Reviewing how AI literature should be assessed before discussing current published literature and how AI is currently being used in practice is beneficial. While dentists and allied dental healthcare professionals receive training on evaluating the quality of scientific literature generally, AI studies are relatively new and only some dental professionals have received formal education regarding the evaluation of an AI-related publication.2 It is unclear how many reviewers for traditional dental journals have an appropriate level of experience to adjudicate the effectiveness of an AI submission; some meta-analytic studies suggest that a significant number of reported AI studies in dentistry have …

Dihydroethidium-Derived Fluorescence In Electrically Stressed Cells Indicates Intracellular Microenvironment Modifications Independent Of Ros, Esin B. Sözer, Iurii Semenov, P. Thomas Vernier

Bioelectrics Publications

Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is widely suggested as a trigger for biological consequences of electric field exposures, such as those in electroporation applications. ROS are linked with membrane barrier function degradation, genetic damage, and complex events like immunological cell death. Dihydroethidium (DHE) is commonly used to monitor ROS in cells. DHE is linked to intracellular ROS by a primary oxidation product, Ethidium (Eth+), that shows increased fluorescence upon binding to polynucleotides. We observed changes in DHE-derived fluorescence in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells post 300-ns electric pulse exposures, comparing them to tert-butyl-hydroperoxide (t-BHP) induced oxidative stress. …

Bioelectrics Publications

The Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), often preceded by acute lung injury (ALI), is characterized by the accumulation of inflammatory fluid in the lung alveoli, leaky alveolar epithelium and endothelium, and overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This progression from ALI to ARDS is a major contributor to the high mortality observed in COVID-19 patients. The Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 binds to lung ACE2 and, in addition to facilitating viral cell entry, it plays an important role in the development of ALI and ARDS, especially in the later phases of COVID-19 as well as long COVID. Protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) 4A3 is …

Bioelectrics Publications

Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is a malignant cancer with a very high mortality rate around the world. African American(AA) women are 28% more likely to die from triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) than white women with the same diagnosis. AA patients are also more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage of the disease and have the lowest survival rates for any stage of diagnosis; There are very few existing anti TNBC drugs with therapeutic efficacy hence newer anti TNBC drug design and investigation is needed. Carbon Nano Tubes(CNT) in recent years have shown effective anti-cancer properties in various …

Nanosecond pulsed atmospheric pressure plasma jets (ns-APPJs) produce reactive plasma species, including charged particles and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), which can induce oxidative stress in biological cells. Nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) has also been found to cause permeabilization of cell membranes and induce apoptosis or cell death. Combining the treatment of ns-APPJ and nsPEF may enhance the effectiveness of cancer cell inactivation with only moderate doses of both treatments. Employing ns-APPJ powered by 9 kV, 200 ns pulses at 2 kHz and 60-nsPEF of 50 kV/cm at 1 Hz, the synergistic effects on pancreatic cancer cells (Pan02) …

Colitis is a chronic bowel disease characterized by damage to the lining of the large intestine, with its precise underlying causes remaining incompletely understood. In this study, we provide evidence that circular RNA circNlgn plays a pivotal role in promoting the development of colitis. Colitis patients produce significant higher levels of circNlgn. Transgenic mice expressing circNlgn exhibit heightened susceptibility to colitis development and progression, primarily attributed to the presence of the protein isoform Nlgn173 encoded by circNlgn. Nlgn173 undergoes translocation into cell nuclei, where it interacts with actin, impeding the binding of actin-related protein 2 and 3 (Arp2/3) complex to …

Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the most common motor neurodegenerative disease worldwide. Given the complexity of PD etiology and the different metabolic derangements correlated to the disease, metabolomics profiling of patients is a helpful tool to identify patho-mechanistic pathways for the disease development. Dopamine metabolism has been the target of several previous studies, of which some have reported lower phenylalanine and tyrosine levels in PD patients compared to controls. Methods: In this study, we have collected plasma from 27 PD patients, 18 reference controls, and 8 high-risk controls to perform a metabolomic study using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). …

Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura D. Hermer Jan 2024

Intentional Parenthood, Contingent Fetal Personhood, And The Right To Reproductive Self-Determination, Laura D. Hermer

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that intent should govern legal parenthood, regardless of the method of conception, the person’s biological or genetic relationship to the resulting embryo/fetus, or the person’s gender. This proposition is not new. This Article adds to scholarly discourse by extending the concept: Intent should not just determine parenthood, but also fetal rights. When a pregnant person establishes their procreational intent (or lack thereof) prior to birth, then both the existence (or lack thereof) of legal protections for the embryo/fetus and the gestator’s rights and duties (or lack thereof) should flow from this intent. Non-gestating gamete contributors would do …

Covid-19 Vaccine Intercountry Distribution Inequality And Its Underlying Factors: A Combined Concentration Index Analysis And Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, Wafa Abu El Kheir-Mataria, Zeinab Khadr, Hassan El Fawal, Sungsoo Chun

Faculty Journal Articles

Introduction: Inequitable access to COVID-19 vaccines among countries is a pressing global health issue. Factors such as economic power, political power, political stability, and health system strength contribute to disparities in vaccine distribution. This study aims to assess the inequality in vaccine distribution among countries based on these factors and identify their relationship with COVID-19 vaccine distribution. Methods: A Concentration Index (CI) analysis was conducted to evaluate inequalities in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines among countries based on four separate variables: GDP per capita, political stability (PS), World Power Index (WPI), and Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Additionally, Multiple Linear Regression …

Autopathography Across Media: Trauma And Fluid Embodied Subjectivity, He (Kristen) Shen Jan 2024

Autopathography Across Media: Trauma And Fluid Embodied Subjectivity, He (Kristen) Shen

