Increasing Knowledge And Awareness Of Colorectal Cancer Among Nursing Staff, Joelle Woodruff
Increasing Knowledge And Awareness Of Colorectal Cancer Among Nursing Staff, Joelle Woodruff
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, colon cancer rates have dropped since the 1980s as more people are being screened for colorectal cancer. However, despite an increase in screening, rates are expected to increase through 2035. Patients who have a good relationship with their providers are more likely to complete colorectal cancer screening. However, providers rely on support staff to educate patients on the screenings. The local organization has struggled to improve cancer screening rates among its patients. Thus, the purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine whether an education intervention focused on colorectal cancer and screening …

Introduction: The current study assessed the impact of self-reported stress measures on microRNA (miRNA) profiles in saliva exosomes. Saliva is one of the most accessible and non-invasive bodily fluids and exosomal miRNAs in saliva could be useful in (1) measuring stress states and (2) distinguishing between individuals suffering from high levels of chronic stress vs. adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). miRNAs are small, noncoding RNAs that act as gene regulators. Several studies have shown differential expressions of certain miRNA in neurological diseases and in stress, post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) and anxiety. Detailed analyses of miRNA expressions and profiling of miRNAs among …

Inflammation is a significant driver of ischemic stroke pathology in the brain. To identify potential regulators of inflammation, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of young and aged mouse brains following stroke and found that interferon alpha-inducible protein 27 like 2 A (Ifi27l2a) was significantly up-regulated, particularly in microglia of aged brain. Ifi27l2a is induced by interferons for viral host defense and has been linked with pro-inflammatory cellular mechanisms. However, its potential role in neurodegeneration is unknown. Using a combination of cell culture, experimental stroke models in mice, and human autopsy brain samples, we demonstrated that induction of Ifi27l2a occurs …

Paired-class homeodomain (HD) transcription factors (TFs) play essential roles in vertebrate development, and their mutations are linked to human diseases. One unique feature of a paired-class HD is cooperative dimerization on specific palindrome DNA sequences. Yet, the functional significance of HD cooperative dimerization in animal development and its dysregulation in diseases remains elusive. Using the retinal TF cone-rod homeobox (CRX) as a model, we have studied how blindness-causing mutations in the paired HD, p.E80A and p.K88N, alter CRX's cooperative dimerization, leading to gene misexpression and photoreceptor developmental deficits in dominant manners. CRX

Adaptive immunity is critical in eliminating tumors, but cancer-intrinsic factors can subvert this function. Melanoma antigen-A4 (MAGE-A4), a cancer-testis antigen, is expressed in solid tumors and correlates with poor survival, but its role in tumorigenesis and antitumor immunity remains unclear. We found that expression of MAGE-A4 was highly associated with the loss of PTEN, a tumor suppressor, in human non–small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). Here, we show that constitutive expression of human MAGE-A4 with Pten loss in mouse airway epithelia results in metastatic adenocarcinoma. Tumors showed distinct enrichment in IgA+ CD138+ CXCR4+ plasma cells (PCs) and increased expression of …

Impulsivity represents an individual's tendency to act on urges without sufficient forethought. Heightened impulsivity is a hallmark of many mental health disorders. Objective impulsivity assessments could improve risk evaluation, diagnosis, and behavioral outcome monitoring in impulsivity-related health disorders. Towards objective impulsivity assessment, in this work, we identify impulsivity correlates in objective measurements, investigate their complementarity, and contrast impulsivity mechanisms across health conditions. We analyzed behavioral tests, heart rate variability (HRV), and fMRI-based brain connectivity in 227 healthy participants and 34 participants with mood disorders. Impulsivity dimensions had complementary correlates in objective measurements, with fMRI providing the strongest correlates. Multimodal assessment …

Background: Endometriosis, a poorly studied gynecological condition, is characterized by the presence of ectopic endometrial lesions resulting in pelvic pain, inflammation, and infertility. These associated symptoms contribute to a significant burden, often exacerbated by delayed diagnosis. Current diagnostic methods involve invasive procedures, and existing treatments provide no cure.
Methods: Microbiome-metabolome signatures in stool samples from individuals with and without endometriosis were determined using unbiased metabolomics and 16S bacteria sequencing. Functional studies for selected microbiota-derived metabolites were conducted in vitro using patient-derived cells and in vivo by employing murine and human xenograft pre-clinical disease models.
Findings: We discovered a unique bacteria-derived …

The trabecular meshwork within the outflow apparatus is critical in maintaining intraocular pressure homeostasis. In vitro studies employing primary cell cultures of the human trabecular meshwork (hTM) have conventionally served as surrogates for investigating the pathobiology of TM dysfunction. Despite its abundant use, translation of outcomes from in vitro studies to ex vivo and/or in vivo studies remains a challenge. Given the cell heterogeneity, performing single-cell RNA sequencing comparing primary hTM cell cultures to hTM tissue may provide important insights on cellular identity and translatability, as such an approach has not been reported before. In this study, we assembled a …

Research in progress for ENGL 1302: Composition II
Faculty Mentor: Lisa Roy-Davis, PhD
I am pleased to introduce Caroline Peacock’s excellent work “Classical Ballet: The Progressive Preservation of Tradition,” a research essay she wrote for my English 1302 class in the fall 2023 semester. Adapted from Bruce Ballenger’s textbook, The Curious Writer, the Research Essay assignment encourages students to foreground the role of inquiry by narrating their questions and how their sources address and extend those questions. When students prioritize questions over answers, their writing then demonstrates the value of “thinking on the page,” or the forward …

Periodontitis Linked With Urinary Tract Infections- Coincidence Or Causality?, Ali Shariff, Shankargouda Patil, Shilpa Bhandi, Frank Licari

Urinary tract infection is a cumulative term used to describe an infection of any part of the urinary system. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the tooth-supporting structures. The literature points towards an inter-relationship between periodontitis and other systemic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart diseases, etc. Several studies indicate a pathophysiologic inter-relationship between periodontitis and urinary tract infections. Considering the inflammatory nature of periodontitis and urinary tract infections, a common link of causality may be present between the two diseases. P. gingivalis, a key periodontal pathogen, is a significant agent in disseminating infection …

Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Completion Rate Among African American Patients By Staff Education, Sloan Mccoy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States and disproportionately affects the African American population with a higher incidence and mortality rate. This DNP project was implemented in a suburban primary care practice which is part of a large metropolitan health care organization. I implemented staff education about the CRC completion disparity with the African American population and communication strategies found to help improve this. My goal was for the primary care practice staff to increase their knowledge and change their practice behavior with recommending CRC screening to improve CRC screening rates amongst …
