PURPOSE: Psychological distress, including anxiety and depression, is common among adults with CF, associating with poor quality of life, lung function, and healthcare utilization. This 3-year, multi-site, telehealth-delivered randomized trial sought to determine whether Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT with CF) is superior to supportive psychotherapy (SP), in improving psychological functioning for adults with CF.
METHODS: One hundred twenty-four adults with CF and elevated anxiety and/or depressive symptoms were recruited coincident with the first COVID lockdown, from Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, University of Virginia, Augusta University, Duke University Medical Center, and social media. Participants were randomized to 6 weeks of …

Introduction
Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is associated with improved outcomes in select populations, however, crisis resource management (CRM) in this setting is logistically challenging. This study evaluates the impact of ECPR simulation on self-perceived confidence and collaboration of intensive care unit team members.
Methods
This is a prospective observational study analyzing data obtained between July 2018–December 2019. This study focused on non-surgical members of critical care team consisting of pediatric intensivists, resident physicians, registered nurses, respiratory therapists. Participants were expected to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) during the ECPR event, participate in code-team responsibilities and provide ancillary support during cannulation. Pre- …
Disparities In Cognitive Decline Along The Texas-Mexico Border: Insights From The 2021 Brfss, Bianca D. Valenzuela
Disparities In Cognitive Decline Along The Texas-Mexico Border: Insights From The 2021 Brfss, Bianca D. Valenzuela
Health and Kinesiology Theses
The aging global population has brought increased attention to cognitive health and early detection of cognitive decline. Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD), defined as self-reported memory or thinking problems, is an early marker of neurodegenerative diseases. Despite growing research, gaps remain in understanding how geographic disparities influence SCD prevalence and contributing factors. The Texas-Mexico border region, predominantly Hispanic and facing unique socioeconomic and health care challenges, offers a unique context to explore these influences. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of SCD and related functional limitations in Texas-Mexico border counties versus non-border counties, using 2021 Behavioral Risk …

This study assesses the associations between nutritional statusand cognitive development of schoolchildren. A unit increase inheight-for-age Z-score was associated with 0.12 SD, 0.08 SD and0.12 SD increase in standardized digit span, Raven’s coloredprogressive metrics, and performance index of visual searchtask, respectively. A unit increase in body-mass-index-for-ageZ-score was associated with 0.11 SD increase in standardizeddigit span. Hemoglobin concentration was not associated withany of the cognitive outcomes. Chronic malnutrition was asso-ciated with cognitive development in schoolchildren while thin-ness and hemoglobin concentrations were associated withselected or no cognitive outcomes, respectively.

Disruption of genes within the HNRNP gene family has been observed in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. The HNRNP-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (HNRNP-RNDDs), while each unique, have been recently described with similar clinical and molecular features across variation in several genes. However, the phenotypic information on these patients is still lacking. In this case series we aim to describe the phenotypes that are associated with SYNCRIP-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (SYNCRIP-RNDD). We describe in depth ten novel individuals and one previously published individual with mostly de novo and predicted damaging variants in SYNCRIP, consistent with a diagnosis of SYNCRIP-RNDD. We also describe previously published …

The Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) and Individual Water Insecurity Experiences (IWISE) Scales are globally suitable tools for comparably measuring water insecurity experiences among households and adults, respectively. The potential range for HWISE and IWISE scores is 0–36. When the WISE Scales were first published, scores of 12 and higher were considered indicative of water insecurity, but additional cut-points are needed to provide more nuanced insights. We therefore sought to develop a practical set of cut-points for the WISE Scales using HWISE data from 13 sites across 12 countries (n = 3,293) and nationally representative samples of IWISE data …

Acute Kidney Injury Associated With Anticancer Therapies: Small Molecules And Targeted Therapies, Jaya Kala, Teresa Joseph, Marta Pirovano, Roberta Fenoglio, Laura Cosmai
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Molecular targeted therapy has revolutionized cancer treatment by significantly improving patient survival compared with standard conventional chemotherapies. The use of these drugs targets specific molecules or targets, which block growth and spread of cancer cells. Many of these therapies have been approved for use with remarkable success in breast, blood, colorectal, lung, and ovarian cancers. The advantage over conventional chemotherapy is its ability to deliver drugs effectively with high specificity while being less toxic. Although known as "targeted," many of these agents lack specificity and selectivity, and they tend to inhibit multiple targets, including those in the kidneys. The side …

PURPOSE: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) and urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB) share histomorphological and therapeutic features but distinct epidemiologic and clinicopathologic characteristics. We examined alterations of chromatin regulatory genes in molecular subtypes, clonal relatedness, and T-cell receptor (TCR) diversity in UTUC and UCB.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Targeted next-generation sequencing or whole-exome DNA sequencing and TCR sequencing were conducted with 34 UTUC and 49 UCB specimens from 63 patients. Tumors were subtyped based on the expression of CK5 and GATA3. Results of tissue microarray of 78 muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) samples were used as prognostic factors of different subtypes …

Background:
Many nurses join the profession because they have altruistic intentions, but some nurses experience barriers to acting on altruistic intentions which may be a source of job dissatisfaction or burnout.
Objective:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate construct validity, internal consistency, and convergence reliability of the Nursing Altruistic Execution Scale (NAES), a novel instrument assessing the perceived ability to help others through work.
Methods:
The NAES was developed based upon a literature review examining altruistic behavior as a motivator for nursing work, with expert feedback for instrument refinement. Participants completed the NAES, Copenhagen Burnout Inventory Work-Related Burnout …

Differences in amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer pharmacokinetics and binding properties lead to discrepancies in amyloid-β uptake estimates. Harmonization of tracer-specific biases is crucial for optimal performance of downstream tasks. Here, we investigated the efficacy of ComBat, a data-driven harmonization model, for reducing tracer-specific biases in regional amyloid PET measurements from [

Many psychiatric conditions have their roots in early development. Individual differences in prenatal brain function (which is influenced by a combination of genetic risk and the prenatal environment) likely interact with individual differences in postnatal experience, resulting in substantial variation in brain functional organization and development in infancy. Neuroimaging has been a powerful tool for understanding typical and atypical brain function and holds promise for uncovering the neurodevelopmental basis of psychiatric illness; however, its clinical utility has been relatively limited thus far. A substantial challenge in this endeavor is the traditional approach of averaging brain data across groups despite individuals …
