An Atypical Case Of Herpes Simplex 1 Meningitis, Nadim Ojaimi, Sofia Zhang, Marcos Wolff, Christopher James Haas

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is well known to cause Central Nervous System (CNS) infections, ranging from more common HSV-2 viral meningitis to the more rare and severe HSV-1 encephalitis. Here we present an atypical case of aseptic meningitis due to HSV-1. Intriguingly, despite the potential severity of HSV-1 infections, the patient had an uncomplicated course with only mild symptoms that resolved with conservative management alone. This case report aims to provide a frame of reference for the non-specific presentation of a patient with uncommon HSV-1 meningitis.

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Sevelamer is a non-absorbable polymer used to treat hyperphosphatemia in individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis. The deposition of sevelamer crystals in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, especially in the colon, can cause mucosal inflammation, pseudopolyps, ulceration, ischemia, or necrosis. Owing to its rarity and lack of physician awareness, the actual incidence and prevalence of sevelamer-induced gastrointestinal mucosal injury (SIGMI) remain unknown. The current evidence is retrospective, in the form of observational studies. This systematic review of case reports provides an overview of SIGMI, with a focus on its etiology, signs and symptoms, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management. Electronic databases, …

Position- And Sex-Related Differences In Sagittal And Frontal Plane Concentric Isokinetic Hip Muscle Peak Torques And Agonist-Antagonist Ratios, Lisa T. Hoglund, Matthew C. Schiffino, James E. Freels, Isabella G. Romano

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Hip muscle weakness is associated with many musculoskeletal conditions and athletic injuries. Isokinetic testing is often performed to measure a patient's strength or to assess treatment response. Patient sex and positioning during isokinetic strength testing may influence peak torque production and the agonist-antagonist peak torque ratios. However, different test positions are used clinically and in research to measure hip muscle strength. It is unknown how patient test position or sex impacts test results.

HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether concentric isokinetic peak torques of sagittal and frontal plane hip muscles differ when tested in recumbent …

Low-abundance members of microbial communities are difficult to study in their native habitats, including Escherichia coli, a minor but common inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract, and key opportunistic pathogen of the urinary tract. While multi-omic analyses have detailed interactions between uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) and the bladder mediating urinary tract infection (UTI), little is known about UPEC in its pre-infection reservoir, the gastrointestinal tract, partly due to its low relative abundance (<1%). To sensitively explore the genomes and transcriptomes of diverse gut E. coli, we develop E. coli PanSelect, which uses probes designed to specifically capture E. coli's broad pangenome. We demonstrate its ability to enrich diverse E. coli by orders of magnitude, in a mock community and in human stool from a study investigating recurrent UTI (rUTI). Comparisons of transcriptomes between gut E. coli of women with and without history of rUTI suggest rUTI gut E. coli are responding to increased oxygen and nitrate, suggestive of mucosal inflammation, which may have implications for recurrent disease. E. coli PanSelect is well suited for investigations of in vivo E. coli biology in other low-abundance environments, and the framework described here has broad applicability to other diverse, low-abundance organisms.

Erα Governs The Sexual Dimorphism In Hsp72-Mediated Control Of Mitochondrial Function, Exercise Capacity, And Insulin Sensitivity In Mice, Noelle Morrow, Amanda Lin, Zhenqi Zhou, Hirotaka Iwasaki, Brian Drew, Mark Febbraio, Andrea Hevener

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

HSP72 is a chaperone protein upregulated during exercise. Levels are reduced in aging and obesity, and increased levels are correlated with improvements in metabolic health in male mice and humans. Male HSP72KO mice have increased body fat, decreased insulin sensitivity, and a loss of mitochondrial quality control. Specifically, male KO mice have increased cytosolic Parkin levels, but the protein is unable to move to the mitochondria resulting in enlarged, hyperfused mitochondria associated with metabolic dysfunction. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of HSP72 in female mice to better understand the sexual dimorphism involved in the heat shock response. METHODS: …

Influence Of Fitness On Moderate-Intensity Blood Pressure Responses In Normotensive And Hypertensive Individuals, Joseph Larsen, Jayson Gifford Nov 2024

Influence Of Fitness On Moderate-Intensity Blood Pressure Responses In Normotensive And Hypertensive Individuals, Joseph Larsen, Jayson Gifford

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Early detection and treatment is important in cardiovascular disease because arteries are often occluded by 75% or more before symptoms become apparent. Exercise blood pressure has been shown to be predictive of future cardiovascular disease independent of resting blood pressure. However, many factors affecting exercise blood pressure need to be further investigated and described before exercise blood pressure can become a common practice. PURPOSE: To investigate how exercise intensity and fitness influence the blood pressure response in hypertensive and normotensive individuals. We hypothesized that hypertensive participants would have greater increases in exercise blood pressure than normotensive subjects during a …
