Understanding The Relationship Between Undergraduate Students’ On-Campus Employment Status And Their Reported Sense Of Belonging To The Campus Community Post The Covid-19 Pandemic, Samantha Martinez
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Belonging has been studied for decades with many researchers concluding that humans have an inherent need to belong. Although each person’s level of need to belong differs, it is a deeply rooted human motivation that impacts a person’s feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Individuals develop a sense of belonging when they feel connected to others. The postsecondary journey allows for unique experiences and opportunities that foster a sense of belonging, which can assist college students to flourish in many aspects of their lives. Research has shown that belonging significantly impacts student well-being and academic achievement, making the topic imperative to continue …

In 2003, the United States saw an epidemic of monkeypox that was later traced back to rodents of West Africa infected with the monkeypox virus (MPXV). Disease in the United States seemed less severe than the smallpox-like disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In this study, researchers analyzed data from Central Africa: two distinct MPXV clades were confirmed by sequencing the genomes of MPXV isolates from Western Africa, the United States, and Central Africa. By comparing open reading frames across MPXV clades, scientists can infer which virus proteins might account for the observed variation in pathogenicity in …

Adaptive Evaluation For Systems In Rapid Change Or Sustained Transition: Innovations And Applications Generated From A Community-Based Diabetes Prevention Program During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Amy Kuhn
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Program evaluation is a key part of the life cycle of public health and prevention science projects. But in complex environments or evolving situations, existing evaluation theory faces challenges in successful practical application. Process evaluation can track changes as a program runs, but when a program operates outside of its original design, questions can arise related to fidelity of implementation and interpretation of results. Outcome evaluation often requires a closed system without changes to determine actual effects of a program, but in times of complicated change that isolation can be difficult to achieve or to work around. In practice, systems …

Empowering Kinship Caregivers In Texas: A Call To Action For Policy Change, The Rees-Jones Center For Foster Care Excellence
White Papers and Policy Briefs
Kinship care refers to the care of children and adolescents by relatives or close family friends, who are referred to as fictive kin. These relationships can be formal, meaning the child has been removed from a parent and placed by Child Protective Services (CPS) into the care of a relative or family friend, or informal, meaning the relationship occurs without any involvement from CPS. This brief focuses on the former and uses the term kinship care to refer to formal kinship caregiving.

Water And Brain Function: Effects Of Hydration Status On Neurostimulation And Neurorecording, Sam Critzer
Dissertations and Theses
Introduction: TMS and EEG are used to study normal neurophysiology, diagnose, and treat clinical neuropsychiatric conditions, but can produce variable results or fail. Both techniques depend on electrical volume conduction, and thus brain volumes. Hydration status can affect brain volumes and functions (including cognition), but effects on these techniques are unknown. We aimed to characterize the effects of hydration on TMS, EEG, and cognitive tasks. Methods: EEG and EMG were recorded during single-pulse TMS, paired-pulse TMS, and cognitive tasks from 32 human participants on dehydrated (12-hour fast/thirst) and rehydrated (1 Liter oral water ingestion in 1 hour) testing days. Hydration …
How Essential Oils Help Prevent Against Healthcare Workers’ Burnout, Lauren Casey
How Essential Oils Help Prevent Against Healthcare Workers’ Burnout, Lauren Casey
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
This project set out to see if stress and anxiety (leading to burnout) could be combatted with the use of essential oils (EOs). Burnout is a common concern amongst the medical community and healthcare providers are leaving their jobs and field at unprecedented rates. While EOs have been used for patients, they are rarely used for the healthcare providers’ benefit. Because of that, this project wanted to focus on the employee for a change, which in turn would benefit the patient by having a mentally-present provider and the company by having less turnover. The project consisted of a pre-survey prior …

Combating Compassion Fatigue In The Emergency Department, Pam Packard
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Combating compassion fatigue in the emergency department is vital to nurses’ well-being. Compassion fatigue is the result of negative physical, emotional, and spiritual strains that often burden nurses. The weight of compassion fatigue is explored throughout this conceptualization of Combating Compassion Fatigue. Two questions were explored: Does compassion fatigue affect compassion satisfaction? If so, is compassion fatigue a precursor to suboptimal compassion satisfaction?

Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: ABO incompatibility is one of the most common causes of immune-mediated neonatal jaundice. It occurs in approximately 20-25% of all pregnancies. Literature shows that 60- 80% of newborns will develop physiological jaundice within the first week of life. Globally, the incidence ranges from 10-41%. Early detection of newborns with ABO incompatibility-related jaundice can prevent the incidence of bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction. Whereas there have been extensive published data on rhesus isoimmunization, very few studies have examined ABO incompatibility and isoimmunization. From the published literature, there has been no known study that has assessed risk factors for developing clinically significant jaundice …

The neurodegenerative disease field has enjoyed extremely limited success in the development of effective therapeutics. One potential reason is the lack of disease models that yield accurate predictions and optimal therapeutic targets. Standard clinical trials have pre-determined a single treatment modality, which may be unrelated to the primary drivers of neurodegeneration. Recent proof-of-concept clinical trials using a precision medicine approach suggest a new model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as a chronic innate encephalitis that creates a network insufficiency. Identifying and addressing the multiple potential contributors to cognitive decline for each patient may represent a more effective strategy. Here we review …

The Successful Characteristics That Contribute To Black Male Students Matriculating Into Medical School, Cedric Brown
The Successful Characteristics That Contribute To Black Male Students Matriculating Into Medical School, Cedric Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In 2019, individuals that identified as Black represented 13.4% of the U.S. population, 12.5% of the undergraduate student enrollment population and 7.1% of the medical school population. Subsequently, this has yielded a 5% Black physician population and workforce consisting of just 2.3% Black male physicians (AAMC, 2018). The disproportionately low Black physician representation contributes to greater healthcare disparity outcomes within the U.S. Black population. This study is centered on the post-positive characteristics of Black male medical students that have successfully overcome barriers to entry and matriculated into medical school. The phenomenological post-positive study was conducted through the lens of Self-Efficacy …

Prg4/Cd44/Pp2a Signaling Axis: A Significant Regulator Of Gout Arthritis, Sandy Elsayed
Prg4/Cd44/Pp2a Signaling Axis: A Significant Regulator Of Gout Arthritis, Sandy Elsayed
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Introduction: Gout is a common chronic arthritis caused by monosodium urate (MSU) crystal deposition in joints leading to activation of synovial resident macrophages and downstream production of interleukin-1b (IL-1b). Xanthine oxidase (XO) catalyzes purines into uric acid (UA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that activate NLRP3 inflammasome. Protein phosphatase-2A (PP2A) may be involved in regulating inflammatory pathways in macrophages. Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) and its receptor CD44 and its transducer PP2A signaling axis play a biologically significant role in regulating urate crystal inflammation.
Methods: Monocytes and macrophages were primed with TLR2 agonist and stimulated with MSU crystals. Fingolimod (PP2A …
Redefining Paternalistic Practices In Women’S Health: How Dysfunctional Trust Relationships Impact Medical Autonomy Of Female Patients In The Contemporary Clinical Setting, Lauren K. O'Dell
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
Utilizing Trudy Govier’s (1997) conception of social trust, this dissertation will provide a framework for understanding trust in healthcare relationships and highlight some of the ways that unequal power distribution and dependency, poorly defined roles, and institutions complicate trust between women and their providers. This framework will also explain how distrust, especially prejudicial distrust, leads to paternalistic attitudes on the part of providers. Paternalism limits patient autonomy because medical autonomy is constitutively relational. This means that insofar as distrust causes paternalism, it also damages autonomy. Through negative outcomes, this lack of autonomy can cause patients to distrust healthcare, which can …

AbstractTraditional psychotherapeutic approaches are not always effective in alleviating psychological symptoms and improving functioning in young adults. Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) has been shown as a beneficial alternative therapeutic method developed for clients not helped by traditional methods. However, the essence of the therapeutic relationship that develops between the client, horse, therapist, and equine specialist has not been explored. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of the therapeutic relationship in young adults who participated in EAP. The frameworks of person-centered theory and self psychology guided the development of interview questions, data analysis, and interpretation. Four …
