Enzymatic Electrochemical Biosensors For Neurotransmitters Detection: Recent Achievements And Trends, Zina Fredj, Baljit Singh Dr., Mohamed Bahri, Peiwu Qin, Mohamad Sawan

Articles

Neurotransmitters (NTs) play a crucial role in regulating the behavioral and physiological functions of the nervous system. Imbalances in the concentrations of NT have been directly linked to various neurological diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Alzheimer’s disease), in addition to multiple psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, dementia, and other neurodegenerative disorders. Hence, the rapid and real-time monitoring of the NTs is of utmost importance in comprehending neurological functions and identifying disorders. Among different sensing techniques, electrochemical biosensors have garnered significant interest due to their ability to deliver fast results, compatibility for miniaturization and portability, high sensitivity, and good controllability. …

Quantifying Farm-To-Fork Greenhouse Gas Emissions For Five Dietary Patterns Across Europe And North America: A Pooled Analysis From 2009 To 2020, Daniel Burke, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini Jan 2023

Quantifying Farm-To-Fork Greenhouse Gas Emissions For Five Dietary Patterns Across Europe And North America: A Pooled Analysis From 2009 To 2020, Daniel Burke, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini

Articles

Dietary patterns are inherently related to greenhouse (GHG) emissions via agricultural practices and food production systems. As the global population is predicted to increase from 8 billion (current) to 9.6 billion by 2050 added pressure will be placed on existing agricultural systems, resulting in increased GHG emissions thus exacerbating climate change. Therefore, there is an urgent need to understand present-day dietary patterns to shift to sustainable and healthy diets to mitigate GHG emissions and meet future climate targets. However, no review or pooled analyses of dietary pattern emissions from a farm-to-fork perspective has been undertaken to date. The current study …

Integrating Consumer Risk Perception And Awareness With Simulation-Based Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment Using A Coupled Systems Framework: A Case Study Of Private Groundwater Users In Ontario, Tessa Latchmore, Sarah Lavallee, Paul Hynds, R. Stephen Brown R. Stephen Brown, Anna Majury

Articles

Private well users in Ontario are responsible for ensuring the potability of their own private drinking water source through protective actions (i.e., water treatment, well maintenance, and regular water quality testing). In the absence of regulation and limited surveillance, quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) represents the most practical and robust approach to estimating the human health burden attributable to private wells. For an increasingly accurate estimation, QMRA of private well water should be represented by a coupled model, which includes both the socio-cognitive and physical aspects of private well water contamination and microbial exposure. The objective of the current study …

Assessing The Risk Of Acute Gastrointestinal Illness Attributable To Three Enteric Pathogens From Contaminated Private Water Wells In Ontario, Tessa Latchmore, Paul Hynds, R. Stephen Brown, Kevin Mcdermott, Anna Majury Jan 2023

Assessing The Risk Of Acute Gastrointestinal Illness Attributable To Three Enteric Pathogens From Contaminated Private Water Wells In Ontario, Tessa Latchmore, Paul Hynds, R. Stephen Brown, Kevin Mcdermott, Anna Majury

Articles

The province of Ontario compromises the largest groundwater reliant population in Canada serving approximately 1.6 million individuals. Unlike municipal water systems, private well water is not required to meet water quality regulatory standards and thus source maintenance, treatment and testing remains the responsibility of the well owner. Infections associated with private drinking water systems are rarely documented given their typically sporadic nature, thus the human health effects (e.g., acute gastrointestinal illness (AGI)) on consumers remains relatively unknown, representing a significant gap in water safety management. The current study sought to quantify the risk of waterborne AGI attributed to Giardia, shiga-toxin …

Articles

Antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli isolates have emerged in various ecologic compartments and evolved to spread globally. We sought to (1.) investigate the occurrence of ESBL-producing E. coli (ESBL-Ec) in feces from free-range chickens in a rural region and (2.) characterize the genetic background of antimicrobial resistance and the genetic relatedness of collected isolates. Ninety-five feces swabs from free-range chickens associated with two households (House 1/House 2) in a rural region in northern Tunisia were collected. Samples were screened to recover ESBL-Ec, and collected isolates were characterized for phenotype/genotype of antimicrobial resistance, integrons, and molecular typing (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus …

Unintended Consequences Of Covid-19 Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (Npis) For Population Health And Health Inequalities, Coilin Ohaiseadha, Gerry A. Quinn, Ronan Connolly, Awwad Wilson, Michael Connolly, Willie Soon, Paul Hynds

