Mental Health Disparities In Social Work Practice Of Minority Youth Offenders, Beverly Ann Rivera
Mental Health Disparities In Social Work Practice Of Minority Youth Offenders, Beverly Ann Rivera
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractA large number of minority youths placed in the juvenile justice system across the United States have mental health disorders. Most of these youths do not receive mental health services or support within the system, which increases risk factors such as undiagnosed and untreated mental illness and adverse outcomes such as recidivism. This action research sought to uncover whether mental health disparities in social work practice in the juvenile justice system were due to race and ethnicity and asked social workers to recommend strategies to improve mental health availability, access, and provision. Participants in the study were social workers who …

Site-Search Process For Synaptic Protein-Dna Complexes, Sridhar Vemulapalli, Mohtadin Hashemi, Yuri L. Lyubchenko
Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences
The assembly of synaptic protein-DNA complexes by specialized proteins is critical for bringing together two distant sites within a DNA molecule or bridging two DNA molecules. The assembly of such synaptosomes is needed in numerous genetic processes requiring the interactions of two or more sites. The molecular mechanisms by which the protein brings the sites together, enabling the assembly of synaptosomes, remain unknown. Such proteins can utilize sliding, jumping, and segmental transfer pathways proposed for the single-site search process, but none of these pathways explains how the synaptosome assembles. Here we used restriction enzyme SfiI, that requires the assembly of …

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by pathological deposition of misfolded self-protein amyloid beta (Aβ) which in kind facilitates tau aggregation and neurodegeneration. Neuroinflammation is accepted as a key disease driver caused by innate microglia activation. Recently, adaptive immune alterations have been uncovered that begin early and persist throughout the disease. How these occur and whether they can be harnessed to halt disease progress is unclear. We propose that self-antigens would induct autoreactive effector T cells (Teffs) that drive pro-inflammatory and neurodestructive immunity leading to cognitive impairments. Here, we investigated the role of effector immunity and …

INTRODUCTION: Uganda's district-level administrative units buttress the public healthcare system. In many districts, however, local capacity is incommensurate with that required to plan and implement quality health interventions. This study investigates how a district management strategy informed by local data and community dialogue influences health services.
METHODS: A 3-year randomised controlled trial (RCT) comprised of 16 Ugandan districts tested a management approach, Community and District-management Empowerment for Scale-up (CODES). Eight districts were randomly selected for each of the intervention and comparison areas. The approach relies on a customised set of data-driven diagnostic tools to identify and resolve health system bottlenecks. …

Crosstalk Between Staphylococcus Aureus And Innate Immunity: Focus On Immunometabolism, Christopher M. Horn, Tammy Kielian
Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of bacterial infections globally in both healthcare and community settings. The success of this bacterium is the product of an expansive repertoire of virulence factors in combination with acquired antibiotic resistance and propensity for biofilm formation. S. aureus leverages these factors to adapt to and subvert the host immune response. With the burgeoning field of immunometabolism, it has become clear that the metabolic program of leukocytes dictates their inflammatory status and overall effectiveness in clearing an infection. The metabolic flexibility of S. aureus offers an inherent means by which the pathogen could manipulate the …

Phase 1
Introduction: Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears are an extremely common orthopedic injury, with an incidence ranging from 39-52 per 100,000. Knee Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans are the gold standard for diagnosing ACL tears and their comorbidities, such as posterolateral corner injuries; the results of these scans determine the appropriate treatment needed for patients. There is evidence that machine learning can be used to automate the detection of pathology on MRI, and we hypothesize that we can train a neural network machine learning model to accurately interpret ACL injuries and posterolateral corner injuries.
Methods: We will be analyzing over 1000 …

Racial Disparities In Syringe Exchange Program Access In Kentucky, Ankur Bhargava
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Non-white Kentuckians use syringe exchange programs (SEPs) at lower rates than white Kentuckians. This analysis begins by documenting this disparity and then explores several potential causes. Access to SEPs is limited by law as only health departments may operate them. Areas of the state in which SEPs face political opposition are therefore underserved. A consequence of this legal limitation is distance to a SEP may be a barrier to access. Analysis of publicly available data indicates non-white drug users in Kentucky are located closer to syringe exchange programs in urban areas but farther away in rural areas. Proximity to a …

The Witness Project (WP) is an evidence-based breast cancer screening intervention that will be implemented in Whitehall, Ohio, at three different churches by the Franklin County Health Department. The WP will target African American women 50-74 years old who are non-compliant with current United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) breast cancer screening recommendations. African American women face disproportionately higher mortality rates from breast cancer when compared to other racial and ethnic groups in the United States and in Whitehall. African American women are less likely to discuss breast cancer and preventive screening services within their community. The WP …
When Disparities Become Deadly: Spatial Differences In Pm2.5 Levels Within The City Of Pomona, California, Pauline Bekkers
When Disparities Become Deadly: Spatial Differences In Pm2.5 Levels Within The City Of Pomona, California, Pauline Bekkers
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis discusses the disparities in particulate matter concentrations between different neighborhoods in the city of Pomona, California, and explores the historical, political and social factors that have shaped these spatial patterns. I argue that urban growth patterns in Pomona, which are historically marked by race and class segregation as a consequence of past discriminatory housing practices, have led to the disproportionate concentrations of air pollutants in low-income, Latino communities in South Pomona.
Due to the absence of a local air quality monitoring system, there is a lack of information about and understanding of how poor air quality may be …

Fostering Peer Evaluation Skills In Nursing Students, Lisa Dubose
Fostering Peer Evaluation Skills In Nursing Students, Lisa Dubose
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Nursing peer review is a professional practice in which nurses offer constructive, non-personal, practice-related feedback to fellow nurses. The use of nursing peer review has been recommended by the American Nurses Association (ANA 1988, 2014) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC 2008). Despite being recommended by professional organizations, the use of peer review in nursing has not been widely implemented. Evaluation of nursing colleagues has the potential to enhance professional nursing, both in practice and in nursing education.
Fostering the skills needed to provide peers with evaluative feedback might best be accomplished if the process is started during nursing …

The most diverse families of state spiders were Salticidae (64 species), Lycosidae (59 species), Araneidae (55 species), and Gnaphosidae (54 species). Twelve families had only a single representative species in the state. Additional taxa will surely be added to the checklist with future taxonomic studies incorporating molecular analyses and additional collecting. This updated checklist is intended to be of use to arachnologists, researchers, naturalists, professional biologists, and managers in determining the biodiversity for Arkansas. We have worked to insure that the taxonomy …

Morphology Of Rathke’S Glands In The Alligator Snapping Turtle, Macrochelys Temminckii (Chelonia: Chelydridae), Stanley E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
I examined the morphology of Rathke’s glands (RG) in the Alligator Snapping Turtle, Macrochelys temminckii, using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This species possesses 4 pairs of RG (i.e., an axillary and three inframarginals) that are embedded beneath marginal bones and are named primarily according to the anatomical location of their orifices. These holocrine-type, exocrine, integumentary glands are anatomically and ultrastructurally similar to one another. Each gland contains a single and highly vascularized secretory lobule, which is bounded by a thick tunic of asymmetrically-arranged striated muscle bundles. Two types of secretory vacuoles were identified within the holocrine cells …
