Returning To Our Roots: Re-Introducing Art Back Into Occupational Therapy, Vivi Trinh
Returning To Our Roots: Re-Introducing Art Back Into Occupational Therapy, Vivi Trinh
Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
The usage of arts and crafts played a significant role in the fruition of the profession, but as it adopted more medically- and evidence-based treatment methods, most practitioners steered away from arts and crafts. The overall purpose of this project was to promote the use of art in OT as well as learn about the current use of art in OT through discussions held with practicing and retired occupational therapists and OT students with fieldwork experience. A portion of the project includes conducting a needs assessment at Urban Street Angels (USA), a community-based facility in downtown San Diego, CA that …

The Case For Shifting Clinical Dentistry Toward Regenerative Biological Treatment Using Stem Cells: A Life-Changing Impact On The Profession’S Future, Merna Gress
International Programs
The conventional current procedures targeting the periodontal treatment for the diseased teeth and gums are based on arresting the destruction of these supporting structures and limiting the number of bacteria present. However, an ideal treatment would be regenerative in nature and should be accompanied with the reconstruction of these periodontal tissues back to normal. The application of Regenerative Dentistry is achieved through using the concept of cell and molecular biology to empower dental treatments that target a repair process for oral tissues instead of utilizing synthetic materials. One of the main applications of this concept is adult tissue-derived Mesenchymal Stem …

Integrating Digital Health Technology To Alleviate Caregiver Burden, Patricia Ann Hunt
Applied Research Projects
The elder population in our country is growing at an exponential pace. Studies have shown that elders who are aged 80 years and older are projected to suffer from age related issues such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, and osteoporosis and will need assistance with Long Term Services and Support (LTSS). Additionally, many elders are also projected to suffer from more severe chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, and heart related illnesses. Because many of these elders are aging in place, residing in their own homes, they will require the services of at home assistance, which high probability will be a neighbor, …

Promoting Leisure And Social Participation For Seniors In An Assisted Living Facility, Macy Clark, Becki Cohill, Susan Macdermott, Karen Park
Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Seniors in assisted living facilities (ALF) experience a decrease in leisure activity participation (Knecht-Sabres et al., 2020). This decrease could be due to the changes in the social, cultural, and physical environments and the loss of daily roles and routines (Lamarre et al., 2019). Participation in social group activities improves quality of life and provides many physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional benefits (Barnes et al., 2008; Horowitz & Vanner, 2010). Participation in group activities offers seniors a sense of community, purpose, belonging, and friendship (Dare et al., 2018). However, group activities offered in ALF may be generic and not individualized to …

Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a prevalent injury that affects millions of youth and young adults every year (McKeithan et al., 2019). The sequelae associated with an SRC can interfere with a student athletes’ ability to participate in school, return to play, and perform daily tasks (DeMatteo et al., 2018). Common practice in concussion management highlights the significance of getting individuals back to engaging in all areas of their lives; and this is consistent with the emphasis on participation by occupational therapy (OT) practitioners (DeMatteo et al., 2018). Despite the beneficial role that OT may offer, not only is there limited …

Exploring Sensory Processing & Inclusivity Within A Fitness Gym Environment, Deveshma Maharaj, Karen Park, Becki Cohill, Susan Macdermott
Summer 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
An individual’s sensory processing involves the reception, modulation, integration, and organization of sensory stimuli, as well as behavioral responses to sensory input (Dunn, 2001). Adults with sensory processing challenges may come across troubles with completing routines and tasks for work, social participation, and leisure (STAR Institute for SPD, n.d.). Since most individuals with these sensory processing challenges have struggled with symptoms continuously, they are likely to encounter secondary effects such as depression, underachievement, and social isolation (STAR Institute for SPD, n.d.). Adults with sensory processing deficits may experience difficulties with establishing their role in society, maintaining social support systems, and …

Robotic Bronchoscopy For Peripheral Pulmonary Lesion Biopsy: Evidence-Based Review Of The Two Platforms, Abhishek Kumar, Jose D. Caceres, Siddharthan Vaithilingham, Gurshan Sandhu, Nikhil K. Meena
School of Medicine Faculty Research
Despite many advancements in recent years for the sampling of peripheral pulmonary lesions, the diagnostic yield remains low. Initial excitement about the current electromagnetic navigation platforms has subsided as the real-world data shows a significantly lower diagnostic sensitivity of ~70%. “CT-to-body divergence” has been identified as a major limitation of this modality. In-tandem use of the ultrathin bronchoscope and radial endobronchial ultrasound probe has yielded only comparable results, attributable to the limited peripheral reach, device maneuverability, stability, and distractors like atelectasis. As such, experts have identified three key steps in peripheral nodule sampling—navigation (to the lesion), confirmation (of the correct …
