Investigation Of Clinically Relevant Fluconazole Resistance Mechanisms In The Fungal Pathogen Candida Parapsilosis, Laura Anne Doorley
Investigation Of Clinically Relevant Fluconazole Resistance Mechanisms In The Fungal Pathogen Candida Parapsilosis, Laura Anne Doorley
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Invasive candidiasis is a severe fungal infection associated with significant morbidity and mortality, particularly among the critically ill and immunocompromised. Candida parapsilosis is the most common non-albicans species causing invasive Candida infections in pediatric and neonatal populations worldwide and is particularly common in the countries of South America, Western Asia, Mediterranean Europe, and Southern Africa. For many of these countries, fluconazole and other triazoles are the first line antifungal agents used for effective treatment of invasive Candida infection. Until recently, rates of fluconazole resistance among C. parapsilosis isolates were relatively low, therefore the determination of clinically relevant resistance mechanisms in …

Multimorbidity In Diverse Populations: Stratified Analysis Of Race/Ethnicity, Age, Obesity, And Healthcare Costs, Manal Alshakhs
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
This research aims to fill an essential gap in understanding how Body Mass Index (BMI) cutoffs relate to multimorbidity across races in the United States (US). Given the significant and growing rates of obesity and multimorbidity, as well as the known differences in healthy fat distribution among different races, this is an important area of research. BMI is a widely used but imperfect measure of obesity, as it does not account for differences in body composition. However, it is still used as a diagnostic tool. It is vital to ensure that the cutoffs used to define obesity are appropriate for …

Far From Home: The Role Of Travel Distance And Care Fragmentation In Surgical Outcomes For Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Alexander Booth, Henry Colorado, Gayenell Magwood Phd, Rn, Faha, Faan, Erin Forster, Robert N. Axon, Thomas Curran
Publications
BACKGROUND: Fragmented care for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is known to correlate negatively with outcomes, but it is unclear which aspects of care fragmentation are relevant and potentially modifiable. Furthermore, there is little data on the relationship between travel distance and the benefits of integrated care models. Hypothesizing care coordination in the preoperative period may have a significant impact on surgical outcomes, we explored associations between integrated care, travel distance, and surgical outcomes. METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing index abdominal surgery was done to compare the rate of surgical complications with and without long travel distance …

To Obtain Informed Consent Or Not To Obtain Informed Consent? Drones For Health Programs In The Grey Zone Between Research And Public Health, Vyshnave Jeyabalan, Lorie Donelle, Patrick Meier, Elysée Nouvet

Drones are increasingly being introduced to support healthcare delivery around the world. Most Drones for Health projects are currently in the pilot phase, where frontline staff are testing the feasibility of implementing drones into their healthcare system. Many of these projects are happening in remote localities where populations have been historically under-served within national healthcare systems. Currently, there exists limited drone-specific guidance on best practices for engaging individuals in decision-making about drone use in their communities. Towards supporting the development of such guidance, this paper focuses on the issue of obtaining community and individual consent for implementing Drones for Health …

The Musical Touch On Mental Illness, Skylar Dunn
The Musical Touch On Mental Illness, Skylar Dunn
Senior Honors Theses
To understand the relationship amongst anxiety, depression, and music therapy, this integrative review synthesizes the major themes and relevant education of articles discussing mental health and the benefit of music. While most existing studies focus on using music therapy to treat pain and clinical anxiety, the content of this paper is written to emphasize how the same principles can be used in unmanageable stress and emotional decomposition. Each topic is analyzed and reviewed individually, pooling several sources for a thorough examination, and understanding of the subject. Once each area is fully summarized, the gap is addressed by pulling evidence from …

The Effect Of Endodontic Access Cavity Designs On Crack Propagation Of Mandibular Molars, Colin Kodama
The Effect Of Endodontic Access Cavity Designs On Crack Propagation Of Mandibular Molars, Colin Kodama
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Introduction: This study aimed to develop a 3-D finite elemental analysis (FEA) model and digitally incorporate a crack into this model. After model development, this study compared the load required to propagate this crack in a mandibular molar with 3 different endodontic cavity designs using FEA. Methods: 3-D printed mandibular first molars (Endo 3DP; Acadental, Lenexa, KS) were accessed with 3 different access cavities: a traditional access cavity (TRC), a ninja access cavity (NAC), and a truss access cavity (TUC). The teeth were instrumented to EndoSequence #35/.04 in the MB and ML canals and #40/.04 in the D canal. Each …

The Influence Of Peri-Cervical Dentin Conservation On The Propagation Of Cracks In Mandibular Molars, Hassanain Zaheer
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Introduction: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of peri-cervical dentin conservation during root canal treatment on the longitudinal propagation of cracks, utilizing the finite element method. Methods: Two 3D printed mandibular molars were subjected to a simulated root canal therapy protocol. The teeth were divided into two test groups: Group 1: Instrumented with using Protaper Gold (PTG) rotary files. Group 2: Instrumented with using TruNatomy. Each access was restored with composite at the level of the CEJ to the occlusal surface. The two teeth were digitized using a high-resolution micro–computed tomographic scan to create 3-D models …

Immediate Postoperative Dimensional Changes Following Implant Placement, Juan Felipe Valencia Rincon
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective: Hard tissue outcomes after implant placement have been well documented. However, there is scarce evidence on immediate soft tissue and patient-centered outcomes. The aim of this prospective study is to quantify post-implant placement edema and to correlate it with oral health-related quality of life. Methods: Patients undergoing a standardized two-stage implant placement at a single tooth-bound site were recruited (n=26; 54.13.3 years, 14 males). Soft tissue edema was recorded by using intraoral scans immediately pre- (PS) and post-operatively (IP), at 2 (2D), 7 (7D) and 14 days (14D) and 2 months (2M). After scan registration, ridge width, maximum height, …
