Breathing Wildfire Smoke Can Affect The Brain And Sperm, As Well As The Lungs, Luke Montrose, Adam Schuller
Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Wildfires burning in the western U.S. are sending smoke into communities far from the fires themselves, creating hazardous air for days or weeks at a time. A lot of people are wondering: What does breathing all that smoke do to our bodies?
Wildfire smoke is a mix of chemicals and tiny particles that are small enough to evade the body’s defenses and directly affect the lungs. But the damage may not stop there.
As environmental toxicologists, we have been investigating the health effects of wildfire smoke on humans, including on parts of the body that you might not expect: sperm …

In current medical practice when a patient feels symptoms he/she would consult the doctor. The doctor then gives medication in a one-fits-all fashion. However, recent genetics studies had shown that different genetic makeup can results in different effects on medication, so the medication should be customed for every individual. The main idea of “personalized medicine” is to provide the right intervention including medication to the right patient at the right time and dose. With this approach, the medication paradigm would shift from curative to preventive. The rise of personalized medicine had been possible because the information from ever-increasing biomolecular (proteomics, …

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications
Our previous study has revealed that exosomes from adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) promote angiogenesis in subcutaneously transplanted gels by delivery of microRNA-31 (miR-31) which targets factor inhibiting hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (FIH1) in recipient cells. Here we hypothesized that ASC exosomes alleviate ischemic diseases through miR-31/FIH1/hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) signaling pathway. Exosomes from ASCs were characterized with nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and immunoblotting analysis for exosomal markers. Results from immunoblotting and laser imaging of ischemic mouse hindlimb revealed that miR-31 enriched ASC exosomes inhibited FIH1 expression and enhanced the blood perfusion, respectively. These effects were impaired when using miR-31-depleted exosomes. Immunohistochemistry …

BACKGROUND: The lack of SARS-CoV-2 antigen surveillance testing in the pediatric population has inhibited accurate infection and hospitalization prevalence estimates. We aim to report the estimated prevalence of and risk factors for COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission across the three United States (US) waves in one of the largest pediatric healthcare systems in the nation.
METHODS: Retrospective electronic health record (EHR) review of all COVID-19 surveillance data among children aged 0-19 years seeking healthcare at one pediatric healthcare system that serves predominantly Medicaid-dependent families from 1 March 2020 to 31 March 2021. COVID-19 infection status (Y/N), …

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is considered an emergent source of viral hepatitis worldwide, with an increasing burden of jaundice, liver failure, extrahepatic illnesses, and deaths in developed countries. With the scarcity of data from efficient animal models, there are still open-ended questions about designing new models to study pathogenesis, types, virology, and evolution of these viruses. With an emphasis on available data and updates, there is still enough information to understand the HEV life cycle, pathogen interaction with the host, and the valuation of the role of vaccine and new anti-HEV therapies. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the …
