Artificial Intelligence Will Never Feel What We Feel, Michelle C. Dziurgot D.D.S.
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The editorial discusses the fundamental difference between human emotions and artificial intelligence, using "The Jetsons" character Rosie as a metaphor. While acknowledging AI's superior performance in certain tasks and its growing industry presence, the author emphasizes that AI lacks true feelings and cognitive common sense. The piece argues that while AI is a valuable tool for enhancing productivity and bridging skill gaps, it should be embraced as an aid rather than a replacement for human emotional intelligence.

Profiles And Well-Being Of Older Adult Caregivers In Singapore, Yi Wen Tan, Rachel Wen Yi Ngu, Kenneth Choo, Lydia Ng, Wensi Lim
ROSA Research Briefs
In Singapore, the government espouses a “many helping hands” philosophy towards caregiving, where care for older adults is borne by three pillars: the family, the community, and the state (Mehta & Vasoo, 2000). Of these, the family is regarded as the “first line of support”, rendering family caregivers essential to the care of older adults (Ng et al., 2016). Many of these caregivers are themselves older adults, where the average age of caregivers was found to be 62 years (Tan, 2023). As Singapore’s population continues to age, alongside demographic trends of extended longevity and a shrinking population, many more will …

Data interoperability is crucial for effectively combining data for scientific inquiry. To facilitate interoperability, data standards such as a common definition of variables are often developed. The Open Data Commons for Spinal Cord Injury (odc-sci.org) has established an initial set of community-based data elements (CoDEs)—a minimal set of variables for sharing—to promote data interoperability in SCI research, aligning with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles. We sought to understand the use of CoDEs by the SCI community to inform current standards adherence and future standards development. We systematically analyzed 39 public datasets in relation to 17 required CoDEs …

Contraceptive Hormone Influences On The Role Of Primary Reinforcement And Reinforcer-Enhancement In Nicotine Self-Administration, Kathleen Robin Mcnealy
Contraceptive Hormone Influences On The Role Of Primary Reinforcement And Reinforcer-Enhancement In Nicotine Self-Administration, Kathleen Robin Mcnealy
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Hormonal contraceptives contain a synthetic estrogen (e.g., ethinyl estradiol/EE) and/or a synthetic progestin (e.g., levonorgestrel/LEVO) and can exacerbate nicotine intake. However, whether altered intake reflects changes in nicotine reinforcement or enhancement by nicotine of co-occurring reinforcers is unknown. This reinforcer-enhancement effect is evidenced in rats when nicotine self-administration is increased by the presence of a visual stimulus (VS) reinforcer. This dissertation examined the effects of EE and LEVO on nicotine reinforcement and reinforcer-enhancement in ovary-intact female Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were implanted with a jugular catheter and assigned to receive daily injections of EE (Vehicle, 0.125 [Low], or 0.18 [High] μg/day; …

Evaluating Performance Of The Pre-Eclampsia Integrated Estimate Of Risk-Machine Learning (Piers-Ml) Model In A Kenya Cohort Of Women With Pre-Eclampsia, Felix Mogire Nyagaka
Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Introduction
Pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of significant maternal morbidity and mortality and complicates approximately 2%-4% of all pregnancies. Delivery is the only known definitive treatment. Pre-eclampsia can have unpredictable progression with sudden deterioration leading to severe adverse outcomes.
Currently, no adverse maternal risk prediction model is validated for use in sub-Saharan Africa. The new Pre-Eclampsia Integrated Estimate of Risk Machine Learning (PIERS-ML) model identifies women with pre-eclampsia who are at the lowest and greatest risk of severe adverse maternal outcomes within 48 hours of initial assessment and informs their care. Whereas, it has been validated for use in high …
Correlation Between Fetal Abdominal Wall Adiposity And Neonatal Outcomes, Elaine Murugi Nyaga
Correlation Between Fetal Abdominal Wall Adiposity And Neonatal Outcomes, Elaine Murugi Nyaga
Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology
BACKGROUND
Fetal growth is a result of complex interactions between genetic, nutritional, environmental, uteroplacental, and fetal factors which impact on delivery and subsequent neonatal outcomes. Fetal abdominal adiposity serves as an important indicator of fetal growth and body composition. While gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can influence fetal fat deposition, understanding how adiposity correlates with birth weight and neonatal outcomes in both GDM and non-GDM pregnancies provides insight into the broader significance of fetal adiposity as a marker of fetal health.
Methodology
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 269 pregnant women to examine fetal abdominal adiposity, measured as fetal abdominal subcutaneous …

The Apheresis Tandem Safety Timeout was implemented in 2017 at Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) to ensure safe, coordinated care when performing therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) alongside Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The first tandem procedure at CMH was performed in 2013, introducing a valuable tool for treating the sickest patients in the region. However, when patients are placed on two extracorporeal circuits simultaneously, the risk of complications increases significantly. These include electrolyte imbalances, anticoagulation challenges, hemodynamic instability, and the potential for either circuit to be compromised. The ECMO and Apheresis team recognized that even minor miscommunication could lead to life-threatening complications …

Local control approaches for bladder/prostate rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) may include surgery and/or radiation after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, with goal of maximizing long term function. We report a case of bladder RMS presenting with acute renal complications in a 2-year-old female necessitating bilateral nephrostomy tube placement before administration of chemotherapy. As local control for RMS is delayed until after 12 weeks of neoadjuvant chemotherapy has been given, management of medical complications prior to surgery is not protocolized, making case reports and discussion helpful to future patients and providers.

Progress in developing therapies for the maintenance of endogenous insulin secretion in, or the prevention of, type 1 diabetes has been hindered by limited animal models, the length and cost of clinical trials, difficulties in identifying individuals who will progress faster to a clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, and heterogeneous clinical responses in intervention trials. Classic placebo-controlled intervention trials often include monotherapies, broad participant populations and extended follow-up periods focused on clinical endpoints. While this approach remains the 'gold standard' of clinical research, efforts are underway to implement new approaches harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning …

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a rare infection that can quickly lead to devastating patient outcomes. Considering the vital importance of surrounding neck structures, rapid control of the infection is essential. Infection is most frequently polymicrobial and occurs in the adult patient in the context of certain medical comorbidities. Complications are typically limited to tissue destruction in the form of necrosis. There are no current reports describing CNF complicated by acute shock in the post-operative pediatric patient. Here, we present a pediatric case of CNF complicated by acute shock following Sistrunk procedure for removal of a supposed thyroglossal duct cyst. …

Chronic Kidney Disease - Mineral Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) is a recognized complication of kidney failure, which can lead to short stature, bone deformity, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, and bone fracture in children. Despite the use of conventional therapies, a subgroup of patients receiving dialysis continues to experience secondary or even tertiary hyperparathyroidism. Cinacalcet, a calcimimetic agent, has been shown to be a promising therapeutic option to control hyperparathyroidism with reasonable safety profiles in adults and older children. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of data and guidance pertaining to its use among the younger children on dialysis, who are often the …

This research investigated a mobile air shower as an alternative to water washing for personnel chemical decontamination in Arctic environments, where traditional methods like disrobing and rinsing are impractical. Interest in Arctic operations has grown with recent U.S. military focus on strategic advancements by Russia and China, yet research on air shower effectiveness for chemical decontamination remains limited. This study examined whether a commercial off-the-shelf air shower could effectively decontaminate methyl salicylate (MES), a surrogate for chemical warfare blister agents, from a manikin outfitted in military cold-weather gear. Researchers used a ppbRAE 3000 photo-ionization detector to measure MES concentrations following …
