Objectives

To address the disproportionate burden of preterm birth (PTB) in low- and middle-income countries, this study aimed to (1) verify the performance of the United States-validated spontaneous PTB (sPTB) predictor, comprised of the IBP4/SHBG protein ratio, in subjects from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Tanzania enrolled in the Alliance for Maternal and Newborn Health Improvement (AMANHI) biorepository study, and (2) discover biomarkers that improve performance of IBP4/SHBG in the AMANHI cohort.

Background: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of Vancomycin (VCM) is required to prevent inappropriate dosage-associated bacterial resistance, therapeutic failure, and toxicities in pediatrics. Anecdotal experience and studies show that many healthcare institutions confront barriers while implementing TDM services, this study aimed to assess a pharmacist-directed VCM-TDM service for optimizing patient care in our institution.

The quality of life (QOL) of post-stroke patients can be assessed from the reports of patients themselves obtained through a structured interview or a questionnaire. However, some individuals are unable to comprehensively describe their QOL because of language disorders, cognitive effects caused by stroke, or pre-existing conditions. This study aims to identify differences in post-stroke QOL perception between patients and caregivers. A cross-sectional design involving 115 stroke patients and 115 caregivers was adopted, and Mann–Whitney test was used for statistical analysis. Results showed no significant difference in QOL perception (p = 0.166; α < 0.05), particularly in the physical (p = 0.278; α < 0.05), psychological (p = 0.068; α < 0.05), social relationship (p = 0.976; α < 0.05), and environmental (p = 0.157; α < 0.05) domains between patients and caregivers. Therefore, information from caregivers can be used to assess QOL when patients are incapable of reporting their condition.

This study aimed to explore the meaning of the lived experiences of young adults inside the prison system. The phenomenological inquiry was utilized, which is grounded in Martin Heidegger’s philosophy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 to 29-year-old inmates incarcerated for at least one year. Emerging evidence has uncovered the pivotal functions exerted by the small leucine-rich proteoglycans, decorin and biglycan, in affecting tumor growth and progression. In their soluble forms, decorin and biglycan act as powerful signaling molecules. Deep overbite can be corrected by intrusion of anterior teeth, extrusion of posterior teeth, or a combination of both. Condylar resorption can be challenging to orthodontist when encountered during treatment. The clinical characteristics and cephalometric findings of a patient who experienced postoperative skeletal relapse caused by progressive condylar resorption (CR) are presented in this case report. The predisposing factors and treatment protocols of condylar resorption are also discussed. A 17-year-old female patient came to our hospital with chief complaint of no contact of anterior teeth. Cephalometric analysis shows that she is a patient with skeletal Class II hyper-divergent pattern caused by mandibular retrognathism. Flattened left condylar head was found on panoramic film suggesting possible condylar erosion in the past. …

This case report presents successful orthodontic management of unilateral retained deciduous second molars and congenitally missing second premolars using an additional anchorage in conjunction with the segmented arch approach. A 21-year-old female patient presented as skeletal Class I malocclusion, mild crowding, straight facial profile, and orthodivergent facial pattern. The treatment plan was established to extract deciduous teeth and close the extraction space by molar protraction. Purpose: LeFort I osteotomy is used to correct and improve the maxillary hypoplasia in secondary cleft deformities. However, surgical complex and challenge would be the risk factor of postsurgical instability. This study compared surgical and postsurgical changes in maxillary and mandibular movements and stability in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) who underwent single- or two-piece LeFort I osteotomies.

Materials and Methods: Forty-five patients with CLP were included, of whom 30 and 15 received single- and two-piece LeFort I osteotomies, respectively. Cone-beam computed tomography was administered at three time points (T0: presurgery; T1: <1-month postsurgery; and T2: ≥1-year postsurgery) to evaluate surgical (T1–T0) and postsurgical (T2–T1) changes in maxillary and mandibular movement and stability. The overall movement, arch width, and relapse rate were measured and compared between the groups. Potential factors influencing skeletal stability were surgical change, segmental maxilla, cleft types, age, sex, and prior alveolar bone graft placement were analyzed.

EBV infection occurs in around 10% of gastric cancer cases and represents a distinct subtype, characterized by a unique mutation profile, hypermethylation, and overexpression of PD-L1. Moreover, EBV positive gastric cancer tends to have higher immune infiltration and a better prognosis. EBV infection status in gastric cancer is most commonly determined using PCR and in situ hybridization, but such a method requires good nucleic acid preservation.
