Objective: The management of Pulmonary Atresia and Ventricular Septal Defect (PA/VSD) without Major Aortopulmonary Collaterals (MAPCAs) is variable. This study aims to describe the practice patterns, choice of interventions, and outcomes of patients treated using various surgical strategies. Methods: Data from the Public Health Information System (PHIS) database was analyzed for patients with a diagnosis of PA/VSD without MAPCAs who followed a two-ventricle strategy between 2003 and 2023. Patients were categorized based on the initial surgical approach into four groups: single-stage early repair, ductal stent, systemic to pulmonary artery shunt, and right ventricle to pulmonary artery (RV-PA) connection. Outcomes, including …

Out Of The Cave: Technology And The Importance Of Community To Learning And Mental Health, Richard England Oct 2024

Out Of The Cave: Technology And The Importance Of Community To Learning And Mental Health, Richard England

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

This essay draws upon Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” to examine student use of personal electronic devices and emphasize the value and power of conversation in learning communities. Observing the isolation that often characterizes the five minutes prior to class time, the author considers the psychosocial challenges to building classroom community in a technological age. Literature review provides ample testimony on how emergent technologies contribute to social fragmentation, emotional instability, and pedagogical hurdles. Noting current smartphone bans in K–12 education, the author acknowledges similar challenges to tertiary education, suggesting that individualized “caves” of ubiquitous personal (and highly personalized) technology are …

Honors Is More Than A Grade: Removing The Experiential Ceiling In Honors, Justin L. Rheubert, Marisa Prisco, Paige A. Grum, Abby L. Kalkstein

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The stress created by academic pressure may prevent honors students from exploring curricula beyond that required by their majors. Challenged with additional workload and extracurricular requirements, students in honors often confront added stress caused by a desire to perform favorably in all academic pursuits. This pressure may result in hesitancy to explore new ideas, nurture curiosity, or break free from the rigors of a defined program of study—the opposite of what honors pedagogy and practice purport. This essay presents the process of converting a weighted grading system to pass/fail in an effort to provide students with opportunities for academic exploration …

Charting A Course For Belonging: Creating An Honors Mindfulness Learning Community, Kristy Spear, Gayathry Prabhakaran

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In today’s post-pandemic world, a sense of belonging within and in the larger relational world is something that many people struggle with, particularly those individuals leaving home to enter college. Socially engaged mindfulness can connect individuals with their breath, thoughts, emotions, and one another to promote and support well-being. This essay presents a programmatic overview of a Mindfulness Learning Community (MLC) in honors. Created for incoming first-year students (N = 31) to aid in their transition to college life, the multi-semester academic, social, and experiential-based learning community aims to teach honors students the psychological and physiological value of mindful practice, …

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

This study explores the effect of preexisting mental health issues on college students’ academic performance. Using unique data from the honors college at a medium-sized urban private university, authors examine college entry essays (N = 1,062) in five classes (two pre-pandemic and three post-pandemic), as well as advisors’ (N = 7) notes. Mental health (MH) concerns are grouped into six non-mutually exclusive categories: depression/anxiety, neurodiversity/learning disabilities, identity-related concerns, grief/loss, trauma, and the mental health of others whose lives impact the student. The study finds that the number of honors students citing mental health in their entrance essays more …

The Well-Being Of Honors College Students Compared To Non-Honors College Students Accounting For Prior Gifted Experience, Hannah C. Dewald, Allyson S. Graf

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Student wellness is a growing concern among educators. Previous studies on the well-being of honors students as compared to other undergraduates result in mixed findings. This study examines the trajectory of gifted programming in education and specific challenges to the collegiate experience, presenting differences between honors students (N = 49) and non-honors peers (N = 138) using two well-being indicators (academic anxiety and academic self-efficacy) and three related factors (perceived past school competitiveness, maladaptive perfectionism, and pressure due to labeling). While authors posit that honors students may have higher academic anxiety and lower self-efficacy than those not enrolled …

Common Consumer Residual Insecticides Lack Efficacy Against Insecticide-Susceptible And Resistant Populations Of The German Cockroach (Blattodea: Ectobiidae), Johnalyn Gordon, Marla J. Eva, Sudip Gaire, Arthur G. Appel, Zachary C. Devries

UK CARES Faculty Publications

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae), is a ubiquitous pest in affordable housing. They represent a major threat to human health due to their contribution of asthma-exacerbating allergens and the potential to transfer pathogenic microorganisms indoors. Despite well-documented pyre- throid resistance, pyrethroid-based broadcast residual insecticide products are often used by residents to con- trol cockroaches in their homes. Additionally, there is little empirical independent testing of these products. Thus, it remains unclear how effective these commonly used do-it-yourself products are at controlling German cockroaches. This study represents a comprehensive examination of the efficacy of these products with direct, …

The Impact Of Historical Trauma And Political Conflict On Mental Health In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Case Study Of The Drc And Rwanda, Aurore Shima

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Defined as an individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being, mental health is essential for personal recovery and societal stability, especially in post-conflict settings. In regions like Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where communities have endured extreme political violence, the scars of historical trauma remain deep. While various literature exists on the psychological effects of political conflict, few studies have been conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and the impact of historical trauma on mental health outcomes in this region remains sparse. This research explores the psychological effects of historical trauma stemming from political conflict in Rwanda and the …

