Expanding The Educational Network For Students With Autism: Partnering With School Librarians, Selena J. Layden, Amelia Anderson

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

School librarians play an important role in our public schools by supporting students through both formal and informal learning opportunities. All students have access to library services, including those who receive additional support through special education. Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in particular, may benefit from both the library environment and the knowledge and training specific to school librarians. Yet, school librarians frequently are not included as part of these students' educational teams. This study utilized a survey to discover the extent to which school librarians report providing services and supports to students with ASD, as well as the …

Post-Pandemic Privacy Law, Tiffany C. Li Jan 2021

Post-Pandemic Privacy Law, Tiffany C. Li

Law Faculty Scholarship

COVD-19, the global pandemic that began in 2019, altered how we live our lives in just about every way imaginable. Some of those changes were obvious-for example, those who were fortunate enough to be able to work from home began working online-while other changes were more subtle. The latter category included unprecedented levels of data collection by governments and organizations purporting to collect information that would help stop the pandemic's spread. Given the deadly nature of COVID-19, few would question any public health efforts, no matter their impact on privacy. However, the lack of attention to privacy issues during the …

N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Antibodies In Herpes Simplex Encephalitis, Jefin Jose Jan 2021

N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Antibodies In Herpes Simplex Encephalitis, Jefin Jose

VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals

Despite the relatively-low prevalence of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (HSE), it is among the most fatal forms of brain inflammation. In the present study, Pruss et al. seeks to determine the presence of and quantify the specific immunity towards the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate receptor (NMDAR), a synaptic protein, in serum and CSF from patients diagnosed with HSE through PCR techniques. The results showed that up to 30% of patients with HSE also developed anti-NMDAR immunity, demonstrating the presence of a causal relationship. The underlying reason for this association remains unclear.

Neuropathology Of Parkinson Disease, Jefin Jose Jan 2021

Neuropathology Of Parkinson Disease, Jefin Jose

VCU's Medical Journal Club: The Work of Future Health Professionals

Parkinson's disease until now has been characterized by a number of symptoms rather than an underlying cause. In Dr. Dickson's review of autopsy patients, he discovered the development of Lewy bodies (α-synuclein aggregates) in over 75% with Parkinson's disease postmortem. Several of these patients were misdiagnosed with other disorders such as multiple system atrophy or corticobasal degeneration. Dr. Dickson's survey of Parkinson's brains in the Mayo Clinic brain bank confirms the utility of postmortem investigation and the prevalence of Lewy body disease in Parkinson's patients.

Impact Of Stress Management Strategies And Intervention On The Mental Health Of Farmers: A Critically Appraised Topic, Logan Anderson, Zach Gascho, Nicole Gentry, Ashley Vannelli

Critically Appraised Topics

The dynamic transactions between the environment, person, and occupation play a role in the success of the farmer, their access to healthcare, and their willingness to seek support with their stressors or difficulties. Depression, stress, and other mental health conditions are highly prevalent within the farming community. This population is less likely to seek out and utilize available mental health resources and services, and in many cases, mental health resources are not available in rural areas (Gunn et al., 2021; Kennedy et al., 2020).

Best Interventions For Working Adults Experiencing Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain, Hailey Koep, Samantha Larson, Michelle Mcnamee

Critically Appraised Topics

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is defined as ongoing pain felt in the bones, joints, and tissue of the body that persists for longer than three months (Booth et al., 2017; Joelsson et al., 2017). Worldwide, 30% of the population has experienced some form of chronic pain in their lifetime (Guy et al., 2020). When living with chronic pain, it can become difficult for working adults to engage in their everyday occupations such as activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), health management, social participation, and leisure (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2020). These troubles can affect an …

Interventions That Reduce Anxiety And Depression To Support Mediation Of Lifestyle Balance In Middle School Students, Briana M. Kent, Aleksander R. Kohn, Cammy C. Robertson

Critically Appraised Topics

Mental health disorders are internationally known as a leading cause of disability throughout almost 20% of the adolescent population experiencing devastating mental health problems. Current statistics note that the prevalence of impaired mental health within this population has increased by 21% from 2001 to 2011, indicating a continuation of severe effects from poor mental health on this vulnerable population (Danielson et al., 2020). Allison et al. (2014) estimated that at the time the article was written, 14 million children in the United States had a mental health disorder that interfered with their daily life. Research from the Centers for Disease …

Neuroglobin And Its Role In The Recovery Of Neuronal Cells In Hypoxic Conditions Using Hypoxia Inducible Factor– 1, Riya Shah

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Stroke is the world's leading cause of adult disability, caused by lack of oxygen and nutrients to the brain due to a blood clot in a major artery. This leads to ischemic damage of neuronal cells that leads to paralysis, motor, and speech deficits. While most stroke therapies aim at removing or reducing the blood clots in the brain, few treatments target cell damage. Neuroglobin (NGB) is a protein in the brain that is able to aid in neuroprotection following oxidative stress. Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 (HIF-1) is a transcription factor that serves as a marker for cell recovery after hypoxia or …

The Impact Of Immersive Virtual Reality On Procedural Pain In Children And Adolescents, Abigail J. Dannels Jan 2021

The Impact Of Immersive Virtual Reality On Procedural Pain In Children And Adolescents, Abigail J. Dannels

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Children commonly undergo uncomfortable and often times painful procedures, including those that may not be perceived as painful to adults (Çelikol, Büyük, & Yıldızlar, 2019). It is important to note when a child's pain is poorly managed, it causes adverse effects related to their well-being and reduces their ability to cope effectively with pain in the future (Gates et al., 2020). Virtual reality (VR) has been used in a multimodal approached to manage acute pain in adults, but there is little research related to its use in treating procedural pain in children and adolescents. This thesis reviewed the published research …

Post-Traumatic Hallux Valgus: A Modified Surgical Technique, Zylyftar Gorica, Kimberly Mcfarland, John S. Lewis Jr, Karl M. Schweitzer Jr, Alexander R. Vap

Orthopaedic Surgery Publications

Post-traumatic hallux valgus, a turf toe variant, is a rare, yet limiting injury. According to the literature, the deformity has been associated with acute medial collateral ligament tears, turf toe variant injuries, Lisfranc injury patterns, and first metatarsal fractures. There have been few documented cases of post-traumatic hallux valgus secondary to medial collateral ligament tears, and the treatment has been variable. Some authors have described direct end-to-end repair of the ligament to address the deformity, while others have described a modified McBride bunionectomy involving a Silver bunionectomy, lateral soft tissue release, and medial capsular and ligamentous repair. We propose a …
