Occlusive Retinal Vasculitis Secondary To Sjogren’S Syndrome: A Case Report And Review, Lynn Finnegan Od, Danielle Kalberer Od

Background: To bring attention to the potential and serious ophthalmic sequalae of Sjogren’s syndrome, specifically occlusive retinal vasculitis.

Case: A 70-year-old male patient without previous ocular pathology presented with acute onset, bilateral, painless vision loss. Fundus evaluation revealed extensive retinal occlusive disease with bilateral disc edema, cystoid macular edema, and diffuse phlebitis. The patient was admitted, received a full systemic work-up and was carefully co-managed by ophthalmology, neurology, infectious disease, vascular surgery, dermatology, rheumatology and medicine. Evaluation supported a leading diagnosis of Sjogren’s syndrome associated vasculitis.

Background: A homonymous hemianopsia visual field defect is defined as vision loss on the same side of the vertical midline in both eyes. Although the vast majority are caused by an ischemic stroke, other neurologic etiologies must be considered and ruled out. This case highlights the importance of a rapid and thorough investigation of a patient’s symptoms using both clinical examination and imaging to reduce the risk of permanent complications and potential fatality.

Background: Choroidal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. Purpose: To analyze the cohort of clinical patients seen during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown at Emory Eye Center in comparison with prior weeks.

Method: We conducted a retrospective chart review from three outpatient clinical sites over a period of eighteen weeks, which covered pre-COVID-19 dates as well as the dates of when our clinics were closed near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We utilized data from providers assigned to daily triage coverage for in-person exams. Primary diagnosis and visit type data were extracted to look for trends and commonalities among urgent or time-sensitive patients.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to pilot test the effectiveness of a diabetes self-management program for African Americans with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) in a group format in a faith-based setting. The rationale for the study was to create appropriate diabetes education in response to the growing diabetes prevalence among African Americans. Purpose: The purpose of this part of a larger study was to examine the self-reported flu/pneumonia coverage in individuals self-identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender

Methodology: A purposeful sample and select items from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey were utilized.

Findings: Findings included almost half of respondents indicating obtaining a flu shot or vaccine and approximately one-fourth of the respondents reported receiving a pneumonia shot/vaccine.

North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (NCI-AHEC) aims to develop the healthcare infrastructure by encouraging rural students to pursue healthcare professions. In light of rural healthcare shortages found in Indiana, they implemented a pipeline program, Successfully Training and Educating Pre-medical Students (STEPS). This program offers mentoring and educational assistance to pre-health-professional undergraduate students at Indiana University – Kokomo. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Purdue research team partnered with NCI-AHEC to conduct a completely virtual mixed method study that examined the initial impact of the STEPS program and made recommendations for improvement.
