Implementation Of A Novel Social-Emotional Learning Program To Advance Integration Of Wellness In Education Practice, Kit Knier, Gauri Sood, Will Ruffin Ii, Jennifer Arroyo, Ankit Sabharwal, Michael Bostwick, Chris Pierret

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Social-emotional learning (SEL) programs aim to enhance emotional intelligence by teaching problem solving, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship building skills. SEL interventions have been shown to improve quality of life and wellbeing, increasingly important outcomes in the wake of the staggering effects of the COVID-19 crisis on mental health. HappiGenius is a novel SEL program with the addition of mindful attention and self-compassion. We hypothesized HappiGenius would improve positive emotions, self-compassion, attention, mindful self-awareness, and social skills in a group of students. This observational cohort study took place at a diverse elementary school in a midsize midwestern city and …

Caregivers’ Views On Cannabis Use For Their Children With Autism, Taylor Sivori, Maclain Capron, Daniel E. Graves, Jill Harris, Roseann C. Schaaf

Jefferson Autism Center of Excellence Faculty Papers

Background: Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder impacting 1 in 44 children that is characterized by decreased social communication and problem behaviors. Despite the increasing accessibility of cannabis, there is limited guidance about its use and usefulness for autism. The purpose of this study is to query caregivers of autistic children about their experience, knowledge and interest in medical cannabis use for their children.

Method: Survey methodology was used to query caregivers of autistic children between ages five to ten years. Informants recruited through a large children’s hospital in New Jersey and the Autism Speaks website. Descriptive analyses of frequencies and …

Pharmacy Student Involvement In Population Health Management Of Statin Quality Measures, Neeloufar Fakourfar, Hindu Rao Feb 2023

Pharmacy Student Involvement In Population Health Management Of Statin Quality Measures, Neeloufar Fakourfar, Hindu Rao

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Pharmacists have demonstrated their value in population health management (PHM). With appropriate training, advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) students are also well positioned to participate in PHM.

Methods

At Providence Medical Foundation, a PHM workflow was remodeled to be more standardized and incorporate APPE students into the statin quality measure improvement process. This was driven by institutional goals for quality improvement in patient care and creating a better experiential teaching opportunity. APPE students underwent three training sessions and completed clinical review of patient charts, determined statin eligibility, and completed patient outreach. Rates of statin initiation and student feedback were …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges in health care, not the least of which was the need to find alternatives to an in-person evaluation to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus. Despite the discontinuation of elective procedures at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia (TJUH), Pennsylvania in March 2020, there was a subset of patients that required urgent surgical procedures. Consequently, there needed to be a different approach to the presurgical assessment of these patients. At our institution teleconsultation had gained acceptance by patients and providers prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore a program was rapidly developed …

Do Semantics Matter In Empathetic Person Perception Of Children Or Adults With Mental Illness?, Rylie Hansen, Caroline Polak, Emma Gries, Stevie Ostman, Gina A. Paganini, E. Paige Lloyd Feb 2023

Do Semantics Matter In Empathetic Person Perception Of Children Or Adults With Mental Illness?, Rylie Hansen, Caroline Polak, Emma Gries, Stevie Ostman, Gina A. Paganini, E. Paige Lloyd

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

Experiences of stigma, discrimination, or aggression negatively affect the well-being of people experiencing symptoms of psychopathology. However, empathy is thought to undermine prejudice and discrimination and is linked with positive outcomes (e.g., greater well-being, more social support, etc.) among those with stigmatized mental illnesses. The current work investigates the influence of target age (adult or child) and language type (person-first or identity-first) on how much empathic concern perceivers report toward individuals with a hypothetical mental health condition. This research contributes to an ongoing debate about whether person-first or identity-first language carries stigmatizing or protective effects, while also considering a novel …

The Effect Of Language Type And Perceived Controllability On Stigma And Compassion, Maddie Leake, Christine Mcgrath, Trudy Mickel, Claire Shaver, Gina A. Paganini, E. Paige Lloyd Feb 2023

The Effect Of Language Type And Perceived Controllability On Stigma And Compassion, Maddie Leake, Christine Mcgrath, Trudy Mickel, Claire Shaver, Gina A. Paganini, E. Paige Lloyd

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

Previous research suggests that mental health stigma creates significant barriers to treatment seeking and adherence, diminishes treatment outcomes, and motivates social rejection towards people experiencing mental illness; by contrast, compassion seems to offer protective effects, improving treatment outcomes and helping behavior. The current work extends the established literature by experimentally examining the independent and interactive effects of two factors theorized to influence stigma and compassion: controllability and language. Participants read vignettes about hypothetical mental illnesses explained with a genetic attribution (indicating low controllability) or a behavioral attribution (indicating high controllability) and completed measures of perceived controllability, stigma, and compassion. We …
