Adaptation Of The Dangerous Decibels Program To Youth In Farming, Whitney Paige Hodges Apr 2024

Adaptation Of The Dangerous Decibels Program To Youth In Farming, Whitney Paige Hodges

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

The prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) among youth in farming communities is a pressing issue, primarily due to prolonged exposure to loud farm environments. Effective health communication techniques that focus on education and NIHL prevention are essential to convey critical health messages to young individuals in agricultural communities. The Dangerous Decibels program employs these techniques, emphasizing the identification of hazardous noises, understanding the consequences of noise overexposure, and promoting hearing protection measures. It is crucial to acknowledge that the effectiveness of health communication messages can vary among different social groups, necessitating a tailored program to effectively inform young individuals …

Use Of Translational Science, Continuous Glucose Monitoring In The Primary Care Setting For Management Of Nesidioblastosis: A Case Report And Literature Review, Karuna Manandhar, Othman Farahneh, Ahmad Damlakhy, Ali Lattouf, Gerardo Munoz-Monaco

School of Medicine Publications

Nesidioblastosis is a term used to describe histologic changes in the pancreatic cell, which are defined by beta cell hypertrophy and the formation of ductoinsular complexes. It is a disease previously most extensively identified in neonates and is a rare cause of endogenous hypoglycemia in the adult population. However, with increasing numbers of gastric bypass surgeries for the management of obesity in recent years, there has been a growing number of populations with post-gastric bypass surgery-related nesidioblastosis. Here, we will present a case of a 60-year-old female with a history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery who initially presented with …

Altered apolipoprotein kinetics play a critical role in promoting dyslipidemia and atherogenesis. Human apolipoprotein kinetics have been extensively evaluated, but similar studies in mice are hampered by the lack of robust methods suitable for the small amounts of blood that can be collected at sequential time points from individual mice. We describe a targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method for simultaneously quantifying the stable isotope enrichment of several apolipoproteins represented by multiple peptides in serial blood samples (15 μl each) obtained after retro-orbital injection of

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic stem cell malignancies characterized by abnormal hematopoietic cell maturation, increased apoptosis of bone marrow cells, and anemia. They are the most common myeloid blood cancers in American adults. The full complement of gene mutations that contribute to the phenotypes or clinical symptoms in MDS is not fully understood. Around 10%-25% of MDS patients harbor an interstitial heterozygous deletion on the long arm of chromosome 5 [del(5q)], creating haploinsufficiency for a large set of genes, including HSPA9. The HSPA9 gene encodes for the protein mortalin, a highly conserved heat shock protein …

T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia/Lymphoma (T-All) With Negative Screening Immaturity Markers And Gamma-Delta Receptor Expression, Maria Faraz, Anita Parmigiani, Nina Monkash, Anne Chen

2020-Current year OA Pubs

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (T-ALL) is characterized by the combination of T-cell lineage and the presence of immaturity marker(s). Sometimes, the most common immaturity markers for initial flow cytometry screening in T-ALL may be negative, which can be a diagnostic pitfall. When a lack of common first-line immaturity markers is encountered in combination with gamma/delta T-cell receptor expression, a misdiagnosis of mature gamma-delta T-cell leukemia/lymphoma could be rendered. Here, we discuss two T-ALL cases with the absence of common flow cytometry immaturity markers and positive gamma/delta receptor expression.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Identifying neuroimaging risk markers for depression has been an elusive goal in psychopathology research. Despite this, smaller hippocampal volume has emerged as a potential risk marker for depression, with recent research suggesting this association is moderated by family income. The current pre-registered study aimed to replicate and extend these findings by examining the moderating role of family income and three dimensions of environmental experience on the link between hippocampus volume and later depression. Data were drawn from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study and were comprised of 6693 youth aged 9-10 years at baseline. Results indicated that psychosocial threat …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is detected in most human tissues. However, ALP activity is routinely assayed using high concentrations of artificial colorimetric substrates in phosphate-free laboratory buffers at lethal pH. Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is the inborn-error-of-metabolism caused by loss-of-function mutation(s) of the ALPL gene that encodes the ALP isoenzyme expressed in bone, liver, kidney, and elsewhere and is therefore designated "tissue-nonspecific" ALP (TNSALP). Consequently, HPP harbors clues concerning the biological function of this phosphohydrolase that is anchored onto the surface of cells. The biochemical signature of HPP features low serum ALP activity (hypophosphatasemia) together with elevated plasma levels of three natural substrates …

BACKGROUND: Intracranial electrodes are typically localized from post-implantation CT artifacts. Automatic algorithms localizing low signal-to-noise ratio artifacts and high-density electrode arrays are missing. Additionally, implantation of grids/strips introduces brain deformations, resulting in registration errors when fusing post-implantation CT and pre-implantation MR images. Brain-shift compensation methods project electrode coordinates to cortex, but either fail to produce smooth solutions or do not account for brain deformations.

NEW METHODS: We first introduce GridFit, a model-based fitting approach that simultaneously localizes all electrodes' CT artifacts in grids, strips, or depth arrays. Second, we present CEPA, a brain-shift compensation algorithm combining orthogonal-based projections, spring-mesh models, …

Persistent immune activation contributes significantly to left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and adverse remodeling in heart failure (HF). In contrast to their well-known essential role in acute myocardial infarction (MI) as first responders that clear dead cells and facilitate subsequent reparative macrophage polarization, the role of neutrophils in the pathobiology of chronic ischemic HF is poorly defined. To determine the importance of neutrophils in the progression of ischemic cardiomyopathy, we measured their production, levels, and activation in a mouse model of chronic HF 8 weeks after permanent coronary artery ligation and large MI. In HF mice, neutrophils were more abundant both …

PURPOSE: High-quality CBCT and AI-enhanced adaptive planning techniques allow CBCT-guided stereotactic adaptive radiotherapy (CT-STAR) to account for inter-fractional anatomic changes. Studies of intra-fractional respiratory motion management with a surface imaging solution for CT-STAR have not been fully conducted. We investigated intra-fractional motion management in breath-hold Ethos-based CT-STAR and CT-SBRT (stereotactic body non-adaptive radiotherapy) using optical surface imaging combined with onboard CBCTs.

METHODS: Ten cancer patients with mobile lower lung or upper abdominal malignancies participated in an IRB-approved clinical trial (Phase I) of optical surface image-guided Ethos CT-STAR/SBRT. In the clinical trial, a pre-configured gating window (± 2 mm in AP …
