Nys Workers' Compensation & No-Fault Cases: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, John Sorrentino D.M.D.
The New York State Dental Journal
Agreeing to do a workers' compensation or no-fault case can be a great practice builder and have a powerful and positive impact on the lives of people who have been devastated by a workplace or automobile accident. Yet, many practitioners hesitate or refuse to do these kinds of cases for a variety of reasons. Often, you are dealing with insurance companies that are unfamiliar with dental claims. Perhaps because these claims don’t crop up often, you are not familiar with the process, or you have heard stories of poor, or even no reimbursement.

We present a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of a neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase type 3 (NTRK3) soft tissue sarcoma (STS), arising from the occipitalis muscle. NTRK3 is a mutation only recently described in STS using next-generation sequencing and is rarely implicated in STS.Currently, there is limited literature to guide care. This case demonstrates a successful treatment option utilizing a multidisciplinary team and unique reconstruction with a hair-bearing scalp. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report showing an NTRK3 mutation STS arising from the occipitalis muscle. The utilization of staged hair-bearing tissue expansion post-wide R0 …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common acute leukemia in adults. While induction chemotherapy leads to remission in most patients, a significant number will experience relapse. Therefore, there is a need for novel therapies that can improve remission rates in patients with relapsed and refractory AML. CD70 is the natural ligand for CD27 (a member of the TNF superfamily) and appears to be a promising therapeutic target. Consequently, there is considerable interest in developing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy products that can specifically target CD70 in various neoplasms, including AML. In this study, we employed routine diagnostic techniques, …

Background: Despite advances in screening and therapy, breast cancer (BC) remains the predominant cancer in women globally. Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) is pivotal in carcinogenesis across various cancers, including BC. Evidence indicates that miR-1307-3p is upregulated in BC tumors, yet its target genes are not fully elucidated. This study aimed to explore how miR-1307-3p regulates BC proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis and to identify potential target genes.
Methods: Basal miR-1307-3p levels were quantified in BC cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, as well as MCF-10A using quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-qPCR). The impact of miR-1307-3p inhibition on BC cell proliferation, migration, …

fMRI neurofeedback using autobiographical memory recall to upregulate the amygdala is associated with resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) changes between the amygdala and the salience and default mode networks (SN and DMN, respectively). We hypothesize the existence of anatomical circuits underlying these rsFC changes. Using a cross-species brain parcellation, we identified in non-human primates locations homologous to the regions of interest (ROIs) from studies showing pre-to-post-neurofeedback changes in rsFC with the left amygdala. We injected bidirectional tracers in the basolateral, lateral, and central amygdala nuclei of adult macaques and used bright- and dark-field microscopy to identify cells and axon terminals in …

Impact Of Participation In Cardiac Rehabilitation Post Myocardial-Infarction: An Integrative Review, Zoie Maynard, Mallory Stinson
Impact Of Participation In Cardiac Rehabilitation Post Myocardial-Infarction: An Integrative Review, Zoie Maynard, Mallory Stinson
Master's Projects
As one of the most common causes of hospitalization, the prevalence of myocardial infarction is indisputable Since this condition is so ubiquitous, a treatment protocol is initiated with methods to help patients modify their lifestyle, treat their underlying disease process, educate them to prevent reoccurrence, and improve their healthcare outcomes. This protocol relies heavily on the use of cardiac rehabilitation. Despite the implementation of this treatment protocol, the concern for recurrence and rehospitalization remains. The goal of this integrative review is to determine how participation in cardiac rehabilitation post-myocardial infarction impacts healthcare outcomes including rates of rehospitalization and depression. The …

Tsetse flies are vectors of the parasite trypanosoma that cause the neglected tropical diseases human and animal African trypanosomosis. Semiochemicals play important roles in the biology and ecology of tsetse flies. Previous reviews have focused on olfactory-based attractants of tsetse flies. Here, we present an overview of the identification of repellents and their development into control tools for tsetse flies. Both natural and synthetic repellents have been successfully tested in laboratory and field assays against specific tsetse fly species. Thus, these repellents presented as innovative mobile tools offer opportunities for their use in integrated disease management strategies.

The ability of ticks to interact and adapt to differentecologies and hosts determines their vectorial competence for various pathogens; however, ticks-livestock-pathogens interaction studies are limited. With our ticks-hosts-pathogens interface studies, we found 14 species of hard ticks feeding on various livestock. Ticks showed a strong preference for one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius). The camel nostril was the most preferred predilection site. The most prevalent tick species on camels was Hyalomma rufipes. We found two novel Amblyomma gemma variants which are distinct both morphologically and genetically from previously described Amblyomma gemma. The signature odors from camel breath and body were attractive to …

