Utilizing Prams To Examine Wic And Non-Wic Participants' Smoking Prevalences In Louisiana, Almetra Granger, Tyra Gross, Ty-Runet Bryant, Amy Thierry, Michael D. Celestin Jr.
Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association
Background: Cigarette and electronic cigarette use before, during, or after pregnancy increases the chances of severe health risks for both the mother and child. Quitting leads to significantly better health outcomes. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinics serve large numbers of pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, offering an excellent opportunity to address tobacco cessation. But few studies assess tobacco use, particularly electronic cigarette use, among WIC participants. This study examined the relationship between WIC status and maternal tobacco use. Methods: We analyzed WIC (n=315) and non-WIC (n=152) participants smoking data from the 2016-2018 Phase 8 Louisiana Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring …

No-Self, No Problem: A Buddhist Approach To Self-Concept Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Adam Brandt, Laura Smestad
Journal of Faith Integration Counseling (JFIC)
While exposure and response prevention is an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder, it may not fully address the psycho-spiritual concerns of clients whose obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms threaten and leave them in distress about their self-concept. This article addresses this problem by introducing the term self-concept obsessive-compulsive disorder and offering Buddhist psychology, a theoretical orientation based on the Buddhist principles of nonjudgment, mindfulness, and no-self as a useful framework to couple with traditional obsessive-compulsive disorder treatment.

Anti-Egfr Aptamer Exhibits Direct Anti-Cancer Effects In Nsclc Cells Harboring Egfr L858r Mutations, Brian J. Thomas, Sania Z. Awan, Trupti Joshi, Mark A. Daniels, David Porciani, Donald H. Burke
Biomedical Sciences
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Activating mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain of the oncogene epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are responsible for ~10–50% of all LUAD cases. Although tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been effective in prolonging patient survival and quality of life, acquired resistance and disease progression are inevitable, presenting a clear unmet need for alternative or adjuvant therapeutics. Here we show that an anti-EGFR aptamer (EGFRapt) decreases viability and tumor growth of LUAD cell lines harboring the L858R ± T790M mutation in EGFR. Additionally, we elucidate …

In mice, the fetal brain is dependent upon the placenta for factors that guide its early development. This linkage between the two organs has given rise to the term, the placenta–brain axis. A similar interrelationship between the two organs may exist in humans. We hypothesize that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from placental trophoblast (TB) cells transport small RNA and other informational biomolecules from the placenta to the brain where their contents have pleiotropic effects. Here, EVs were isolated from the medium in which human trophoblasts (TBs) had been differentiated in vitro from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and from cultured …

Preventing Migration Of Esophageal Silicone Covered Self-Expanding Metal Stent Using Dental Floss In A Pediatric Patient, Sofia Colon Guzman, Nadia Ibrahimi, Amornluck Krasaelap
Presentations
Temporary esophageal stents are an important and effective treatment for benign esophageal strictures, such as those caused by caustic ingestions. Fully covered self-expanding metal stents (FCSEMS) provide the benefit of continuous dilation pressure over longer periods of time compared to bougie or balloon dilation. However, stent migration is the most common complication and can be observed in up to 40% of patients, especially with FCSEMS and in refractory strictures. Typically, the stent is secured by using clips or suturing devices. However, we present a case where traditional methods of securing a stent were not possible due to the location of …

Impact Of Gut Microbiota And Its Metabolites On Immunometabolism In Colorectal Cancer, Madison Flory, Paloma Bravo, Asfaqul Alam
Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is highly prevalent, accounting for approximately one-tenth of cancer cases and deaths globally. It stands as the second most deadly and third most common cancer type. Although the gut microbiota has been implicated in CRC carcinogenesis for the last several decades, it remains one of the least understood risk factors for CRC development, as the gut microbiota is highly diverse and variable. Many studies have uncovered unique microbial signatures in CRC patients compared with healthy matched controls, with variations dependent on patient age, disease stage, and location. In addition, mechanistic studies revealed that tumor-associated bacteria produce diverse …

Exploring Body Composition And Sexual Behavior In South Texas College Students, Soyoung Kwon, Shannon Shen
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
In this exploratory study, we examined the understudied relationship between body composition and sexual behavior among freshmen college students, addressing a gap in empirical research. Our sample consisted of 217 nonclinical college students recruited from a university in the southwestern United States; a majority of the students were Hispanic (70%) and freshmen (95%). Using multivariate logistic regression, we explored associations of body mass index, body fat percentage, and fat mass index with sexual behaviors. More than half of the participants were either overweight (22.5%) or obese (30.4%), and nearly 70% fell outside the healthy range of body fat. Results showed …

A Unilateral Myopic Shift Secondary To Sturge-Weber Syndrome Results In Refractive Amblyopia Of The Fellow Eye In A Pediatric Patient, Mckenzie Stewart, Christina Twardowski
Posters
A 4-year-old patient with unilateral glaucoma secondary to Sturge-Weber Syndrome causes a myopic shift. The fellow healthy eye maintains high hyperopia resulting in anisometropic refractive amblyopia, requiring occlusion therapy. It is well documented that a glaucomatous high IOP causes an expansion of the globe due to excessive plasticity of collagen fibers in pediatric eyes. The elongated axial length induces myopic shifts. In this patient, the myopic shift in her glaucomatous eye resulted in a unilateral high hyperopic refractive error in the fellow eye with normal ocular health. This anisometropia is enough to cause amblyopia in the hyperopic eye. In past …

