Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. However, the molecular mechanisms associated with the development of metastasis is poorly understood. Understanding the biology of LC metastasis is critical to unveil the molecular mechanisms for designing targeted therapies. We developed two genetically engineered LC mouse models- KrasG12D ;Trp53R172H/+ ;Ad-Cre (KPA) and KrasG12D ; Ad-Cre (KA). Survival analysis showed significantly (P=0.0049) shorter survival in KPA tumor-bearing mice as compared to KA, suggesting the aggressiveness of the model. Our transcriptomic data showed high expression of St6galnac-I in KPA compared to KA tumors. ST6GalNAc-I is an O-glycosyltransferase, which …

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is a persistent global health problem with a high mortality rate. Currently, TB is controlled by administering the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, but the effectiveness of its protection varies among individuals in a population. The pe/ppe gene family comprises a typical group of genes that play a role in avoiding the host immune response and inducing persistent TB infection. Based on in silico analysis, the pe11 gene has estimated immunogenicity and potential as a TB seed vaccine candidate. The pe11 gene from an Indonesian isolate of an M. …

Ion Channel Candidates Mediating Orexin Neuropeptide Actions On Brainstem Serotonergic Neurons, Saqlain Javed Mar 2021

Ion Channel Candidates Mediating Orexin Neuropeptide Actions On Brainstem Serotonergic Neurons, Saqlain Javed

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

A loss of neurons that synthesize the neuropeptide orexin produces the sleep disorder narcolepsy with cataplexy in humans and other animals. How symptoms of this disorder arise is not well understood, but selectively restoring orexin actions at 5-HT DR neurons rescues key symptoms (cataplexy), suggesting normal orexin signaling is important at these neurons. To better understand how orexin acts on these neurons, our lab identified a set of novel orexin actions that appear mediated by unidentified cation- permeable ion channels. To narrow down the list of possible channels, we used a bioinformatics approach to compare published gene expression profiles of …

Determining The Effects Of Exogenous Human Chorionic Gonadotropin And Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin On Plasma Testosterone, Testicular Volume, And Semen Production In Leopard Geckos (Eublepharis Macularius), Alexandra Mason

LSU Master's Theses

Planet earth has now entered into its sixth mass extinction as a result of expanding human populations, posing an unprecedented threat to biologic diversity. Climate change, habitat fragmentation, wildlife trade, pollution, and biological invasions are just a few consequences of human activities that have directly contributed to unprecedented species extinctions. While widespread amphibian declines have gained more recent attention, it has been proposed that reptiles may be in even greater danger of extinction worldwide. Unfortunately, many reptiles are destined to go extinct before many of their basic biologic traits, including reproductive methods, have even been determined.

In order to mitigate …

We’Ve Got Your Back: New Studies In Spinal Cord Regeneration, Joshua Pandian Mar 2021

We’Ve Got Your Back: New Studies In Spinal Cord Regeneration, Joshua Pandian

Osmosis Magazine

Every day, the spinal cord transmits messages between the brain and body at speeds of 270 miles per hour. The spinal cord allows us to walk, run, or swim. However, for 200,000 Americans who suffer from spinal cord injury (SCI), simply standing up is often not a possibility. This number rises by approximately 17,000 cases a year as a result of sports injuries, car accidents, motorcycle collisions, or falls. Unlike many cells in the body, the neurons in the spinal cord cannot regenerate after an injury, which means spinal cord injuries tend to last for the remainder of one’s lifetime.

Illuminating Health Disparities: The Untold Story Of Black Women’S Pregnancies, Kacy Workman

Osmosis Magazine

Recent studies have found that Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than White women. Researchers in the 1990s examined data surrounding specific pregnancy complications such as postpartum hemorrhage, finding that although prevalence rates were similar between White and Black women, Black women with these conditions were 2-3 times more likely to die than their White counterparts. Despite medical advances, these rates have not improved over time. Data analyses examining maternal mortality from 2005 – 2014 reveal that mortality rates for Black women have actually increased from 39 to 49 deaths for every 100,000 live …

What if I told you there is a scientifically proven way of adding time to your life that is as simple as reading a few chapters of your favorite book? A study performed at Yale University School of Public Health compared the longevity of people who read books to those who only read periodicals. Those conducting the study predicted that the book-readers would have increased levels of survival, as reading books has been shown to promote two distinct cognitive properties tied to longevity.
