Journal of Extension

This study explored Extension nutrition educators’ (NEs) perceptions of community members’ challenges and opportunities for achieving a healthy lifestyle. NEs represented various communities with low income across nine states. NEs across locations identified similar barriers (i.e., lack of access and availability of healthy and affordable foods; access to transportation; and financial insecurity) and opportunities (i.e., trustworthy and free nutrition education resources and programs; and access to food banks, food pantries, and health care professionals) that prevented or facilitated a healthful lifestyle. Future research should explore key community stakeholder and community member perceptions to guide the development of community-driven interventions.

Inadequate Intensification Of Ldl-Cholesterol Lowering Therapy After Coronary Revascularization: Insights From The Gould Registry, Benjamin E Peterson, Deepak L Bhatt, Christie M Ballantyne, James A De Lemos, Robert S Rosenson, Mikhail N Kosiborod, Christopher P Cannon

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Patients with a history of coronary revascularization are at a higher risk for subsequent cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Lowering LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels post-revascularization significantly reduces these risks.

Methods: This analysis compared LDL-C-lowering therapies at baseline and over time among patients with and without prior coronary revascularization in the GOULD registry (a prospective multicenter cohort study). Baseline- and 24-month follow-up characteristics-including LDL-C levels and strategies for lipid-lowering therapy (LLT)-were evaluated.

Results: Out of 5006 patients, 2195 (43.8%) had prior coronary revascularization. At baseline, these patients had lower LDL-C (99.2 mg/dL vs. 102.5 mg/dL; p < 0.001) and were more likely to be on intensive LLT (52.8% vs. 42.7%; p < 0.001). At 24 months, they had small reductions in LDL-C (-15.6% vs. -13.7%; p = 0.145) and were more likely to be on intensive LLT (61.9% vs. 51.5%; p < 0.001). Similar LDL-C reductions were observed in the PCSK9i group regardless of revascularization status.

Conclusions: Despite slightly better baseline …

Acute Care For Elders Unit Implementation At Banner Health: A Quality Improvement Analysis, Jacob Lahti, Tony Gaidici, Shreya Bharath, Esha Saraswat, Nimit Agarwal

Annual Research Symposium

There is an increasing need to optimize hospital care for older adults as Age Friendly Health Systems (AFHS) become increasingly popular. Geriatric patients may often be subject to extended hospital stays, which can result in functional decline, increases in hospital-acquired injury, infections, and neurocognitive deterioration. Early acute inpatient rehabilitation (IRF) is known to improve functional optimization of older adults as compared to therapy in a skilled nursing facility (SNF). In this study we demonstrate the effect of a structured program based on the 4Ms of AFHS in our newly established Acute Care for Elders (ACE) unit, a first in Arizona. …

High-Output Cardiac Failure Caused By Large Coronary Artery Fistulas Treated With Coil Embolization, Nawal Mustafa, Blain Tafaesse, Hajra Nadeem, Muhammad Mustafa

The VAD Journal

There are many causes of high-output cardiac failure. We present a unique case of high-output cardiac failure caused by multiple coronary-to-pulmonary artery (PA) fistulas, which, to our knowledge, is a rare finding that has not been previously researched. The purpose of our case report is to highlight the importance of considering coronary-to-PA fistulas in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with high-output cardiac failure. Our patient presented to the emergency department with shortness of breath and underwent nuclear stress testing, which, through cardiac catheterization, revealed coronary-to-PA fistulas as the cause of the high-output cardiac failure. These fistulas were successfully treated …

The Development Of Teacher Identity In Counselor Education Doctoral Students, Wes Allen, Joel F. Diambra, Rebecca Gaylor

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Abstract

Counselor educators (CE) prepare counselor education doctoral students (CEDS) to work as counselors, scholars, leaders, supervisors, and teachers. While we have a firm understanding of how CEDS develop in general (Limberg et al., 2013; Moss et al., 2014), there is little known about how they develop specifically as teachers. The goal of this research study was to gain insight into how teacher identity develops for CEDS. We interviewed 10 participants using transcendental phenomenology methodology to gain insight into their teaching preparation experiences and identities as teachers. We identified three primary themes from the data: (1) Connection, (2) Confidence, or …

