Utilising A Systematic Review-Based Approach To Create A Database Of Individual Participant Data For Meta- And Network Meta-Analyses: The Release Database Of Aphasia After Stroke, Release Collaborators, Jackie Hinckley

HPD Articles

Background

Collation of aphasia research data across settings, countries and study designs using big data principles will support analyses across different language modalities, levels of impairment, and therapy interventions in this heterogeneous population. Big data approaches in aphasia research may support vital analyses, which are unachievable within individual trial datasets. However, we lack insight into the requirements for a systematically created database, the feasibility and challenges and potential utility of the type of data collated.

Aim

To report the development, preparation and establishment of an internationally agreed aphasia after stroke research database of individual participant data (IPD) to facilitate planned …

Assessment Of Antimicrobial Pharmacokinetics Curricula Across Schools And Colleges Of Pharmacy In The United States, Gary Fong, Elias B. Chahine, Julie Ann Justo, Navaneeth Narayanan, Emily L. Heil, Kayla R. Stover, Jonathan C. Cho, Zachary N. Jenkins, Conan Macdougall

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction

Advances in technology and understanding of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationships have prompted guideline updates and advances in precision dosing, but the role of clinical pharmacokinetics (PK) in pharmacy education remains inconsistent. Previous surveys of pharmacy school PK curricula revealed large variations in content, integration, and teaching tools but did not focus on antimicrobials or details of andragogy used.

Objective

Identify how antimicrobial PK is taught in pharmacy curricula across the United States, as well as instructor perceptions of current practices.

Methods

An online survey was distributed to 118 pharmacy programs across the United States in 2018. This 30-minute questionnaire covered curriculum …

A Case Of Penile Fracture With Bilateral Corporal Injury And Complete Urethral Disruption, Brett Watson, Samantha Kraemer, Bradley Rosenberg

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction: Penile fracture with bilateral corporal rupture and complete urethral disruption is an uncommon injury, with approximately 60 cases reported in the literature. Case: A 54-year-old man presented with penile pain, ecchymosis, and detumescence, as well as urethral bleeding after blunt trauma sustained during vaginal intercourse. Clinical diagnosis of penile fracture was made and he was taken to the operating room for penile exploration. Complete transection of the urethra and bilateral disruptions of the corpora cavernosa were identified in the proximal penile shaft. The corpora were repaired with 3-0 vicryl. Primary urethroplasty was then performed using 4-0 PDS. Foley catheter …

This exploratory qualitative study aimed to identify sociocultural and intergenerational aspects of perception and practices in child feeding among quilombola women, members of maroon communities in Brazil. A focus group with 12 mothers and another group with four grandmothers of children under five years of age were conducted in a rural quilombola community in the State of Goiás, Brazil. The data were analyzed with thematic content analysis, yielding four central themes and respective subthemes, which were then represented in a socioecological conceptual model with four levels of influence on child feeding as the outcome. Theme 1 dealt with the reasons …

Assessment Of Sewage Workers’ Exposure To Hazardous Materials In Iraq: Sewage Workers Exposure And Hazardous Materials, Estabraq Alwasiti

Iraqi National Journal of Medicine

Background:Sewage workers, who maintain the sewage system and provide an essential service for public health protection, may come in direct contact with sewage hazards which then may induce DNA damage and oxidative stress. The aim of this studyis to assess the level of nitric oxide, homocysteine, 8 OHdG, and vitamin s A & E in the plasma of sewage workers for different periods of exposure. Results:Nitric oxide, vitamin A, and vitamin E showed a significant reduction in sewage workers when compared with anon-exposed control group. However, homocysteine and 8 OHdGlevels were increased in sewage workers when compared with thenon-exposed control group. Conclusions:Sew …

Wide-Awake Flexor Tendon Repair Under Tumescent Injection: Flexor Tendon Repair Under Tumescent Injection, Hanan Abid, Sabah Naji

Iraqi National Journal of Medicine

Background. Flexor tendon injuries are frequent, due to variable hand activities, and the repair is challenging to hand surgeons, especially in zone II, because of the coexistence of two tendons within a tight fibro-osseous tunnel. Flexor tendon repair under tumescent infiltration provides anesthesia and a bloodless field so that no tourniquet or sedation is needed._x000D_ Aim of the study. The goal of this study was to identify a surgical adjustment and intraoperative total active movement examination of the repaired tendon so that no gapping is formed, and smooth gliding is obtained, avoiding tendon rupture and producing an optimal range of …

How Modest Sonographic Training Changed Outcomes Of Critical Cases: Letter To Editor, Mazin Al-Hamdany Oct 2021

How Modest Sonographic Training Changed Outcomes Of Critical Cases: Letter To Editor, Mazin Al-Hamdany

Iraqi National Journal of Medicine

Most physicians consider sonography as a radiologist’s concern and still prefer to use clinical parameters or traditional tools to reach a prognosis or to make a delayed diagnosis if other and more sophisticated tools are not readily available. Point of care sonography is nowadays spreading as a multi-utility tool in most specialties because of the failure of traditional tools and impracticality of using sophisticated tools. Ultrasound machines are nowadays cheaper and more portable besides being fast, being reusable, safe and promise a steep curve of learning. I want here to share some of its applications made by junior anesthesia trainees. …

Detection Of Breast Cancer In African American Women Using Walk-In Mammography, Munachi Nwosu Oct 2021

Detection Of Breast Cancer In African American Women Using Walk-In Mammography, Munachi Nwosu

Dissertations

Abstract

Problem: Breast cancer is a life-threatening condition, in which the prognosis could potentially worsen with a delay in the detection and commencement of treatment. Scheduling patients for mammograms continues to allow for long wait times that exist in screening mammography. Lower rates of participation in scheduled screening mammograms contributes to the increased rate of advanced breast cancer diagnosis that exit in African American women and threatens their health outcomes. The purpose of this project was to implement walk-in mammography to increase participation for early breast cancer detection.

Methods: An observational descriptive design with a retrospective chart review. A PDSA …

Output Consistency Scale To Standardize Ostomate Output Description In Clinical Practice And Studies, Lisa Whisenhunt, Linda Xu, Fan Yang, Jacques Izard

Food for Health: Publications

Stool descriptors have become popular due to the large diffusion of the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) via clinical studies, clinical trials, and social media. The applications have been numerous and centered around standardization of terminology that can be used by health care professionals and patients alike, as well as individuals interested in their wellness and the associated partners in the wellness industry. For a portion of the population, the digestive content is rerouted to an external manufactured pouch or bag, making the use of the BSFS visual descriptors of stool difficult. From day one post-resection surgery, ostomates are challenged …
