Impact Of State Abortion Policies On Family Medicine Practice And Training After Dobbs V Jackson Women’S Health Organization, Karen L. Roper, Sarah Jane Robbins, Philip Day, Grace Shih, Neelima Kale
UK CARES Faculty Publications
PURPOSE The Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization (Dobbs) Supreme Court decision revoked the constitutional right to abortion. Now, restrictive state abortion laws may con- tribute to the shortage and strain already felt in primary care practice, especially related to the provision of reproductive health care. The purpose of this study is to evaluate perceived impacts of state abortion legislation on family medicine clinicians’ practice and medical edu- cation regarding reproductive health care.
METHODS Ten questions were added to the 2022 Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance general membership survey to evaluate impact on relevant themes in reproductive …

Enhancing Nurse Confidence And Efficiency In Chest Tube Management: Implementation Of A Structured Troubleshooting Checklist, Ashley Kever Bsn, Rn, Cmsrn
Nursing Publications, Posters, & Presentations
Presented at the 2024 Nursing Research Symposium
Background: Chest tube management is critical in pulmonary care, yet challenges arise with unexpected events such as air leaks, dislodgement, failed clamping trials, and tubing disconnections. Concerns raised by the Pulmonology team highlighted nurses' uncertainties and the frequent need for guidance during these events. This prompted the development of a troubleshooting checklist aimed at providing clear, step-by-step instructions for managing these scenarios. By following structured checklists, nurses can reduce the risk of errors, ensure adherence to best practices, and enhance patient safety. Objectives/Purpose: The primary aim of this quality improvement project was to …

Viral Genome Delivery Across Bacterial Cell Surfaces, Stephano M. Iglesias, Fenglin Li, Federica Briani, Gino Cingolani
Viral Genome Delivery Across Bacterial Cell Surfaces, Stephano M. Iglesias, Fenglin Li, Federica Briani, Gino Cingolani
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
In 1952, Hershey and Chase used bacteriophage T2 genome delivery inside Escherichia coli to demonstrate that DNA, not protein, is the genetic material. Over 70 years later, our understanding of bacteriophage structure has grown dramatically, mainly thanks to the cryogenic electron microscopy revolution. In stark contrast, phage genome delivery in prokaryotes remains poorly understood, mainly due to the inherent challenge of studying such a transient and complex process. Here, we review the current literature on viral genome delivery across bacterial cell surfaces. We focus on icosahedral bacterial viruses that we arbitrarily sort into three groups based on the presence and …

Harmful Or Helpful? A Content Analysis Of Online ‘Yoga For Low Back Pain’ Videos, Travis Pollen, Jenni Rawlings, Lindsey Burns, Dylan Lloyd, Natalie Pifer, Sheri Silfies
Department of Exercise Science Posters
INTRODUCTION
- Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions worldwide (Walker, 2000).
- To self-manage LBP, yoga is often used.
- One convenient and common way to access yoga practices specifically dedicated to LBP is through the internet.
- However, the informational quality of online yoga for LBP videos has not been investigated.
PURPOSE
- To determine the prevalence and nature of potentially problematic narratives in popular online yoga for LBP videos.
METHODS
- A deductive content analysis was conducted on the 30 most-viewed yoga for LBP videos on a popular online video platform.
- The themes of interest were the purported …

Enlarged Perivascular Space Burden Predicts Declines In Cognitive And Functional Performance, Timothy Justin Libecap, Colleen A. Pappas, Christopher E. Bauer, Valentinos Zachariou, Flavius D. Raslau, Brian T. Gold
Neurology Faculty Publications
Introduction: We evaluated the relationship between baseline enlarged perivascular space (ePVS) burden and later cognitive decline.
Methods: 83 community-dwelling, older adults (aged 56–86) completed three annual cognitive assessments that included the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR®) Dementia Staging Instrument Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB) and composite measures of executive function and episodic memory. An MRI scan at baseline was used to count ePVS in the basal ganglia and centrum semiovale. Mixed effects models were run with ePVS as the predictor variable and cognitive measures as the dependent variable. Covariates included age, sex, education, cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) risk factors, and cSVD …

Clostridium Septicum: Cause Of Gas Gangrene In The Upper Extremity Leading To Proximal Trans-Humeral Amputation, A Review Of Clostridium Septicum., Mark Lagreca, Denise Chen, Patrick Frick, Genoveffa Morway, Austin Egger, Julia Mayberry
Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
INTRODUCTION: Gas gangrene is a rare, often lethal infection of soft tissue that is commonly associated with the Clostridial species due to penetrating injuries. Case reports of spontaneous atraumatic gas gangrene due to the Clostridium septicum species are exceedingly rare. Atraumatic C. septicum is notably related to bowel pathologies, immunodeficiencies, and individuals with vascular insufficiency. The rapid progression of Clostridium myonecrosis contributes to its high mortality rates.
CASE REPORT: The authors report a case of a 71-year-old right-hand-dominant female who developed fulminant atraumatic left forearm pain and swelling. The patient was indicated for emergent irrigation and debridement (I&D) of the …

Implementation of the AHRQ Nurse Bedside Shift Report on a Progressive Care Unit
Objectives:
1. After reviewing this presentation participants will be able to understand how purposeful bedside report was implemented on a progressive care unit (PCU).
2. After reviewing this content participants will understand how bedside report impacted safety events and falls on the PCU.
Purpose/Aims:
Background: Advancing evidence-based practice at our hospital is one of the top priorities of our nursing strategic plan to achieve excellent patient outcomes. The PCU wanted to understand if implementing a nurse bedside shift report would impact safety events and fall rates on …

UK CARES Faculty Publications
Objective: This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of an auricular acupressure intervention on sleep quality, mood state, and quality of life (QOL) among parents of children with cancer.
Methods: Thirty-five parents were assigned to three-weeks intervention in an active auricular acupressure group (AAG) or a sham auricular acupressure group (SAG). Feasibility was assessed by adherence to the acupressure protocol. Outcomes were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for sleep quality, the Profile of Mood States for mood, and the QOL short form for QOL. The data were analyzed using generalized estimating equations to identify changes …
