Tucked In: Weighted Blankets To Improve Sleep In Intensive Care Unit Patients, Jaime Conway Apr 2021

Tucked In: Weighted Blankets To Improve Sleep In Intensive Care Unit Patients, Jaime Conway

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Sleep deprivation is ubiquitous in hospital settings and deleterious to patients’ health. Specifically, sleep deprivation has been reported to play a role in multiorgan dysfunction, leads to poor critical illness outcomes, and can be considered a risk factor for delirium, a highly prevalent disease in intensive care units with even greater implications. To date, there are no evidence-based pharmacological interventions for sleep deprivation, and have even resulted in more adverse effects. However, non-pharmacological solutions have had limited efficacy, displaying a need for novel therapeutic options. In this randomized control trial, we will investigate and compare mean lengths of total sleep …

Metformin And Statin’S Effect On Prostate Cancer Risk In Diabetics With Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, Kevin Mugno Apr 2021

Metformin And Statin’S Effect On Prostate Cancer Risk In Diabetics With Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, Kevin Mugno

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Prostate cancer, a leading cause of cancer mortality, is associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Additionally, individuals with type 2 diabetes have a diminished prostate cancer risk. Metformin and statins are routinely used in the management of diabetes; however, it is unclear whether the combination of metformin and statins can reduce the incidence of prostate cancer in men with a concurrent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and benign prostatic hyperplasia. This study will determine whether combination treatment of metformin and statins lowers the incidence of prostate cancer in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia and type 2 diabetes. Using a retrospective cohort …

Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez Apr 2021

Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

The prevalence of depression is particularly high in the Latinx population, and this population is associated with lower rates of depression diagnosis and treatment. One intervention that has shown to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. Though the effects of culturally adapted therapy, language being the most common adaptation, have been studied, the difference in outcomes for bilingual, bicultural speakers has not been examined. In this randomized control trial, we will compare the effectiveness of Spanish language cognitive behavioral therapy to that of English language therapy in bilingual, foreign-born, Latinx patients with depressive symptoms. …

Training Pediatricians To Support Families Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Queer Youth, Siena Tice Apr 2021

Training Pediatricians To Support Families Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Queer Youth, Siena Tice

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth have an increased risk of mental health disorders. Family support of the child’s sexual orientation or gender identity can mitigate this increased risk when families are provided the proper tools. Pediatricians have the potential to strengthen the parent/child relationship, but few pediatricians receive training in how to guide parents appropriately and accurately. In this randomized controlled trial, we test whether receiving the Family Acceptance Project training increases pediatricians’ self-efficacy in engaging parents to support their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer child. We will utilize a waitlist control arm to examine the change …

Vitamin E Alpha-Tocopherols To Prevent Recurrent Stroke In Patients With A Minor Neurovascular Event, Veronica Guirguis Apr 2021

Vitamin E Alpha-Tocopherols To Prevent Recurrent Stroke In Patients With A Minor Neurovascular Event, Veronica Guirguis

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Minor ischemic strokes and transient ischemic attacks involve impaired perfusion to corresponding brain regions leading to neurological deficits that may or may not resolve after the event. Adults suffering one of these minor neurovascular events have high odds of a recurrent stroke within the first 90 days, mitigated but not prevented by standard treatment of clopidogrel and aspirin. Vitamin E alpha-tocopherols have been shown to reduce platelet aggregation, potentiate aspirin, and reduce ischemic damage. This study will assess the efficacy of vitamin E alpha-tocopherol, in addition to the standard treatment, on stroke recurrence in adults with a minor neurovascular event …

The Emotional Effects Of Mindfulness, Meditation, And Worldview, Jason Katz Apr 2021

The Emotional Effects Of Mindfulness, Meditation, And Worldview, Jason Katz

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

Much research on mindfulness and meditation investigates the relationship between mindfulness practices and health in physiological, psychological, and neurological contexts and organizations have implemented mindfulness training programs, possibly after learning of the apparent benefits. Researchers should use caution when assessing the practice’s benefits and consider extraneous variables such as the possibility that meditators tend towards spirituality; theologians argue that underlying beliefs might contribute to mindfulness practitioners’ reactions to the physical and psychological changes that result from mindfulness practices. This study investigates if and how religious beliefs modify mindfulness’s emotional outcomes for Bryant University students. The findings suggest that mindfulness and …

Improving The Nurse Patient Assignment Process On A Medical Surgical Unit, Kevin K. Mcewan Apr 2021

Improving The Nurse Patient Assignment Process On A Medical Surgical Unit, Kevin K. Mcewan

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Nurse patient assignments on an adult medical surgical unit at a community hospital are often accomplished with inconsistent processes and rationales. Each charge nurse utilizes individualized processes to determine which patients will be best teamed-up and assigned to the available nurses. There are frequently no acuity measurements system or set criteria by which the number or types of patients can or should be assigned to any given nurse, nor are staff skill or competency considered in the assignment process.

Project Design: A pilot project was conducted on a medical/surgical unit. The project utilized the American Association of Critical Care …

Effects Of Electrical Muscle Stimulation (Ems) And Active Recovery On Blood Lactate Levels, Andrew N. Mintz Apr 2021

Effects Of Electrical Muscle Stimulation (Ems) And Active Recovery On Blood Lactate Levels, Andrew N. Mintz

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a method of muscle recovery used by athletes before, during, and after competition. Active recovery is arguably the most popular recovery technique after intense exercise because of how much it reduces lactate levels in the blood. Few studies have analyzed the effects of EMS and active recovery on blood lactate levels in swimmers, and none have been found on the combination of the two. Therefore, there is an insufficient amount of information linking the two methods together for the purpose of maximizing blood lactate reduction. This study sought to analyze the effects that EMS and …

Yoga's Impact On Collegiate Male Soccer Player's Flexibility And Balance, Haley Church Apr 2021

Yoga's Impact On Collegiate Male Soccer Player's Flexibility And Balance, Haley Church

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters

As injuries increase in sports due to flexibility and balance issues, coaches and trainers strive to develop new techniques that can decrease the risk of injuries and improve overall performance of their athletes. The practice of yoga and its techniques have been associated with positive results in various aspects for decades. Most literature states that yoga does have a positive impact on flexibility and balance but lacks research on which type has the greatest impact (Polsgrove et al. 2016).

The Effect Of Static Versus Dynamic Stretching Programs On The Lower Body Power Assessments Of The Broad And Vertical Jumps On Male Collegiate Football Players, Antwann Mccray

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters

Football is a sport that requires power to be successful. The broad and vertical jumps are used for talent identification as it relates to power. Increases in range of motion should increase power and therefore better performance on the broad and vertical jumps. This study analyzed dynamic versus static stretching and its effects on jumping performance, determining which had a greater positive effect on performance. This study used skill players from the Gardner-Webb University football team. The participants participated in the study during their off-season training (15 weeks), but their respective stretching protocols were implemented into the training. To determine …
