamics Of Multiple Sustainable Agricultural Intensification Practices Adoption: Application Of The Intertemporal Multivariate Probit Model, Ali Mohammed Oumer, Michael Burton, Menale Kassie

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Applying an intertemporal multivariate probit model, we reveal complex complementarity and substitution effects as well as new insights on the drivers of adopting input-intensive and natural resource management (NRM) practices in rural Ethiopia. First, the latent factor that drives each practice is positively and significantly correlated across time, suggesting persistency in adoption decisions. Second, the significant synergies and tradeoffs between the input-intensive and NRM practices underscore that these practices are highly compatible and, hence the importance of promoting technology packages. Third, the covariates that drive adoption significantly differ between practices, reflecting the heterogeneity in farmer behavior. Farm size was associated …

Dentistry And The Law: What You Should Know About Collecting Past-Due Accounts, Daniel Schulte J.D.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Michigan law regulates debt collection practices for dental offices collecting past-due accounts. While practices can collect their own debts, they must follow specific restrictions regarding workplace communications. The law prohibits harassment, deceptive practices, and sharing debt information with employers or coworkers. Contact at workplaces must be discreet, civil, and cease if the patient expresses inconvenience. Communications are restricted between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. without permission.

Ecmo In Pediatric Oncologic And Hsct Patients: A Descriptive And Comparative Analysis, Michelle Brown

Presentations

Introduction: Pediatric oncologic and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients are vulnerable to development of respiratory failure due to chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and immunosuppression. Yet, providing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support in these patient populations remains controversial with heterogenous utilization across pediatric institutions. The aim of this study is to characterize and compare outcomes in pediatric oncologic and HSCT patients with respiratory failure in the presence and absence of ECMO support. Methods: This study was a retrospective matched comparative analysis between two tertiary care pediatric institutions. Patients less than 18 years old with an underlying oncologic diagnosis and/or HSCT with …

D-Transposition Of The Great Arteries With Right Aortic Arch, Bilateral Ductus With Ductal Origin Of The Left Subclavian Artery And Abnormal Aortic Origin Of The Left Coronary Artery, Jenna Schermerhorn, Anmol Goyal, Param Vora, Braidyn Wells, Edo Bedzra, Sanket Shah

Posters

We present a case of prenatally diagnosed d-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) with intact ventricular septum (IVS), postnatally found to have bilateral patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with potential for isolation of the left subclavian artery (LSA) and an abnormal left coronary artery (LCA) course. Isolation of the LSA is a rare occurrence and defined as an anomalous origin from the pulmonary artery via PDA and apparent discontinuation from the arch following PDA closure. It is exceedingly rare in association with d-TGA. Coronary artery anatomy is particularly important in d-TGA given most patients undergo the arterial switch operation (ASO).

Evaluating Generalizability Of Oncology Trial Results To Real-World Patients Using Machine Learning-Based Trial Emulations, Xavier Orcutt, Kan Chen, Ronac Mamtani, Qi Long, Ravi B Parikh

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating anti-cancer agents often lack generalizability to real-world oncology patients. Although restrictive eligibility criteria contribute to this issue, the role of selection bias related to prognostic risk remains unclear. In this study, we developed TrialTranslator, a framework designed to systematically evaluate the generalizability of RCTs for oncology therapies. Using a nationwide database of electronic health records from Flatiron Health, this framework emulates RCTs across three prognostic phenotypes identified through machine learning models. We applied this approach to 11 landmark RCTs that investigated anti-cancer regimens considered standard of care for the four most prevalent advanced solid malignancies. …

Breathing is a complex neuromuscular process vital to sustain life. In preclinical animal models, the study of respiratory motor control is primarily accomplished through neurophysiologic recordings and functional measurements of respiratory output. Neurophysiologic recordings that target neural or muscular output via direct nerve recordings or respiratory muscle electromyography (EMG) are commonly collected during anesthetized conditions. While offering tight control of experimental preparations, the use of anesthesia results in respiratory depression, may impact cardiovascular control, eliminates the potential to record volitional nonventilatory behaviors, and can limit translation. Since the diaphragm is a unique muscle which is rhythmically active and difficult to …

Acute Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Secondary To Handcuffs Necessitating Emergency Orthopedic Consultation And Operative Intervention, Fabian Jano, Kelly Mackenzie, Vivek Biololikar, David Goldberger, Andrei Tuluca

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

We present a case of acute carpal tunnel syndrome secondary to tight handcuffs in a detained patient. The severity of the motor and sensory deficits prompted consultation with orthopedic specialists and admission for an observation period with ultimate emergency operative intervention. Handcuff neuropathies are well documented in the literature, mainly involving the superficial branch of the radial nerve, which has strict sensory input into the dorsum of the hand. Less common median nerve neuropathies have also been documented following handcuff injury; however, none have required emergency intervention. We aim to highlight this unusual presentation and the emergency nature of the …

Surgery Articles

INTRODUCTION: Dysfunction of the sacroiliac (SI) joint exists in nearly one-third of patients with lower back pain. There are nuances in diagnosing SI joint dysfunction with a combination of physical exam maneuvers and intra-articular injections. The management of patients with SI joint pain can include posterior pelvic fixation, which traditionally has been described using fluoroscopy to obtain safe placement of implants.

CASE REPORT: In this technique guide, we would like to introduce a novel technique of using Stealth navigation to facilitate SI fusion with the iFuse-TORQ implant.

CONCLUSION: SI dysfunction is a common cause of low back pain that can …

Current phototherapeutic approaches in cancer treatment include photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) therapy, which harness light energy for the activation of a photoactive molecule resulting in the destruction of cancer cells. In PTT, generated local heat kills abnormal cells; whereas, in PDT, a series of biochemical reactions generating reactive oxygen species is responsible for cellular damage. However, a major concern arises in the cellular delivery of an optimal amount of a photoactive molecule required for the desired effect. In this work, we employed IR-820, a new Indocyanine green dye, in a liposomal formulation to maximize its delivery to cancer cells …

Off-target neuronal injury is a serious side-effect observed in cancer survivors. It has previously been shown that pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors have a decline in neurocognition compared to healthy age-matched counterparts. Elevated oxidative stress has been documented to be a mediator in off-target tissue damage in cancer survivors. Early detection of oxidative stress markers may provide an opportunity to prevent off-target tissue damage. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have surfaced as a potential diagnostic tool due to molecular cargo they contain. We investigated the potential for EVs to be a sensitive indicator of oxidative stress and off-target tissue damage by …

Approximately half of all antimicrobial prescriptions in intensive care units (ICUs) may be inappropriate, including those prescribed when not needed, in unnecessary combinations or for longer durations than needed. Inappropriate prescribing is costly, exposes patients to unnecessary side-effects and drives population-level antimicrobial resistance, the prevalence and consequences of which are greatest in low- and middle-income countries. However, the implementation of interventions to improve the appropriateness of antimicrobial prescribing has been variable and requires further study..
