Risk Scores And Machine Learning To Identify Patients With Acute Periprosthetic Joints Infections That Will Likely Fail Classical Irrigation And Debridement., Marjan Wouthuyzen-Bakker, Noam Shohat, Javad Parvizi Md, Alex Soriano
Rothman Institute Papers
The most preferred treatment for acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is surgical debridement, antibiotics and retention of the implant (DAIR). The reported success of DAIR varies greatly and depends on a complex interplay of several host-related factors, duration of symptoms, the microorganism(s) causing the infection, its susceptibility to antibiotics and many others. Thus, there is a great clinical need to predict failure of the "classical" DAIR procedure so that this surgical option is offered to those most likely to succeed, but also to identify those patients who may benefit from more intensified antibiotic treatment regimens or new and innovative treatment …

Does Losing 5-7% Of A Prediabetic’S Body Weight While Completing The Diabetes Prevention Program Decrease Ascvd Risk?, Molly Kucera, T Marchewka, A Craib
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Purpose: According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one-third of adults have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) focuses on lifestyle modifications to help participants lose 5-7% of their body weight and prevent type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this study is to determine whether successful completion of the DPP is associated with a decrease in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk.
Methods: One-site, prospective cohort study. The DPP was implemented on-site at Farmington Village Family Practice and virtually via Zoom from January 2020 …

Background: Iron supplementation is considered an imperative strategy for anemia prevention and control during pregnancy in Pakistan. Although there is some evidence on the predictors of iron deficiency anemia among Pakistani women, there is a very limited understanding of factors associated with iron consumption among Pakistani pregnant women. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the predictors of iron consumption for at least ≥90 days during pregnancy in Pakistan.
Methods: We analyzed dataset from the nationally representative Pakistan Demographic Health Survey 2017-2018. The primary outcome of the current study was the consumption of iron supplementation for ≥90 days during the pregnancy …

Review: The Bidirectional Relationship Between Mitochondrial Respiratory Chain Inhibition And Import Machinery Malfunction In Parkinson’S Disease, Grace Riggs, Deepa Dabir
Honors Thesis
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is characterized by a loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) portion of the ventral midbrain, the region of the brain largely responsible for motor control, executive cognitive function, and emotional limbic activity (Sonne 2020). SNpc dopaminergic neurons are more vulnerable than those in other regions due to their high energy demand arising from long, highly branched, unmyelinated axons (Pissadaki & Bolam 2013). They also have a higher basal rate of oxidative phosphorylation, which has been hypothesized to further increase vulnerability in cases of PD (Pacelli et al., 2015). One of the major …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (2018) standards state that the entry-level occupational therapy curriculum must prepare students to practice in a broad range of practice settings, including new and emerging areas of occupational therapy. Health and wellness remain an emerging and not widely populated area of occupational therapy despite the growing research on its importance. Stancanelli (2020) stated that “with the expected growth of health care in the community and the expected increase in the older adult population, occupational therapy students need to be prepared to practice in the community and address health promotion and wellness needs of …

“I Was Like An Autumn Leaf That Looks Pretty From The Outside, But Would Break Once You Touched It”: A Case Study Of The Lived Experience Of Breast Cancer Survival, Wafa Hamad Almegewly, Dinah Gould, Sally Anstey
The Qualitative Report
In this hermeneutic phenomenological case study, we explored the lived experiences of one Saudi Arabian woman, Sahara, living with breast cancer and after, identifying her culture’s impact on the “meaning-making” process. We derived the data from a semi-structured interview and analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). The themes were: (1) “discourse”: being a breast cancer patient; (2) “sociality”: the complex sense of living with visibility and invisibility; and (3) “selfhood”: regaining the sense of being normal. The study benefits healthcare providers, who need to understand women’s life-world, the impact of culture when designing a program of survival care, and the …

OBJECTIVE: Tolerance is a known consideration for maintenance use of benzodiazepines and other antiseizure drugs; however, clinical experience suggests that tolerance may not be anticipated with long-term intermittent use of benzodiazepines as rescue therapy. Diazepam nasal spray (Valtoco®) is a proprietary intranasal formulation approved for the acute treatment of intermittent, stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity (ie, seizure clusters, acute repetitive seizures) in patients with epilepsy aged ≥6 years. Reported here are exploratory analyses investigating whether there was evidence of development of tolerance in an interim analysis of a long-term, phase 3, open-label safety study of diazepam nasal spray.

Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This dialogue contribution discusses whether it is possible to create favorable new social assistance under the market principles, based on the Ouen or Õen (aid) consumption in Japan. The meaning of consumption has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, aid consumption is increasing. This means helping local restaurants and producers by willfully and proactively buying and consuming their services and products. This is a favorable form of new social assistance and the result of strong marketing and market functions. The penetration of market forces may surpass pure altruistic behavior such as donations and gifts, by creating new market-linked …

Orexin A, an endogenous peptide involved in several functions including reward, acts via activation of orexin receptors OX1 and OX2, Gq-coupled GPCRs. We examined the effect of a selective OX1 agonist, OXA (17-33) on cytosolic calcium concentration, [Ca2+ ]i, in neurons of nucleus accumbens, an important area in the reward circuit. OXA (17-33) increased [Ca2+ ]i in a dose-dependent manner; the effect was prevented by SB-334867, a selective OX1 receptors antagonist. In Ca2+-free saline, the OXA (17-33)-induced increase in [Ca2+ ]i was not affected by pretreatment …

Impaired Wound Healing, Fibrosis, And Cancer: The Paradigm Of Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa, Grace Tartaglia, Qingqing Cao, Zachary Padron, Andrew P. South
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB) is a devastating skin blistering disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding type VII collagen (C7), leading to epidermal fragility, trauma-induced blistering, and long term, hard-to-heal wounds. Fibrosis develops rapidly in RDEB skin and contributes to both chronic wounds, which emerge after cycles of repetitive wound and scar formation, and squamous cell carcinoma—the single biggest cause of death in this patient group. The molecular pathways disrupted in a broad spectrum of fibrotic disease are also disrupted in RDEB, and squamous cell carcinomas arising in RDEB are thus far molecularly indistinct from other sub-types of …
Chronic Exercise And Memory Interference, Lisa Vogelgesang
Chronic Exercise And Memory Interference, Lisa Vogelgesang
Honors Theses
This online study examined whether chronic exercise is associated with attenuated memory interference. Sixty-three healthy, young adults completed an interference task (AB/AC-paradigm) and self-reported the number of days and minutes a day they engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. We found that proactive interference (PI), but not retroactive interference (RI), occurred but none of the exercise modalities significantly impacted PI. Future studies should evaluate whether different interference tasks display diverse sensitivities to exercise-induced changes in memory interference. Moreover, other potential modulating factors, such as the duration and intensity of the exercise should be controlled for.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is linked to negative reproductive and developmental effects in humans and animals. Because BaP is carcinogenic, and its continued presence in the environment allows it to be inhaled and ingested, better understanding of the effects of BaP is needed. To determine the behavioral effects of BaP exposure, zebrafish were used as a model. Wild-type zebrafish (5D) underwent two separate 21-day dietary exposures to 2.5 and 25 μg BaP/g fish to compare how BaP exposure affects locomotor activity. Following the dietary exposure, fish were mated to obtain and raise the F1 generation to …