Brain connectivity arises from interactions across biophysical scales, ranging from molecular to cellular to anatomical to network level. To date, there has been little progress toward integrated analysis across these scales. To bridge this gap, from a unique cohort of 98 individuals, we collected antemortem neuroimaging and genetic data, as well as postmortem dendritic spine morphometric, proteomic and gene expression data from the superior frontal and inferior temporal gyri. Through the integration of the molecular and dendritic spine morphology data, we identified hundreds of proteins that explain interindividual differences in functional connectivity and structural covariation. These proteins are enriched for …

Background and purpose: Although the amphiphilic nature of the widely used antithrombotic drug Ticagrelor is well known, it was never considered as a membranotropic agent capable of interacting with the lipid bilayer in a receptor-independent way. In this study, we investigated the influence of Ticagrelor on plasma membrane lipid order in platelets and if this modulates the potency of Ticagrelor at the P2Y12 receptor.
Experimental approach: We combined fluorescent in situ, in vitro and in silico approaches to probe the interactions between the plasma membrane of platelets and Ticagrelor. The influence of Ticagrelor on the lipid order of the platelet …

Imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosing and forecasting treatment outcomes in axial spondyloarthritis. Conventional radiography may overlook patients in the initial stages of the disease, while MRI is sensitive in identifying inflammation early on. Computed tomography reliably detects structural abnormalities. Practicing rheumatologists must possess a fundamental understanding of interpreting both active inflammatory and structural lesions in axial spondyloarthritis.

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in trauma patients, despite chemoprophylaxis. Statins have been shown capable of acting upon the endothelium. We hypothesized that statin therapy in the pre- or in-hospital settings leads to a decreased incidence of VTE.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of injured patients who received statin therapy pre- or in-hospital. Adult, highest-level trauma activation patients admitted from January 2018 to June 2022 were included. Patients on prehospital anticoagulants, had history of inherited bleeding disorder, and who died within the first 24 hours were excluded. Statin users were matched …

Long-duration spaceflight is associated with pathophysiological changes in the intracranial compartment hypothetically linked to microgravity-induced headward fluid shift. This study aimed to determine whether daily artificial gravity (AG) sessions can mitigate these effects, supporting its application as a countermeasure to spaceflight. Twenty-four healthy adult volunteers (16 men) were exposed to 60 days of 6° head-down tilt bed rest (HDTBR) as a ground-based analog of chronic headward fluid shift. Subjects were divided equally into three groups: no AG (control), daily 30-min intermittent AG (iAG), and daily 30-min continuous (cAG). Internal carotid artery (ICA) stroke volume (ICASV), ICA resistive index (ICARI), ICA …

Conjugative dissemination of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) among bacteria is initiated by assembly of the relaxosome at the MGE’s origin-of-transfer (oriT) sequence. A critical but poorly defined step of relaxosome assembly involves recruitment of the catalytic relaxase to its DNA strand-specific nicking site within oriT. Here, we present evidence by AlphaFold modeling, affinity pulldowns, and in vivo site-directed photocrosslinking that the TraK Ribbon-Helix-Helix DNA-binding protein recruits TraI to oriT through a dynamic interaction in which TraI’s C-terminal unstructured domain (TraICTD) wraps around TraK’s C-proximal tetramerization domain. Upon relaxosome assembly, conformational changes disrupt this contact, and TraICTD instead …

Background: Acute ischemic stroke arising from medium vessel occlusions (MeVO) poses substantial challenges in treatment and management. This study aims to elucidate the outcomes and factors contributing to achieving excellent recanalization (modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction [mTICI] 2c-3) versus successful recanalization (mTICI 2b) in patients with MeVO stroke undergoing mechanical thrombectomy (MT).
Methods: We conducted a multinational study analyzing data from the MAD-MT (Multicenter Analysis of Distal Medium Vessel Occlusions: Effect of Mechanical Thrombectomy) registry, encompassing 37 centers across North America, Asia, and Europe, collected between September 2017 and July 2023. The study included acute ischemic stroke patients with MeVO …

The Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) project is the largest study of adolescent brain development. ABCD longitudinally tracks 11,868 participants aged 9-10 years from 21 sites using standardized protocols for multi-site MRI data collection and analysis. While the multi-site and multi-scanner study design enhances the robustness and generalizability of analysis results, it may also introduce nonbiological variances including scanner-related variations, subject motion, and deviations from protocols. ABCD imaging data were collected biennially within a period of ongoing maturation in cortical thickness and integrity of cerebral white matter. These changes can bias the classical test-retest methodologies, such as intraclass correlation …

The gastrointestinal tract is a multi-organ system crucial for efficient nutrient uptake and barrier immunity. Advances in genomics and a surge in gastrointestinal diseases1,2 has fuelled efforts to catalogue cells constituting gastrointestinal tissues in health and disease3. Here we present systematic integration of 25 single-cell RNA sequencing datasets spanning the entire healthy gastrointestinal tract in development and in adulthood. We uniformly processed 385 samples from 189 healthy controls using a newly developed automated quality control approach (scAutoQC), leading to a healthy reference atlas with approximately 1.1 million cells and 136 fine-grained cell states. We anchor 12 gastrointestinal disease datasets spanning …