The Cultural Dimensions Of Palliative Care: Exploring Barriers To Effective Care Provision In Low And Middle-Income Countries, Kyra Phelan

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

The rising prevalence of chronic illnesses, particularly cancer, and aging populations in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) underscore the urgent need for palliative care. Palliative care (PC) improves the quality of life for patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses by addressing physical, psychological, and spiritual suffering. However, cultural barriers impede its implementation, particularly in LMICs. This paper identifies some of these barriers, including the widely held misconceptions of palliative care, inadequate truth-telling practices, and insufficient attention to patients' diverse spiritual needs. It also highlights systemic obstacles such as limited resources, a lack of trained personnel, and inadequate government prioritization. This …

System, Status, And Setting: Analyzing The Response Of Governmental And Non-Governmental Actors To Asylum Seeker Healthcare Needs The Cases Of Switzerland And Morocco, Sophia Prost

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

As asylum seekers increase worldwide, their medical needs pose a critical global health issue for host countries. Asylum seekers enter host countries such as Switzerland and Morocco with unique healthcare needs that require responses from international governmental organizations (IGOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and governments. These actors navigate challenges within their responses that stem from healthcare systems and policies, legal status, and living conditions, each of which impact the medical needs of asylum seekers. Coordination and cultural competence is known to be important in asylum seeker healthcare, but less is known about the connection between asylum seeker medical issues and the …

Intra-Articular Knee Neurofibroma In A Patient With Neurofibromatosis: A Case Report And Review Of Literature., Thomas Falconiero, Mark Lagreca, Arash Badragheh, Nathan Jones, Christopher Kester

Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder that typically results in Café-au-lait macules and peripheral nerve sheath tumors (i. e, neurofibromas). While peripheral neurofibromas are common, intra-articular knee neurofibromas are rarely described in the literature. To date, there only have been two other case reports noting intra-articular knee neurofibromas. The authors present the case of a patient with NF1 who was found to have an intra-articular knee neurofibroma incidentally discovered during the surgical approach to a retrograde femoral nail.

CASE REPORT: The patient is a 65-year-old female who presented to the emergency room after a fall from …

Neurosteroids For The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder (Mdd) And Chronic Pain (Paper), Meghan Haan Oct 2024

Neurosteroids For The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder (Mdd) And Chronic Pain (Paper), Meghan Haan

Honors Capstone Projects

Neurosteroids are endogenous steroids within the brain that act as modulators in neurotransmission. Among their targets are the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which are responsible for inhibitory signaling in the brain. The interaction between neurosteroids and GABA receptors is complex, influencing mood regulation and pain perception. Endogenous neurosteroids have been used in conditions such as postpartum depression (PPD), where fluctuation in neurosteroid levels contribute to the onset of depressive systems. Conversely, exogenous neurosteroids, such as brexanolone and zuranolone, have emerged as therapeutic agents for PPD. These compounds act as positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) on GABA receptors, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission and …

The Impact Of Client Education Videos On Stroke Rehabilitation: An Educational Video Series, Sydney Ellis, Lesley Khan-Farooqi Phd, Otd, Otr

Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

Stroke is one of the leading causes of severe disability and death in the United States. During the initial stage of recovery, clients receive stroke education to learn about what their new reality looks like after discharge; however, many clients feel that the education provided, although appreciated, was not inclusive to all individuals and only occurred one time. This led to difficulties in knowledge retention and acquisition. Although there is a plethora of educational resources available there seems to be a lack of carryover and understanding of information obtained from these resources, this leaves the client wondering how they can …

Cardiovascular Biomarkers Using Deep Learning And Retinal Imaging For The Assessment Of Systemic Disease, Ivan Coronado Oct 2024

Cardiovascular Biomarkers Using Deep Learning And Retinal Imaging For The Assessment Of Systemic Disease, Ivan Coronado

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Fundus photography is a radiation-free, non-invasive imaging modality widely employed to assess both ocular and systemic diseases in population-level applications. Traditional methods for extracting cardiovascular biomarkers rely on quantifying vascular features in these images to identify indicators of disease. However, these approaches often depend on manual clinical expertise, which can be costly and time-consuming, making them impractical for large-scale datasets. Deep learning offers a compelling alternative to traditional techniques by enabling the automated processing of extensive datasets with high accuracy. Despite its advantages, deep learning models often function as "black boxes," making it challenging to interpret the features they prioritize …

Global, Regional, And National Burden Of Stroke And Its Risk Factors, 1990–2021: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2021, Gbd 2021 Stroke Risk Factor Collaborators

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Background

Up-to-date estimates of stroke burden and attributable risks and their trends at global, regional, and national levels are essential for evidence-based health care, prevention, and resource allocation planning. We aimed to provide such estimates for the period 1990–2021.

Methods

We estimated incidence, prevalence, death, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) counts and age-standardised rates per 100 000 people per year for overall stroke, ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, and subarachnoid haemorrhage, for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. We also calculated burden of stroke attributable to 23 risk factors and six risk clusters (air pollution, tobacco smoking, behavioural, dietary, environmental, …
