Since early 2020, the world has witnessed the unprecedented accomplishments of the scientific community in the fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In the meantime, we also learned valuable lessons and recognized the challenges that hindered our successes. In this article, we synthesize the ideas discussed at the ASM Virtual Symposium: Microbial Science Research in the Post-COVID Environment on 10 November 2020. We propose three new approaches that microbiology researchers can embrace to overcome these challenges. Moreover, we suggest broad systematic changes to focus on social impacts, teamwork, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. We believe these values are …

Myoepitheliomas are rare benign tumours that affect the exocrine glands and are sporadically located in the salivary glands. The most common location of myoepithelioma in the oral cavity is the parotid gland and it is seldom encountered in the palate. The diagnosis of this entity is challenging since its clinical presentation may resemble those of more common neoplasms, rendering a complex histopathological diagnosis. The aim of the present case report is to describe an unusual case of myoepithelioma of the soft palate in a male patient, which developed as an asymptomatic, slowly growing mass. The tumour was assessed with histopathological …

To achieve a satisfactory outcome for transposed impacted teeth, the esthetic assessment and functional rehabilitation should be considered from both the orthodontic and periodontic perspective. In this case, a stepwise approach was used for both surgical uncovering and orthodontic treatment to manage the soft and hard tissue of transposed high canine. The case involved a girl aged 11 years and 7 months with bilateral high impacted canine–lateral incisor transposition. The impacted canines were first uncovered with the closed eruption technique and then moved horizontally to a normal sequence in the arch. Apically repositioned flap surgery was then performed, and the …

Maxillary canine is an essential part of teeth for smile esthetic and function. Orthodontic treatment for patient with impacted maxillary canine is considered to be more complex and require good biomechanical control during traction. This case report describes an orthodontic treatment of a 17-year old female patient with unilateral maxillary canine impaction on the left side. Orthodontic traction was used to guide the canine into normal occlusion. The orthodontic treatment had been completed within 19 months and successfully obtained favourable esthetic and stable occlusion.

Purpose: Accurate space discrepancy evaluation is important in treatment planning. Straight-line segments and brass wire method are the most common methods in arch length assessment. However, using segments causes underestimation, while more reliable brass wire method shows lower reproducibility. The aim of our study is (1) to compare the difference between conventional segmental distance method (SD) and a new method, ideal arch form (IA), and (2) to assess the reproducibility and reliability of two methods by means of digital models. Materials and methods: Thirty sets of digital dental models presented full permanent dentition and Angle’s Class III malocclusion were included. …

Literature describing patients with concomitant COVID-19 infection with acute appendicitis in pediatric patients is growing, and understanding the clinical picture of such patients is relevant in their treatment. We report 3 male children who were surgically treated for acute appendicitis and had concomitant SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our first patient was a 12-year-old male who presented with symptoms indicative of appendicitis but no respiratory symptoms associated with COVID-19 (eg cough, shortness of breath). Laboratory evaluation revealed leukopenia and an elevated C-reactive protein; imaging was consistent with acute appendicitis and an acute pulmonary viral infection. Though he lacked diffuse peritonitis on physical examination …

Individuals living in underserved neighborhoods face significant barriers to getting fresh produce. It has been extensively researched that providing individuals with fresh fruits and vegetables can have a positive physical and mental impact on the lives of individuals in underserved neighborhoods and the lives of their families. Unfortunately, individuals who reside in such neighborhoods are often viewed as not being motivated to consume fresh fruits and vegetables, even where barriers to eating such foods are removed. This study aims to determine whether, in the COVID-19 era, individuals in underserved neighborhoods would consume fresh fruits if presented with them in an …

Emergency Department - Community Partnership To Coordinate Older Adults Falls Prevention Programs, Suzanne Ryer, Ann Gallo, Adam Perry, Michael Malone
Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
Abstract
Falls and injurious falls are common causes for emergency department visits in older adults. Prior literature describing ED care of older adults has focused on the patients' injuries and their ED care. There is a gap in the literature describing community- based falls prevention strategies and interventions deployed by community organizations, beyond health systems. We identified variation in approaches to older adults among paramedic programs from one community to the next within Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. We also noted no organized falls prevention program spanning all communities, emergency departments and health systems in the county. We describe the implementation of …

Viral-associated respiratory infectious diseases are one of the most prominent subsets of respiratory failures, known as viral respiratory infections (VRI). VRIs are proceeded by an infection caused by viruses infecting the respiratory system. For the past 100 years, viral associated respiratory epidemics have been the most common cause of infectious disease worldwide. Due to several drawbacks of the current anti-viral treatments, such as drug resistance generation and non-targeting of viral proteins, the development of novel nanotherapeutic or nano-vaccine strategies can be considered essential. Due to their specific physical and biological properties, nanoparticles hold promising opportunities for both anti-viral treatments and …

Higher rates of poor cognitive performance are known to prevail among persons with tinnitus in all age groups. However, no study has explored the association between tinnitus and early-onset dementia. We hypothesize that tinnitus may precede or occur concurrently with subclinical or early onset dementia in adults younger than 65 years of age. This case–control study used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, identifying 1308 patients with early-onset dementia (dementia diagnosed before 65 years of age) and 1308 matched controls. We used multivariable logistic regressions to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for prior tinnitus among patients with dementia …

MYCN activation is a hallmark of advanced neuroblastoma (NB) and a known master regulator of metabolic reprogramming, favoring NB adaptation to its microenvironment. We found that the expression of the main regulators of the molecular clock loops is profoundly disrupted in MYCN-amplified NB patients, and this disruption independently predicts poor clinical outcome. MYCN induces the expression of clock repressors and downregulates the one of clock activators by directly binding to their promoters. Ultimately, MYCN attenuates the molecular clock by suppressing BMAL1 expression and oscillation, thereby promoting cell survival. Reestablishment of the activity of the clock activator RORα via its genetic …

Tuberculosis (TB) is the most deadly infectious disease globally. Although most individuals achieve a cure, a substantial portion develop multi-drug resistant TB which is exceedingly difficult to treat, and the number of effective agents is dwindling. Development of new anti-tubercular medications is imperative to combat existing drug resistance and accelerate global eradication of TB. Pretomanid (PA-824) represents one of the newest drug classes (ie, nitroimidazooxazines) approved in 2019 by the United States Food and Drug Administration as part of a multi-drug regimen (with bedaquiline and linezolid, BPaL) and recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to treat extensively-resistant (XR-TB) and …
