A Shield-Bearer’S Tale: Elucidating The Roles Of Estradiol And Choline In Mitigating Chemotherapy-Related Cognitive Impairment, Robert W. Botelho Jr. Jul 2024

A Shield-Bearer’S Tale: Elucidating The Roles Of Estradiol And Choline In Mitigating Chemotherapy-Related Cognitive Impairment, Robert W. Botelho Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chemotherapy-Related Cognitive Impairments (CRCIs) are significant consequences of chemotherapy that affect a substantial portion of breast cancer survivors, potentially persisting long after treatment cessation. This series of studies investigated the neuroprotective roles of estradiol and choline against CRCIs induced by cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin (CYP/DOX), commonly known as Adriamycin/Cytoxan (AC) chemotherapy. Utilizing the MMTV-PyVT mouse model of breast cancer, this body of work spans several experimental studies, the first of which evaluates the impact of dietary choline supplementation on spatial memory and cholinergic function in tumor-bearing mice undergoing chemotherapy. The subsequent study tests whether impaired ovarian function and resulting reductions in …

The Design And Impact Of Interactive Online Modules For Dental Faculty Calibration, Meixun Zheng, Debra Woo, Kim Benton Jul 2024

The Design And Impact Of Interactive Online Modules For Dental Faculty Calibration, Meixun Zheng, Debra Woo, Kim Benton

Pacific Faculty Work

The diverse backgrounds of health professions faculty often result in inconsistent teaching, clinical techniques, and feedback for students. Faculty calibration is essential for uniform, high-quality instruction. However, scheduling training sessions is challenging due to faculty availability. This study introduces a self-paced, interactive online approach to dental faculty calibration. Four self-paced online modules were developed using an interactive cloud-based platform. A variety of learning activities were interspersed throughout the module to promote active learning. A survey captured faculty’s perception of the online format. ANOVA analyses examined differences in perceived effectiveness of the online format between full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty. The …

Impact Of Covid-19 On Dental Students’ Mental Health Status And Perception Of Sars-Cov-2 Vaccine, Man Hung, Nicole Hablitzel, Sharon Su, Samantha Melnitsky, Amir Mohajeri Jul 2024

Impact Of Covid-19 On Dental Students’ Mental Health Status And Perception Of Sars-Cov-2 Vaccine, Man Hung, Nicole Hablitzel, Sharon Su, Samantha Melnitsky, Amir Mohajeri

Pacific Faculty Work

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted dental education significantly, forcing adaptations in both didactic and clinical curricula. This study evaluates the impact of COVID-19 on dental students’ mental health and perceptions of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. An anonymous online survey was administered to dental students at Roseman University of Health Sciences, focusing on health experiences and vaccination perceptions. Results showed 56.8% of students were concerned about their emotional health, 82.1% felt stressed, and 60.6% felt depressed. About 81.9% received the vaccine, with 75.5% believing it effective, though only 55.3% supported mandatory vaccination. The pandemic negatively impacted students’ emotional health, indicating a need for …

Salivary Proteins In Human Acquired Enamel Pellicle (Aep) On Eroded And Uneroded Teeth In Patients With Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (Gord), Rasha Alharthi, Mahdi Mutahar, David Bartlett, Jafar Jafari, Rebecca Moazzez Jul 2024

Salivary Proteins In Human Acquired Enamel Pellicle (Aep) On Eroded And Uneroded Teeth In Patients With Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (Gord), Rasha Alharthi, Mahdi Mutahar, David Bartlett, Jafar Jafari, Rebecca Moazzez

Pacific Faculty Work

The aim of this in vivo study was to compare total protein present in the salivary films (F) and acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) on eroded and non-eroded surfaces in patients suffering from GORD symptoms with and without GORD diagnosis (GORD, No-GORD). Thirty-nine patients suffering from GORD symptoms and erosive tooth wear on lower first molars and an unaffected posterior occlusal surface in the same quadrant were recruited from Guy’s hospital, London. Salivary film and AEP were collected from the eroded and uneroded occlusal surfaces, using 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-soaked filter papers. Total protein concentration was analysed using bicinchoninic acid …

A Retrospective Quantitative Comparison Of Auto-Planning Vs. Manual-Planning For Large Breast Patients, Olivia R. Smiley Jul 2024

A Retrospective Quantitative Comparison Of Auto-Planning Vs. Manual-Planning For Large Breast Patients, Olivia R. Smiley

Masters Projects

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in the United States, with many patients undergoing whole breast irradiation (WBI) following lumpectomy. Dosimetrists face challenges in planning WBI for patients with large breasts due to issues related to hotspots, dose uniformity, and extended planning times. Auto-planning tools like EZFluence, which use artificial intelligence, offer potential improvements in planning efficiency and dose distribution. This retrospective quantitative study compares auto-planning using EZFluence with manual planning for 10 large breast patients, aiming to reduce hotspots, achieve a more homogeneous dose, minimize doses to organs at risk (OARs), reduce monitor units (MUs), and …