Background: Terminal ileum (TI) intubation is integral to complete diagnostic ileocolonoscopy in children. It is necessary to determine terminal ileal involvement in patients with a broad spectrum of pathologic processes. In some cases the standard method of intubation does not lead to success and retroflexion is needed. Here we describe the case of terminal ileal intubation in retroflexion on a 14 year old female. Case description: 14 year-old female patient with a past medical history of chronic abdominal pain, NAFLD, anxiety, vulvovaginitis, lichen sclerosus, depression, constipation, delayed menses, and GERD who was admitted for 2 weeks of escalating symptoms and …

IgA Vasculitis is a commonly seen presentation in the pediatric population. The constellation of symptoms typically includes purpuric rash, joint pain, abdominal pain and hematuria. This 12 year old female was seen by her pediatrician for rash on her legs, shortness of breath, cough and night sweats that all started around 2 months ago. Additionally, a 25 pound weight loss was noted over the past year. The rash appeared as nonblanching purpura on her lower extremities, lending suspicion to IgA Vasculitis. She was first treated for UTI with cefuroxime, and then treated with steroids. Urinalysis showed persistent hematuria and she …

Deoxycholic Acid Injections As A Nonsurgical Treatment For Lipomas In Adiposis Dolorosa (Dercum Disease), Zvi Schwartz, Kayla Brockmeyer, Neda Nikbakht
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Adiposis dolorosa (Dercum disease) is a rare condition characterized by diffuse and recurring painful lipomas on the trunk and extremities. Patients are typically middle-aged females with an elevated BMI presenting with chronic pain. Physical examination reveals soft subcutaneous nodules and masses, tender to palpation. The associated pain significantly impacts quality of life and requires therapeutic intervention. The most common treatment option is surgical excision. Alternative options should be considered for patients with numerous lipomas where surgical management is not practical or is not desired. Deoxycholic acid injections are a viable alternative non-surgical technique. We present a case of a 55-year-old …

Drug-Induced Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematous From Cenobamate: Case Presentation And Review Of The Literature, Safiyyah Bhatti, Daniel Joffe, Timothy Webster, Jason Lee, Neda Nikbakht
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
A 68-year-old woman with a history of seizures on cenobamate presented with an itchy rash all over her body. The rash started about one month prior to her presentation to the dermatology clinic. The rash was initially treated with topical triamcinolone with improvement at one-month follow-up. However, four months later the rash flared and there was concern that cenobamate was the cause. Biopsy was performed showing vacuolar interface dermatitis with atrophy, suggestive of subacute lupus erythematosus. Blood work revealed positive antinuclear antibody, anti-ribonucleoprotein antibody, Sjogren Anti-SS-A and positive histone antibody. Given the worsening rash, positive labs, and cenobamate as the …

Contactless And Scalable Approaches For Human Health And Performance Sensing, Ngoc Doan Thu Tran
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Human health and performance sensing has been extensively studied, from physiology to mental health and movement analytics. However, typical approaches rely on invasive and contact sensors or require professional practitioners, limiting their scalability. For example, the gold standard for measuring heart rate is through an electrocardiogram (ECG), which requires multiple probes attached to the skin and is impractical for individuals with skin issues. Additionally, it typically needs to be performed in a hospital setting under the supervision of a trained cardiac physiologist. Depression detection often relies on the expertise of psychologists or psychiatrists. However, there is a shortage of these …

Experiencing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may impact personal opinions, attitudes, and judgments, which can further result in HIV-related stigma. HIV-related stigma consequentially may impact HIV preventive measures such as HIV testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake, and condom use. The extent to which ACEs influence HIV-related stigma perception has not been well studied. Therefore, the study aimed to examine the association between ACEs and perceived and interpersonal HIV-related stigma among Tanzanian HIV-negative men. Quantitative survey data were obtained from the Tanzania STEP (Self-Testing Education and Promotion) project established in four wards: Mabibo, Manzese, Tandale, and Mwanyanamala. A total of 507 men responded …

The New Professional: Starting A Practice Vs. Buying: What’S Right For You?, Amrita Patel Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This month's New Professional column explores the key decision of whether to start a new dental practice or purchase an existing one. Starting a practice offers flexibility in creating a brand and using the latest technology but requires building a patient base from scratch and managing upfront costs. Purchasing an existing practice provides immediate cash flow and an established patient base but requires more upfront investment and adapting to existing systems. Dentists should consider financial readiness, long-term goals, and work-life balance when making this decision.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Recent guidelines from the AAOMR and ADA recommend discontinuing the routine use of lead aprons and thyroid collars during dental imaging, citing negligible radiation exposure from modern technologies and the ineffectiveness of these shields against internal scatter radiation. Despite strong evidence, Michigan clinicians may face challenges in adopting this change due to patient concerns and outdated regulations.
This article offers practical guidance for transitioning to these updated standards, emphasizing the importance of patient communication and education while highlighting Michigan's current regulatory framework.

INTRODUCTION: Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a rare congenital tumour. The risk of malignancy and recurrence are not well defined. Previous studies are small and report differing conclusions about the timing of surgery and the duration of follow-up. We studied the risk of malignant transformation and SCT recurrence after surgery to address these gaps.
METHODS: This was a global retrospective cohort study. Data of consecutive SCT patients was obtained from 145 institutes in 62 countries. Malignant transformation, defined as malignancy at initial resection, malignant recurrence or death due to malignancy, and its risk factors were analysed.
RESULTS: Of the 3612 included …
