Performance Effects Of A Strength Training Program In Collegiate Runners, Alyssa Younker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that lower limb asymmetries can negatively impact performance and risk of injury. However, there is little research on the effects of lower limb asymmetry on running performance, nor the effects of strength training on lower limb asymmetry in runners. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between jumping ability and asymmetry and long distance running performance, as well as to determine the performance effects a strength training program has on collegiate runners. Data from athlete monitoring of 10 collegiate distance runners and 6 sprinters were analyzed. Athletes (Distance Runners n = 10, Sprinters n …

Concurrent Primary Cardiac Tumors In A High-Risk Patient Presenting With Tamponade., Jay V Gopal, Lauren Crowley, Shawn M Quinn, Timothy S Misselbeck, Joseph B Zackary

Department of Emergency Medicine

Primary cardiac tumors are rare, particularly in the elderly population. The patient described in this report presented with symptoms of dyspnea on exertion, leg swelling, and weight gain and was found to have two histologically distinct cardiac masses: atrial myxoma with concurrent aortic fibroelastoma. Given her history of cirrhosis and end-stage renal disease, the patient was a poor surgical candidate but opted for excision of both masses. The patient eventually succumbed to her cirrhosis six weeks after presentation. In this report, we advocate for further research into medical management for the unique presentation of concurrent primary cardiac tumors in high-operative-risk …

Synchronous Primary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma And Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Case Report Highlighting "Lymphoma First Approach", Rahim Dhanani, Ambreen Abdullah Unar, Muhammad Hassan Danish, Hamdan Ahmed Pasha, Ummiya Tahir, Mubasher Ikram

Section of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of all thyroid carcinomas and accounts for up to 90% of all thyroid malignancies. It is the most indolent form of the disease and has an excellent prognosis. On the other hand, Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare entity accounting for only about 1% to 5% of all thyroid malignancies and only 2% of extranodal lymphomas. Synchronous PTC and PTL is a very rare condition and only a few cases have been reported in the literature up till now. We report one such case in a 52-year-old lady who was …

Community-Driven Data Revolution Is Feasible In Developing Countries: Experiences From An Integrated Health Information And Surveillance System In Kenya, Anthony Ngugi, Gijs Walraven, James Orwa, Adelaide Lusambili, Maureen Kimani, Stanley Luchters Aug 2021

Community-Driven Data Revolution Is Feasible In Developing Countries: Experiences From An Integrated Health Information And Surveillance System In Kenya, Anthony Ngugi, Gijs Walraven, James Orwa, Adelaide Lusambili, Maureen Kimani, Stanley Luchters

Population Health, East Africa

Over the period of the Millennium Development Goals (2000-15), it became clear that there was a pressing need and an increasing capacity for a ‘data revolution’ to inform the global health development agenda. In most developing countries, data on key indicators were collected through laborious and retrospective surveys that were as much as five years out-of-date, or through passive reporting systems that relied on routinely generated health facility data. Gaps in the primary data were filled by modelled estimates, which often relied on inadequate assumptions.

Re-Aim Evaluation Of Workplace Weight Management Interventions: A Systematic Review, Adrienne Gothard

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Overweight/Obesity is a major public health concern that affects nearly a third of the world’s population. In addition to personal health effects such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes, obesity can take a toll on an employer’s bottom line, specifically healthcare costs and absenteeism. Many employers promote intervention programs targeted at lifestyle and behavioral factors to improve workforce health. A 2016 systematic review by Weerasekara et al. compared several of these intervention programs based on the effectiveness of the program, measured in participant’s weight changes from baseline to post-intervention. While this information can be valuable to employers who are interested …

California's Master Plan For Aging, Health Reimagined: A Case For Seniors To Age-In-Place, Remonia A. Bowie

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

In 2021 Worldwide, communities face a singular yet common challenge; and this is the significant aging of their senior adult populations. Current evidence from the literature suggests that older adults prefer to stay in their homes as they age. However, the facilitators and challenges older people encounter in realizing their aging goals have been inadequately addressed by the current body of literature given the projected increase in the number of older people in the United States preferring to age from their homes. Aging adults are vulnerable to daily frustration, which could negatively impact their aging process. However, knowledge of …

Vallely, Christopher Morgan, Grace Kariwiga

Population Health, East Africa

Introduction: Left untreated, sexually transmitted and genital infections (henceforth STIs) in pregnancy can lead to serious adverse outcomes for mother and child. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has among the highest prevalence of curable STIs including syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis, and high neonatal mortality rates. Diagnosis and treatment of these STIs in PNG rely on syndromic management. Advances in STI diagnostics through point-of-care (PoC) testing using GeneXpert technology hold promise for resource-constrained countries such as PNG. This paper describes the planned economic evaluation of a cluster-randomised cross-over trial comparing antenatal PoC testing and immediate treatment of curable STIs …

Population Health, East Africa

Background: Timely diagnosis and early initiation of life-saving antiretroviral therapy are critical factors in preventing mortality among HIV-infected infants. However, resource-limited settings experience numerous challenges associated with centralised laboratory-based testing, including low rates of testing, complex sample referral pathways and unacceptably long turnaround times for results. Point-of-care (POC) HIV testing for HIVexposed infants can enable same-day communication of results and early treatment initiation for HIV-infected infants. However, complex operational issues and service integration can limit utility and must be well understood prior to implementation. We explored and documented the challenges and enabling factors in implementing the POC Xpert® HIV-1 …

The incidence of congenital heart defect (CHD) has increased over the past fifty years, partly attributed to routine fetal anatomical examination by sonography during obstetric care and improvements in ultrasound technology and technique. Fetal findings on ultrasound in addition to maternal biomarkers are the backbone of first- and second-trimester screening for common genetic conditions, namely aneuploidy. Since the introduction of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) using next-generation sequencing to sequence cell-free fetal DNA, the detection rate of common trisomies as well as sex chromosomal aneuploidies have markedly increased. As the use of NIPT continues to broaden, the best means of incorporating …
