Impact Of N-Acetylcysteine In Non-Acetaminophen-Induced Acute Liver Failure: A Retrospective Analysis, Edward Ramirez, Alana Whittaker, Kaylee Putney
Annual Research Symposium
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been widely used in the treatment of liver failure secondary to acetaminophen overdose. At Valley Hospital Medical Center (VHMC) and other Valley Health System hospitals, NAC has been used as an off-label treatment for non-acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure (NAI-ALF) and ischemic hepatitis. Studies have shown NAC is safe for use in NAI-ALF and may provide a survival benefit in native liver without transplantation. While some evidence suggests potential benefits of NAC for NAI-ALF, lack of robust, high-quality studies limits its widespread adoption and routine use. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of NAC …

Challenges In Diagnosing And Treating Fungal Endocarditis: A Case Report Of Recurrent Candida Endocarditis In A Hemodialysis Patient, Ghaidaa Almuhammadi, Rawia Alzughaibi, Lamar Amer, Talal Alzahrani
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Fungal endocarditis (FE) is a rare yet life-threatening condition, especially in hemodialysis (HD) patients with indwelling long-term catheters. Symptoms often overlap with non-fungal infective endocarditis, making diagnosis difficult. As FE incidence increases, healthcare providers face challenges in diagnosing and managing this severe condition. Early suspicion of FE is crucial for patients with long-term catheters. We reported a 23-year-old male with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on HD that developed FE affecting the tricuspid valve, requiring valve replacement and anti-fungal medication. Despite these interventions, he had recurrent Candida prosthetic endocarditis(CPE). Currently, he is receiving anti-fungal medication, with plans for a third surgery.

The Safety Of Ramadan Fasting In Chronic Heart Failure Patients With Reduced Ejection Fraction, Ahmed Farouk Alaarag, Mahmoud Abd Elkhalek Abou-Omar, Osama Ahmed Amin
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives: Even though Islam excludes the sick from Ramadan Fasting (RF), countless Muslims choose to fast throughout this holy month. So, it is of paramount importance to review how RF influences patients with chronic Heart Failure with reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF). Our study intended to check the safety of RF in these patients.
Methods: We selected patients under 75 years old with compensated chronic HFrEF. After applying all the exclusion conditions, those who insisted on fasting during the coming Ramadan were enrolled in fasting Group I (90 patients). Those who decided not to fast were listed as control Group …

Familiarity Of Psychiatric Terms Among College Students, Julia Pekala
Familiarity Of Psychiatric Terms Among College Students, Julia Pekala
CAFE Symposium 2025
Recently, there has been an increase in the usage of psychiatric terminology used among internet users. Terms such as autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are thrown around without an understanding of these words and their true meaning. These words are picked up and used in a similar context as any other internet lingo, in an ironic, joking manner, without proper consideration of their origins and meaning. Due to most content on the internet being unmoderated and seemingly endless, users are often faced with misleading information about real clinical disorders. The use of these words follows the …

How The Common Cold Impacts Learning, Catherine Mastroly
How The Common Cold Impacts Learning, Catherine Mastroly
CAFE Symposium 2025
When someone gets the common cold, their ability to learn declines. As we know, symptoms such as coughing, congestion, and tiredness are present. However, many people may not know the extent of the effects of having a cold. In this paper, we look at how brain inflammation causes cognitive decline. Taking the functions of the brain while learning happens and linking it to the impact of immune response to the common cold in the brain, we are able to understand why and to what extent learning is impaired. As a college student, having this information is important in order to …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations
Objective
Female sex has been associated with improved survival after lung cancer resection. Our aim is to use a national database to describe sex disparities in early lung cancer treatment and evaluate whether outcomes of ethnic groups who traditionally have poorer outcomes are attenuated by female sex. Methods
This is a retrospective cohort study using the 2020 National Cancer Database. Adult patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2019 with early-stage non–small cell lung cancer (clinical T1 or T2, N0, M0) who received surgical resection with a known vital status were included. Patients who received neoadjuvant systemic or radiation therapy were excluded. …Evaluation Of Platelet Rich Fibrin With Biodentine In Direct Pulp Therapy Of Permanent Teeth - An In-Vivo Study, Rhea M Dr, Shruthi Nagaraja Dr

Novel Biomarkers Of Fetal And Neonatal Environmental Exposure, Effect And Susceptibility, Cynthia F. Bearer
Faculty Scholarship
Abstract: Rapid advancements in science and technology have allowed medical providers to treat wider ranges of diseases with safer and more effective therapies than ever before. One of the areas of health that has been consistently understudied, however, is one that affects us all: environmental health or the effects that the chemicals we are exposed to every day have on our acute and chronic health. This effect can be exacerbated during and shortly after pregnancy, as an individual exposure is often shared by both the mother and the fetus/neonate. The diagnosis and monitoring of chemical exposure can be quite challenging, …

Background: Aging is frequently accompanied by multimorbidity, the presence of multiple chronic conditions, which contributes to declines in both cognitive and physical function and presents complex health challenges. One such challenge is Polypharmacy (PP), defined as the concurrent use of more than five medications. Methods: We used data from participants older than 50 years who were present in wave 6 and at least one of the subsequent three waves of the SHARE study, aiming to predict PP risk at 2, 4, and 6-year intervals. We selected the predictor variables using LASSO regression and evaluated eight ML models using a rigorous …

Staff Education: Antihypertensive Medication Adherence In The Primary Care Clinic, Shannon Leigh Hilling
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
I completed a staff education project in a primary care clinic focused on increasing staff knowledge of antihypertensive medication adherence. More than 1 in 3 adults in West Virginia (or 41% of the adult population in the state) has hypertension, which is equal to about 602,000 adults. The project question was developed to investigate the extent to which education on hypertensive medications will enhance staff knowledge and their ability to educate patients in the primary care clinic. The staff education project was implemented via PowerPoint, pre-/post education testing, and measurements using an online percentage gain calculator. Findings revealed an overall …
