The chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) derived from the CD30 specific murine antibody, HRS-3, has produced promising clinical efficacy with a favorable safety profile in the treatment of relapsed or refractory CD30-positive lymphomas. However, persistence of the autologous CAR-T cells was brief, and many patients relapsed a year after treatment. The lack of persistence may be attributed to the use of a wild-type immunoglobulin (Ig)G1 spacer that can associate with Fc receptors. We first identified the cysteine-rich domain (CRD) 5 of CD30 as the primary binding epitope of HRS-3 and armed with this insight, attempted to improve the HRS-3 CAR functionality …

UNLABELLED:

HIGHLIGHTS: Direct and indirect costs have a wide-ranging impact on the material, behavioral, and psychosocial aspects of financial well-being of Black prostate cancer survivors and their caregivers. These results emphasize the need for sharing cost information to support medical decision making.Future research should focus on the design of cost-sharing interventions that target the complexities of direct and indirect costs collectively, rather than separately.

A Model For Developing Emergency Medical Services Instructor Knowledge, David Hall, Lisa Fee

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South

PROBLEM: The task of educating Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers requires EMS instructors to possess and convey translational knowledge and skills relevant to out-of-hospital emergency care. Insufficiently prepared or new EMS instructors may lack translational knowledge and skills along these lines and be at a deficit when it comes to educating EMS providers. PURPOSE: The project involved creation, implementation, and analysis of a model state EMS instructor core training program in Mississippi, with the aim of developing translational knowledge and skills for use by EMS instructors. METHOD: The project utilized a revised Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) model and a standardized survey …

Ethical Requirements For Achieving Fairness In Radiology Machine Learning: An Intersectionality And Social Embeddedness Approach, Dessislava S. Fessenko Oct 2024

Ethical Requirements For Achieving Fairness In Radiology Machine Learning: An Intersectionality And Social Embeddedness Approach, Dessislava S. Fessenko

Journal of Health Ethics

Radiodiagnostics by machine-learning (ML) systems is often perceived as objective and fair. It may, however, exhibit bias towards certain patient sub-groups. The typical reasons for this are the selection of disease features for ML systems to screen, that ML systems learn from human clinical judgements, which are often biased, and that fairness in ML is often inappropriately conceptualized as “equality”. ML systems with such parameters fail to accurately diagnose and address patients’ actual health needs and how they depend on patients’ social identities (i.e. intersectionality) and broader social conditions (i.e. embeddedness). This paper explores the ethical obligations to ensure fairness …

Steatotic Mass Secondary To Heterozygous Hemochromatosis, A Rare Case Of Biliary Obstruction, Saddam Zaidi Md, Cheng-Hung Tai, Joanna Gibson Md, Phd, Caroline Loeser

Posters

Heterozygous Hemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disorder that increases iron absorption. Carriers of the C282Y HFE gene mutation have a higher risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Research indicates a significant association between liver fat accumulation (steatosis) and fibrosis in HH. This case involves a 31-year-old male with HH and an uncommon biliary obstruction caused by focal fat infiltration.

Amyloidosis is a rare systemic infiltrative disease, with a prevalence estimated to be 6-10 cases per million person-years. It involves the extracellular deposition of beta-sheet fibrillar protein and can manifest in any organ system in the body. Diagnosis of gastrointestinal involvement of amyloidosis can be difficult, given its nonspecific symptoms including abdominal pain, nausea, dysphagia, and diarrhea.

Left ventricular thrombus (LVT) has been associated with an increased risk of cardioembolic stroke. However, it has not been established if coronary angiography (CAG) or percutaneous intervention (PCI) would enhance that risk. This study aims to determine the risk of cardioembolic stroke among patients with LVT who underwent CAG or PCI.

Investigating Dual Task Balance Exercises: Quantifying Practice Patterns And Understanding Decision-Making Among Physical Therapists, Amelia Sabin, Wes Spagnuolo, Narissa Libby, Kylie Berry

Research Report Posters

Dual-task exercise has been shown to be an effective intervention to improve patient functional outcomes and decrease falls. However, little is known about whether physical therapists are prescribing dual task exercises during their sessions, or at what intensity. The objective of this research was to analyze differences and similarities of observed balance exercise practice patterns and reported practice and decision-making among physical therapists. We analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data from two separate studies and extracted data regarding dual-task balance exercises. Our analysis found that therapists rarely perform, describe, or report thinking about dual-task balance exercises in their physical therapy …

College of Communication & Creative Arts Departmental Research

Background

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the sale and marketing of two very low nicotine cigarettes (VLNC) as modified risk tobacco products. The misperception that VLNC are healthier than regular cigarettes is common. This study explores effective message strategies to inform the public about health risks associated with VLNC use, encourage cigarette smokers to try VLNC, and prevent other tobacco users and non-users from product initiation.

Methods

Following the Reasoned Action approach, a VLNC educational message was developed based on the salient beliefs associated with behavioral intention. The message was tested in an online survey conducted in 2018, …

Thyrotoxicosis is a systemic condition caused by the effects of elevated levels of thyroid hormones. The cardiovascular manifestations of thyrotoxicosis range from sinus tachycardia and atrial fibrillation to heart failure. The incidence of malignant arrhythmias and cardiac arrest associated with thyrotoxicosis is not well known, and much of the current literature regarding this is limited to case reports. This study conducts a systematic review of the literature to identify patient demographics and outcomes where thyrotoxicosis manifests as cardiac arrest.

Alcohol-associated hepatitis (AAH) is a severe liver condition often necessitating hospitalization and has a one-year mortality of 40%. The increasing prevalence of obesity has led to a rise in bariatric surgery (BS), which can alter the outcomes of various comorbid conditions. There are some concerns about possible increased risk and severity of alcohol related disorders in patients with a history of BS due to alteration in alcohol metabolism after surgery.