Honors Theses

Illness memoirs with first-person point of view have gained more attention in recent years among medical sociologists and anthropologists. Different from traditional “case histories”written by doctors that are in danger of ignoring patients’ voices, autopathograhical works delineate narrators’ transformative experiences of persons to patients, emphasizing the importance of gaining social understanding of illness. Focusing on three works within the category of autopathography across genres and media forms in the late 1950s and contemporary periods, The Cancer Journals (1980) written by Audre Lorde, The Collected Schizophrenias (2019) written by Esmé Weijun Wang, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) directed …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Vector-Borne Disease Burden In The United States: Exploring The Epidemiological Evidence, Leah V. Loetman

Honors Theses

Climate change models predict shifts in vector-borne diseases (VBDs) around the world, including in the United States. However, to my knowledge there has yet to be a comprehensive descriptive epidemiological study examining prevalence, geographic distribution, and trends for all tick- and mosquito-borne diseases in the United States. I compiled data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which publishes yearly case numbers for 17 vector-borne diseases. However, these publications depend on a scattered framework of state regulations regarding disease reporting. I compiled data from the CDC to determine the current geographic distribution, prevalence, and trends of tick- and mosquito-borne …

Reviving Caribbean Scleractinian Corals: Medication In Ex-Situ Care, Christopher E. Cho Jan 2024

Reviving Caribbean Scleractinian Corals: Medication In Ex-Situ Care, Christopher E. Cho

Honors Theses

The Caribbean basin is facing an unprecedented decline in coral reef health, with factors such as coral disease, climate change, and algal overgrowth contributing to the deterioration of these vital ecosystems. In response, land-based facilities have emerged to aid in coral conservation and restoration efforts. One aspect of these conservation efforts involves the treatment of coral ailments, which is still an emerging field within coral conservation. By medicating corals, researchers aim to combat diseases and alleviate stressors that threaten coral health. This practice holds promise for preserving genetic diversity and supporting future repopulation initiatives. This study evaluates the effectiveness of …

Sprtn Metalloprotease As A Target To Sensitize Cancer Cells To Crosslinking Chemotherapy, Cole J. Turner Jan 2024

Sprtn Metalloprotease As A Target To Sensitize Cancer Cells To Crosslinking Chemotherapy, Cole J. Turner

Honors Theses

Bifunctional alkylating agents have demonstrated high clinical utility as a chemotherapeutic strategy against cancer. These compounds have been well-characterized for their capacity to exert cytotoxicity via interstrand DNA crosslinking. However, the same electrophilic chemistry can also form DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs) whose contributions to these drugs’ antitumor effects have been less well-defined. Recently, the metalloprotease SPRTN has been implicated as a predominant mediator of DPC repair in mammalian cells. Previous work has demonstrated that SPRTN deficiency increases the sensitivity of cancer cells to DPC-inducing agents such as formaldehyde and cisplatin, but these findings have yet to be translated more broadly across …

The Physicians' Crusade: A Forgotten War On Abortion, Feminism, And The Diversification Of The United States, Lucinda B. Harden Jan 2024

The Physicians' Crusade: A Forgotten War On Abortion, Feminism, And The Diversification Of The United States, Lucinda B. Harden

Honors Theses

Abortion in the United States was accessible and widely practiced until the mid- nineteenth century. In 1857 the physicians’ crusade, an anti-abortion political movement led by prominent medical doctors around the country, instigated the widespread criminalization of abortion by the end of the century. I argue that physicians wielded their scientific authority to validate increasingly conservative attitudes about race and gender. They appealed to national xenophobic and sexist backlash that accompanied progressive changes like industrialization and the abolition of slavery, amplifying those fears and offering politicians a source of control over female sexuality and a growing immigrant population: the criminalization …

A Study Protocol Testing Pre-Exposure Dose And Compound Pre-Exposure On The Mechanisms Of Latent Inhibition Of Dental Fear, Andrew L. Geers, Laura D. Seligman, Keenan A. Pituch, Ben Colagiuri, Hilary A. Marusak, Christine A. Rabinak, Natalie Turner, Sena L. Al-Ado, Michael Nedley Jan 2024

A Study Protocol Testing Pre-Exposure Dose And Compound Pre-Exposure On The Mechanisms Of Latent Inhibition Of Dental Fear, Andrew L. Geers, Laura D. Seligman, Keenan A. Pituch, Ben Colagiuri, Hilary A. Marusak, Christine A. Rabinak, Natalie Turner, Sena L. Al-Ado, Michael Nedley

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Background: Dental stimuli can evoke fear after being paired - or conditioned - with aversive outcomes (e.g., pain). Pre-exposing the stimuli before conditioning can impair dental fear learning via a phenomenon known as latent inhibition. Theory suggests changes in expected relevance and attention are two mechanisms responsible for latent inhibition. In the proposed research, we test whether pre-exposure dose and degree of pre-exposure novelty potentiate changes in expected relevance and attention to a pre-exposed stimulus. We also assess if the manipulations alter latent inhibition and explore the possible moderating role of individual differences in pain sensitivity.

Methods: Participants will be …

Review Of Current Dual-Antiplatelet And Triple Therapy Prescribing Practices At Providence Medical Group, Gina Kim, Christine Doran, Lauren Powell

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Abstract: Approximately 10% of patients with recent percutaneous intervention (PCI) have concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) and others may have concomitant venous thromboembolism (VTE). This makes choosing the optimal antithrombotic regimen challenging. The ACC published a 2020 decision pathway to guide safe and evidence-based use of antiplatelet and anticoagulant combinations for certain patients. These situations include patients with prior AF on anticoagulation and the need for PCI, patients with new-onset AF requiring anticoagulation in a patient already on antiplatelet therapy for coronary artery disease (CAD), patients with prior VTE on anticoagulation and the need for PCI, and patients with new or …
