Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is an autosomal recessive disease of the lung, characterized by diffuse deposits of intra-alveolar calcium phosphate microliths. It usually affects both sexes, presenting mostly in the second and third decades. The clinical course is highly variable, ranging from being asymptomatic to respiratory failure. PAM is usually diagnosed after careful clinical, radiological, and pathological evaluation, usually when patients present for other medical purposes. Here, a case of PAM in a middle-aged man presenting with acute-on-chronic hypoxemic respiratory failure is reported, with a review of the literature.

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has extended the survivability of critically ill patients beyond their unsupported prognosis and has widened the timeframe for making an informed decision about the goal of care. However, an extended time window for survival does not necessarily translate into a better outcome and the sustaining treatment is ultimately withdrawn in many patients. Emerging evidence has implicated the determining role of palliative care consult (PCC) in direction of the care that critically ill patients receive. Objective: To evaluate the impact of PCC in withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (WOLST) among critically ill patients, who were placed on …

The early branching eukaryote Trypanosoma brucei divides uni-directionally along the longitudinal cell axis from the cell anterior toward the cell posterior, and the cleavage furrow ingresses along the cell division plane between the new and the old flagella of a dividing bi-flagellated cell. Regulation of cytokinesis in T. brucei involves actomyosin-independent machineries and trypanosome-specific signaling pathways, but the molecular mechanisms underlying cell division plane positioning remain poorly understood. Here we report a kinesin-13 family protein, KIN13-5, that functions downstream of FPRC in the cytokinesis regulatory pathway and determines cell division plane placement. KIN13-5 localizes to multiple cytoskeletal structures, interacts …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most prevalent form of dementia, is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta (A ) plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau tangles. Currently, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) impacts 50 million individuals, with projections anticipating an increase to 152 million by the year 2050. Despite the increasing global prevalence of AD, its underlying pathology remains poorly understood, posing challenges for early diagnosis and treatment. Recent research suggests a link between gut dysbiosis and the aggregation of A , the development of tau proteins, and the occurrence of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress are associated with AD. However, investigations into the gut–brain axis …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background and problem: During childbirth, one of the most common diagnoses of pathology is ‘failure to progress’, frequently resulting in labour augmentation and intervention cascades. However, failure to progress is poorly defined and evidence suggests that some instances of slowing, stalling and pausing labour patterns may represent physiological plateaus. Aim: To explore how midwives conceptualise physiological plateaus and the significance such plateaus may have for women's labour trajectory and birth outcome. Methods: Twenty midwives across Australia participated in semi-structured interviews between September 2020 and February 2022. Constructivist grounded theory methodology was applied to analyse data, including multi-phasic coding and application …

Effectiveness Of Antibiotic Stewardship For Healthcare Providers At Urgent Care Clinics, Helen T. Adewole
Effectiveness Of Antibiotic Stewardship For Healthcare Providers At Urgent Care Clinics, Helen T. Adewole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotics have revolutionized modern medicine; however, the overuse in urgent care and primary care significantly contributes to the global burden of infections resistant to available antimicrobial medicines. Approximately 30% of the antimicrobials prescribed in acute care settings are unnecessary. Patient demand for antibiotics has seemingly skyrocketed following the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Practitioners must be knowledgeable about antibiotic stewardship initiatives, such as the wait-and-see approach, to reduce antibiotic overuse and improve the trajectory of antibiotic resistance and patient health outcomes. The gap in practice was the limited awareness of scientific evidence-based tools to partner with patients and improve antibiotic prescription patterns. …

Conference Presentation Abstracts
The field of shoulder arthroplasty has changed markedly since the inception of the reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) in 2004. With yearly gains of 32%, the RTSA now encompasses the largest portion of shoulder arthroplasty procedures. In contrast, the anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (ATSA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA) have steadied or decreased in usage. Some have offered several explanations for these trends, such as expanding indications for the RTSA, in particular for pathologies traditionally treated with ATSA such as glenohumeral arthritis with an intact rotator cuff and no major bone loss/deformity. Others have cited superior postoperative outcomes of the RTSA over …

INTRODUCTION: Current standard total shoulder pegged glenoid component designs have a high rate of loosening, which accounts for the most common long term reason for surgical failure. Glenoid design, method of fixation, and implantation version all play a role in component stability. With current designs, 51% of standard glenoid components shift at 2 years. This study aimed to compare the biomechanical stability of a novel circular glenoid with peripheral ring fixation to a standard anchor pegged glenoid. Additionally, we compared the estimated bone removal for the glenoid design types. METHODS: Biomechanical testing [Figure 1] was performed to assess the glenoid …

Background
Media outlets that report on firearm injuries and deaths may provide an important role in emphasizing safe storage practices, particularly when unintentional firearm injuries and deaths occur among young children. There has been a scarcity of research on aspects of media reports on injuries, particularly concerning prevention messaging. The objective of the present study was to examine prevention messaging on the safe storage of firearms among media outlets when reporting on unintentional firearm injury deaths among children aged 0–11.
Methods
The Gun Violence Archive collects information from media sources regarding firearm injuries and deaths. We analyzed data from 2021 …

Given elevated depression rates since the onset of the pandemic and potential downstream implications, this research examined the association between activity engagement and depression among middle-aged and older adults postlockdown. This study aimed to (a) identify activity engagement profiles among middle-aged and older adults, (b) understand factors associated with profile memberships, and (c) compare depression trajectories across profiles as COVID-19 restrictions eased over 16 months in Singapore. This longitudinal study involved 6,568 middle-aged and older adults. Latent growth analysis was first conducted to obtain estimates of depression trajectories for each individual. Latent profile analysis was then conducted to identify different …

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought critical changes to job demands and resources, which in turn affect employee motivation and outcomes. This study explores how COVID-19–induced work intensity and COVID-19–related organizational support influence public service motivation (PSM) and job satisfaction. Using survey data from a nationally representative sample of 1,430 South Korean central government employees collected during the pandemic (May–June 2020), we find that COVID-19–induced work intensity is positively associated with PSM, which in turn has a positive association with job satisfaction. We also find that COVID-19–related organizational support has both direct and indirect associations with job satisfaction through PSM. These …

BACKGROUND: Myocarditis is a common cause of pediatric heart failure which may require mechanical circulatory support (MCS). The purpose of this study is to describe MCS strategies used in a nationwide cohort of pediatric patients with myocarditis, identify trends over time, and compare outcomes between MCS strategies.
METHODS: This study utilized the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID), a national sample of administrative discharge data. KID admissions from 2003-2016 were queried using ICD-9/10 codes to identify those with a diagnosis of myocarditis. MCS outcomes were compared using logistic regression.
RESULTS: Of 5,661 admissions for myocarditis, MCS was used in 424 (7.5%), comprised …
