Background: All self-reported dietary intake data are characterized by measurement error, and validation studies indicate that the estimation of energy intake (EI) is particularly affected. Methods: Using self-reported food frequency and physical activity data from Alberta’s Tomorrow Project participants (n = 9847 men 16,241 women), we compared the revised-Goldberg and the predicted total energy expenditure methods in their ability to identify misreporters of EI. We also compared dietary patterns derived by k-means clustering under different scenarios where misreporters are included in the cluster analysis (Inclusion); excluded prior to completing the cluster analysis (ExBefore); excluded after completing the cluster analysis (ExAfter); …

Osteoporosis and sarcopenia are diseases which affect the myoskeletal system and often occur in older adults. They are characterized by low bone density and loss of muscle mass and strength, factors which reduce the quality of life and mobility. Recently, apart from pharmaceutical interventions, many studies have focused on non-pharmaceutical approaches for the prevention of osteoporosis and sarcopenia with exercise and nutrition to being the most important and well studied of those. The purpose of the current narrative review is to describe the role of exercise and nutrition on prevention of osteoporosis and sarcopenia in older adults and to define …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication of cardiac surgery, which can lead to higher mortality and long-term renal function impairment. The effect of perioperative renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASi) therapy on AKI incidence in patients undergoing cardiac surgery remains controversial. We reviewed related studies in PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library from inception to February 2020. Two randomized controlled trials and 21 cohort studies were included in the meta-analysis, involving 76,321 participants. The pooled odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model. The results showed no significant association between perioperative RASi therapy and …
News Media Trust And Mistrust During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kaitlyn Seiter
News Media Trust And Mistrust During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kaitlyn Seiter
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the uncertainty and growing information surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, news media consumption has increased drastically compared to pre-pandemic consumption. At the start of the pandemic, 94% of Americans reported closely following COVID-19 news, with more than half of Americans spending more than two hours consuming COVID-19 news everyday (SSRS, 2020). With the news media serving as a critical source of information through this public health crisis, the public’s reactions, behaviors, and attitudes to the pandemic stem from the level of trust they have in the news media to share COVID-19 information. Because of this, this study examines trust in …

Impact Of Fish Oil On Intestinal Permeability, Inflammation, And Performance In Swine, Anthony Fernando Alberto
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Our research examined the effects of fish oil supplementation on intestinal permeability, systemic inflammation and performance in piglets. An lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge was done to stimulate the synthesis and release of the cytokines, in an effort to mimic the immune response that piglets would have when facing stress or pathogen challenge. Fish oil increased feed intake but did not affect growth when compared to control. Total fatty acid digestibility increased by 6% when fish oil was included in the diet. Also, we observed a 16% increase on 16-carbon fatty acids digestibility. Fish oil did not affect the plasma …

Background: African trypanosomiasis, which is mainly transmitted by tsetse flies (Glossina spp.), is a threat to public health and a significant hindrance to animal production. Tools that can reduce tsetse densities and interrupt disease transmission exist, but their large-scale deployment is limited by high implementation costs. This is in part limited by the absence of knowledge of breeding sites and dispersal data, and tools that can predict these in the absence of ground-truthing. Methods: In Kenya, tsetse collections were carried out in 261 randomized points within Shimba Hills National Reserve (SHNR) and villages up to 5 km from the reserve …

Gravid female Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes identify suitable oviposition sites through a repertoire of cues, but the influence of allelochemicals, especially root phytochemicals in modulating this behavior and impacting subsequent progeny bionomics remains unexplored. We addressed these questions in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and its invasive host plant Parthenium hysterophorus. Using chemical analysis combined with laboratory behavioral assays, we demonstrate that a blend of terpenes, namely α-pinene, α-phellandrene, β-phellandrene, 3-carene and (E)-caryophyllene emitted from P. hysterophorus root exudate treated-water attracted gravid females. However, fewer eggs (55%) hatched in this treatment than in control water (66%). The sesquiterpene lactone parthenin, identified …

Background: Trypanosoma brucei species are motile protozoan parasites that are cyclically transmitted by tsetse fly (genus Glossina) causing human sleeping sickness and nagana in livestock in sub-Saharan Africa. African trypanosomes display digenetic life cycle stages in the tsetse fly vector and in their mammalian host. Experimental work on insect-stage trypanosomes is challenging because of the difficulty in setting up successful in vitro cultures. Therefore, there is limited knowledge on the trypanosome biology during its development in the tsetse fly. Consequently, this limits the development of new strategies for blocking parasite transmission in the tsetse fly. Methods: In this study, RNA-Seq …

