Bone wax is the most commonly used hemostatic agent in surgery; however, it is non-absorbable and may act as a nidus of infection. Thus, new hemostatic agents that are absorbable and have antibiotic effects are needed. In this study, we assessed the hemostatic ability, bioabsorption, and local antibiotic and anti-inflammatory effects of a newly developed poly(ethylene glycol–propylene glycol) (PEG-PPG) copolymer containing gentamicin (PEG-PPGg) in a calvarial defect rat model. A total of 100 Sprague Dawley rats were used in this study. Twenty were used to determine time to hemostasis and bioabsorption of PEG-PPGg. The remaining rats were assigned to four …

Endometritis is caused by endometrial cell injury and chronic inflammation of uteri infected by pathogens, leading to reproductive failure in dairy cows. Changes of the endometrial immune response regulates the development of endometritis. In a recent discovery, exosomes acted as a functional regulator secreted by a variety of cells, however, its regulatory mechanism in the local immune response of the uteri is still unclear. In this study, flow cytometry was performed to identify the increased number of T lymphocytes, namely Tc cells, in the uteri with endometritis while the Th and Treg cells decreased very significantly. Moreover, the functional marker …

Background
Syphilis is a sexually-transmitted infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum. Cases of primary and secondary syphilis are on the rise in the United States, with a 14.4% increase in new cases noted from 2017 to 2018 and an escalation of 71% between the years 2014 and 2018. Fulfilling its nickname of “the great imitator,” oral manifestations of syphilis may mimic a variety of infectious, neoplastic, or immune-mediated processes, both clinically and histopathologically. This large spectrum of appearances can create a diagnostic challenge to the clinician and/or pathologist, leading to delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis.

The number of articles related to antimicrobial stewardship published each year has increased significantly over the last decade. Keeping up with the literature, particularly the most innovative, well-designed, or applicable to one's own practice area, can be challenging. The Southeastern Research Group Endeavor (SERGE-45) network reviewed antimicrobial stewardship-related, peer-reviewed literature from 2020 that detailed actionable interventions. The top 13 publications were summarized following identification using a modified Delphi technique. This article highlights the selected interventions and may serve as a key resource for teaching and training, and to identify novel or optimized stewardship opportunities within one's institution.

Aim and Background: It is estimated that up to 20% of patients coming for elective surgery are smokers and carry a risk of perioperative complications. Though smoking cessation and its impact on perioperative outcome are widely investigated worldwide we were unable to find any data in Pakistan. The objective of the study is to determine the impact of the duration of smoking cessation before elective surgery on intraoperative hemodynamics and postoperative pain in Pakistani population.
Methods: It was a prospective cohort study conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi, Pakistan, for one-year duration. A total of 260 patients scheduled …

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are exceedingly common in non-coding loci, and while they are significantly associated with a myriad of diseases, their specific impact on cellular dysfunction remains unclear. Here, we show that when exposed to external stressors, the presence of risk SNPs in the 9p21.3 coronary artery disease (CAD) risk locus increases endothelial monolayer and microvessel dysfunction. Endothelial cells (ECs) derived from induced pluripotent stem cells of patients carrying the risk haplotype (R/R WT) differentiated similarly to their non-risk and isogenic knockout (R/R KO) counterparts. Monolayers exhibited greater permeability and reactive oxygen species signaling when the risk haplotype was …

School-Based Sex Education In The United States And Its Association With Sexual And Reproductive Health Outcomes, 2000-2020, Priscilla M. Lopez
Dissertations and Theses
Background: There are significant sexual and reproductive health disparities in the United States (US). A significant proportion of sexual health disparities among adolescents is likely due in-part to inadequate school-based sex education. Sex education encourages sustainable and informed sexual behavior and has the potential reach adolescents prior to sexual debut and throughout the years at highest risk for adverse sexual health outcomes. However, the way in which sex education is defined and operationalized, as described in the literature, varies substantially, which may lead to wide variation in implementation in schools and this might explain the disparities seen. State-level sex …

Thiamine responsive megaloblastic anemia (TRMA) also known as Rogers syndrome is a rare entity inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder. It consists of a pentad of diabetes-mellitus, megaloblastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia and sensory-neural hearing loss. The defect occurs due to mutations in SLC19A2 gene resulting in the deficiency of a thiamine transporter proteins which prevents the transport of thiamine in to the cells and tissues. Here we report a 13 year old boy with megaloblastic anemia, sensory-neural deafness and young onset diabetes mellitus who presented with generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Diagnosis was based on clinical features and a rapid response to …

Intermittent fasting (IF) can facilitate neurodegenerative, neuroadaptive and neuroprotective processes leading to profound effects on cognition and dementias. The impact that IF has on the central nervous system is still not fully known. Several factors come into likely effect including changes in energy metabolism, oxidative damage, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and functional changes related to various neurotransmitters and hormones. During IF ketones are produced in large quantities and the brain consumes these for energy. The presence of ketone bodies increases the expression of the genes for brain derived neurotrophic factor which has a powerful effect on dementia and cognition. Brain derived …