Articles

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, governments around the world have adopted an array of measures intended to control the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, using both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). NPIs are public health interventions that do not rely on vaccines or medicines and include policies such as lockdowns, stay-at-home orders, school closures, and travel restrictions. Although the intention was to slow viral transmission, emerging research indicates that these NPIs have also had unintended consequences for other aspects of public health. Hence, we conducted a narrative review of studies investigating these unintended consequences of …

Identifying Novel Data-Driven Dietary Patterns Via Dimensionality Reduction And Associations With Socioeconomic Profile And Health Outcomes In Ireland, Daniel Burke, Annemarie E. Bennett, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini

Articles

Dietary patterns and body mass index (BMI) play a significant role in the development of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, including Ireland. A cross-sectional survey was conducted across Ireland to collate respondents’ socioeconomic profiles, health status, and dietary patterns with a representative sample size of 957 adult respondents. Principal component analysis (PCA) and statistical analyses were subsequently employed. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to use recent (2021) nationally representative data to characterise dietary patterns in Ireland via dimensionality reduction. Five distinct dietary patterns (“meat-focused”, “dairy/ovo-focused”, “vegetable-focused”, “seafood-focused”, and “potatofocused”) were …

Behavioral Pathways To Private Well Risk Mitigation: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Simon Mooney, Martin Boudou, Jean O'Dwyer, Paul Hynds Jan 2023

Behavioral Pathways To Private Well Risk Mitigation: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Simon Mooney, Martin Boudou, Jean O'Dwyer, Paul Hynds

Articles

Complex, multi hazard risks such as private groundwater contamination necessitate multiannual risk reduction actions including seasonal, weather-based hazard evaluations. In the Republic of Ireland (ROI), high rural reliance on unregulated private wells renders behavior promotion a vital instrument toward safeguarding household health from waterborne infection. However, to date, pathways between behavioral predictors remain unknown while latent constructs such as extreme weather event (EWE) risk perception and self-efficacy (perceived behavioral competency) have yet to be sufficiently explored. Accordingly, a nationwide survey of 560 Irish private well owners was conducted, with structural equation modeling (SEM) employed to identify underlying relationships determining key …

Optimisation Of Raman Spectral Processing For Classification Of Radiotherapeutic Toxicity, Isha Behl, Dinesh Medipally, Chris Talbot, Aidan Meade, Fiona Lyng

Conference papers

Severe radiation toxicity can continue years after the completion of radiotherapy for prostate cancer patients. Currently, it is impossible to predict before treatment which patients will experience these long-term side effects. New approaches based on vibrational spectroscopy have advantages over lymphocyte and genomic assays in terms of minimal sample preparation, speed and cost. A high throughput method has been developed to measure Raman spectra from liquid plasma in a cover glass bottomed 96 well plate. However, the Raman spectra can show contributions from glass and water. The current study aims to optimise pre-processing steps to improve classification performance.

Identification Of Precancerous Oral Lesions Using Minimally Invasive Sampling Techniques And Raman Microspectroscopy, Isha Behl Jan 2023

Identification Of Precancerous Oral Lesions Using Minimally Invasive Sampling Techniques And Raman Microspectroscopy, Isha Behl

Conference papers

The gold standard diagnosis of oral pre-cancer/cancer is an invasive biopsy followed by a histological examination, which may present psychological trauma and risk of infection to patients. Moreover, multiple biopsies are often required to monitor precancer lesions' progression. With the aim of reducing the need for multiple biopsies, this study was undertaken to identify pre-cancerous lesions using minimally invasive brush biopsy and saliva samples, analysed by Raman spectroscopy.

Raman Spectroscopy For Early Detection Of Cervical Cancer, A Global Women’S Health Issue—A Review, Rubina Shaikh, Amuthachelvie Daniel, Fiona Lyng Jan 2023

Raman Spectroscopy For Early Detection Of Cervical Cancer, A Global Women’S Health Issue—A Review, Rubina Shaikh, Amuthachelvie Daniel, Fiona Lyng

Articles

This review focuses on recent advances and future perspectives in the use of Raman spectroscopy for cervical cancer, a global women’s health issue. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common women’s cancer in the world, and unfortunately mainly affects younger women. However, when detected at the early precancer stage, it is highly treatable. High-quality cervical screening programmes and the introduction of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine are reducing the incidence of cervical cancer in many countries, but screening is still essential for all women. Current gold standard methods include HPV testing and cytology for screening, followed by colposcopy and histopathology …

Introduction: An ancient disease identified in Egyptian and Peruvian mummies, tuberculous spondylitis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is considered the most common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) [1,5]. Despite the identification of the causative agent, the improvement in diagnostic tools, the production of the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, and the development of antimicrobial regimens since the disease was first described, it remains a major health burden today with significant morbidity and mortality among developing countries [5]. Spinal TB can lead to severe deformity and permanent neurological deficits, as such early recognition …