The supraspinal connectome consists of dozens of neuronal populations that project axons from the brain to the spinal cord to influence a wide range of motor, autonomic, and sensory functions. The complexity and wide distribution of supraspinal neurons present significant technical challenges, leading most spinal cord injury research to focus on a handful of major pathways such as the corticospinal, rubrospinal, and raphespinal. Much less is known about many additional populations that carry information to modulate or compensate for these main pathways, or which carry pre-autonomic and other information of high value to individuals with spinal injury. A confluence of …

Abstract
The landscape of modern parenting has shifted as an increasing number of parents have and utilize smartphones and other mobile devices throughout the day. A validated measure of parent distraction with these devices is needed in the field. It is important to have a validated measure of parent distraction with mobile devices (e.g., phubbing, technoference), as this distraction can be common at times and could negatively impact the quality of parenting that children receive. In the current study, I developed a brief, parent-reported survey measure of parent distraction (DISRUPT), examined its reliability and validity (convergent, divergent) in two survey …

Banteng (Bos javanicus), an endangered, wild ungulate, plays a major role in seed dispersal and as a prey animal in Thailand. The population of wild banteng is threatened by poaching and habitat losses. Captive breeding management of banteng has been established and reintroduction of banteng has been successful in some areas. This study investigated the genetic variation of wild and captive banteng, based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the Y-chromosome. The mtDNA analysis revealed three novel maternal haplotypes. The Y-chromosome analysis showed two Y-chromosome haplotypes based on the SRY region in the Thai population. This region may be useful as …

Elemental sulfur has been used for a long time to treat superficial mycoses in both medical and veterinary practices, but effective treatment requires high concentrations of sulfur. Encapsulation of sulfur in nanoparticles can potentially allow the delivery of high concentrations of sulfur to infections. Sulfur nanoparticles were synthesized from Catharanthus roseus extract and sodium sulfide at various pH conditions (4, 6, and 7). Particle identification and characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic light scattering analysis. Broth microdilution and time-kill assays were used to determine the antifungal effect against Microsporum canis DMST29297. The …

The cross-sectional study was carried out from 20 farrow-to-finishing commercial swine farms in part of Thailand including the north (n=5), northeast (n=4), east (n=5), west (n=4) and south (n=1). A total of 589 fecal samples were randomly collected from 12 (n=200), 16 (n=196) and 20 (n=193) aged a week-old in each farm. All samples were analyzed for the detection of B. hyodysenteriae, L. intracellularis and …

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a mutual allergic skin disease between humans and dogs manifesting varieties of similarities in their immune responses to the disease. Recently, activation-induced cell death (AICD) of NK cells was acknowledged as a novel disrupted immunoregulation in human AD. To gain insight into its plausible commotion in canine AD, NK cell expression profiles extracted from PBMC Drop-Sequencing (Drop-Seq) data of normal and AD dogs were analyzed along with human NK cell profiles of healthy and AD patients previously reported. According to the results, a total of 2,689 differentially expressed genes (DEG) between healthy and AD conditions (P≤0.0001) …

Blastocystis is a unicellular anaerobic intestinal protist primarily of various animal species worldwide, and has been reported to inhabit humans as well. Blastocystis infections and subtype identification have been documented in China, although infections by the protist in quail remain unknown. Herein, a total of 128 fecal samples were collected from captive quails (Coturnix coturnix) in Xinxiang city, central China, and tested for the prevalence and genetic characteristics of Blastocystis. Ten (7.8%) samples were positive by PCR amplification and sequencing the barcode regeion of the SSU rRNA gene. Sequence analysis showed that ST7 was the predominant subtype with max identity …

A 1-year-old castrated male Ragdoll who showed a series of vomiting and had reduced appetite presented to a local animal hospital. Hyperthermia and tachypnea were observed in physical examination, and leukocytosis was detected in hematological examination. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an intramural mass with irregular echogenicity extending from the pylorus to the duodenum and loss of intestinal wall layer with regional lymph node enlargement. After exploratory laparotomy for biopsy and symptomatic alleviation, histopathological evaluation revealed densely infiltrated eosinophils within the branching and anastomosing trabecular pattern of collagen by several spindle-shaped cells. Finally, the patient was diagnosed with feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing …

Acquired idiopathic megaoesophagus in dogs is rarely found in Indonesia. In this case report, a dachshund dog was presented with a history of vomiting after eating. Clinical examination, complete blood count, kidney, and liver tests identified only minor dehydration. On observation of the dog after eating, the sign reported as vomiting was confirmed as regurgitation. Radiography and contrast studies identified a significantly dilated oesophagus. With an absence of other clinical abnormalities, the dog was diagnosed with idiopathic megaoesophagus and prescribed treatment with sildenafil twice daily at 0.75mg/kg for five days, along with postural management of feeding. Treatment resulted in cessation …
