Background Proximal humerus fractures are the third most common fracture in older adults. Because of the aging population, the incidence of these fractures and their impact will continue to grow. With advancement in treatment options for proximal humeral fractures, the aim of this study was to evaluate the trends in acute management of proximal humerus fractures to determine how definitive treatment has changed over the past decade in patients older than 65 years. Methods Using a commercially available database, patient records were queried from 2010 to 2019 for the incidence of proximal humerus fractures. For each individual year, data were …

Burnout In The Nursing Profession: Extant Knowledge And Future Directions For Research And Practice, Sara Labelle
Nursing Communication
Burnout is a psychological state resulting from prolonged psychological or emotional job stress, and is a culmination of three factors: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Due to the nature of the “people-work” they must constantly perform, along with a highly stressful and unpredictable work environment, nurses have alarmingly high rates of burnout among members of their profession. Given the importance of research on burnout to understanding the context-specific stressors and challenges of nursing, this review offers a synthesis of research published in the last decade in both nursing and communication journals, with an emphasis on discussing opportunities for …

Nursing Communication
Health care in the U.S. is a dynamic and demanding field faced with many challenges such as an aging population, coupled with increases in chronic diseases and conditions (e.g., heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis). Addressing these challenges involves ongoing communication among numerous constituents comprised of health care providers (physicians, nurses, therapists), health administrators, patients, family members, and/or other caregivers. Part of managing a chronic illness, for example, is coordinating information surrounding the condition such as disclosing health information to others. The purpose of this article is twofold: First, we examine current “disclosure” research (referred to …

Awake Craniotomy For Resection Of Intracranial Meningioma: First Case Series From A Low- And Middle-Income Country, Saqib Kamran Bakhshi, Noyan Jawed, Faraz Shafiq, Ather Enam
Section of Neurosurgery
Introduction: Awake craniotomy (AC) has emerged as a better modality for resection of intra-axial brain tumors. The advantages are not just related to the preservation of neurological function, but also include early recovery, short hospital stay and possibly lower costs. However, data on AC for meningioma resection is deficient, likely because of concerns related to intra-operative pain and blood loss.
Methods: All patients who underwent AC, using awake through-out technique for resection of meningioma, during the last five years, were included in the study. Non-probability consecutive sampling technique was employed. Variables for demographics, and details of diagnosis and surgical procedure …