Impact Of Educational Models On Student Confidence In Acute Care Physical Therapy: A Comparative Analysis, Robert Dekerlegand, Pt, Mpt, Phd, Ccs

Department of Physical Therapy Posters

Background and Purpose

  • Hybrid and blended education have evolved as innovative models to deliver physical therapy (PT) education.1
  • PT faculty rapidly integrated these models into their pedagogy during the COVID pandemic in 2020 and many have retained these methods.1
  • Assessment of these models most frequently use cognitive indicators of learning outcomes (e.g. National Physical Therapy Examination).2
  • Noncognitive indicators (e.g. confidence and self-efficacy), should be considered when assessing new educational models in PT given their relationship with competency and career direction.3-5
  • The impact of “distance models” on noncognitive learning indicators is of particular value to acute care …

Bystanders To Bias: Witnessing Gendered Microaggressions Affects Men's And Women's Outcomes In Stem Small Group Contexts, Nadia Vossoughi, Logan C. Burley, Ryan P. Foley, Lorelle A. Meadows, Denise Sekaquaptewa

Michigan Tech Publications

We tested whether merely witnessing gendered microaggressions affects group work experiences among male and female undergraduate computer science and engineering students. Across three experiments (N = 753), we randomly assigned computer science and engineering students to witness microaggressions targeting female students, or control interactions, using a video manipulation. Witnessing microaggressions-compared to the control-resulted in heightened gender-specific stereotyping concerns, with women being concerned about appearing incompetent and men being concerned with appearing sexist. For both women and men, witnessing microaggressions resulted in decreased enthusiasm for participating in group work. Moreover, for women, the relationship between decreased enthusiasm and witnessing microaggressions was …

Utilizing Food As An Art Medium In Eating Disorders Treatment, Keren Blumenthal Yanir Feb 2025

Utilizing Food As An Art Medium In Eating Disorders Treatment, Keren Blumenthal Yanir

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This research explored food as an art medium in an innovative art therapy intervention for adults with eating disorders (EDs) and what this nontraditional art material can evoke. Several interventions (e.g., food exposure, cooking, and some family-based therapy) incorporate food in ED treatment, but none use it as an art medium.

Six Israeli adults (one with bulimia nervosa, two with atypical anorexia, and three with anorexia nervosa) individually participated in three meetings, each with a 30-min experiential component and an interview. While wearing a GoPro camera, participants created spontaneous artwork using foods (e.g., vegetables, legumes, pasta, flour, candy). The researcher …

Proxy Panels Enable Privacy-Aware Outsourcing Of Genotype Imputation, Degui Zhi, Xiaoqian Jiang, Arif Harmanci

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

One of the major challenges in genomic data sharing is protecting participants' privacy in collaborative studies and in cases when genomic data are outsourced to perform analysis tasks, for example, genotype imputation services and federated collaborations genomic analysis. Although numerous cryptographic methods have been developed, these methods may not yet be practical for population-scale tasks in terms of computational requirements, rely on high-level expertise in security, and require each algorithm to be implemented from scratch. In this study, we focus on outsourcing of genotype imputation, a fundamental task that utilizes population-level reference panels, and develop protocols that rely on using …

Effects Of Sex And Cross-Sex Hormone Treatment On Renal Mct/Smct Expression Following Prepubertal Gonadectomy, Annie Lee, Qing Zhang, Hao Wei, Melanie A. Felmlee

Pacific Faculty Work

Background: Kidney proton- and sodium-dependent monocarboxylate transporters (MCT/SMCT) are involved in the renal reabsorption of substrates, and thus factors involved in their regulation may have pharmacokinetic implications. Previous studies have demonstrated sex hormone-dependent regulation of MCTs and SMCTs in tissues involved in drug disposition. The present study evaluates the impact of puberty on renal MCT/SMCT expression with ovariectomy and castration conducted before puberty, removing the initial exposure to sex hormones. Methods: Male and female rats were castrated or ovariectomized before puberty (4 weeks of age), and subsequently treated with testosterone, 17β-estradiol, progesterone, or both 17β-estradiol and progesterone for 21 days …
