Case Report: The Complexities Of Managing Medications And The Importance Of Deprescribing Anticholinergics In Older Adults, Taylor Elliott, Lynne Eckmann, Daniela C. Moga

Pharmacy Practice and Science Faculty Publications

Potentially inappropriate anticholinergic medications (including over-the-counter products), polypharmacy, and the existence of communication barriers among members of the interprofessional team frequently contribute to clinical complexity in older adults. We present the case of a frail 86-year old female from the perspective of a community pharmacist managing outpatient medications and transitions of care. CD’s past medical history is significant for dementia, multiple falls, recurrent urinary tract infections, depression, cardiac arrhythmia, macular degeneration, chronic pain, depression, and cerebrovascular disease.

Facility Attractiveness And Social Vulnerability Impacts On Spatial Accessibility To Opioid Treatment Programs In South Carolina, Parisa Bozorgi, Jan M. Eberth, Jeannie P. Eidson, Dwayne E. Porter

Faculty Publications

Opioid dependence and opioid-related mortality have been increasing in recent years in the United States. Available and accessible treatments may result in a reduction of opioid-related mortality. This work describes the geographic variation of spatial accessibility to opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and identifies areas with poor access to care in South Carolina. The study develops a new index of access that builds on the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method, and has three dimensions: a facility attractiveness index, defined by services rendered incorporated into the Huff Model; a facility catchment area, defined as a function of facility attractiveness to account …

Surface-Eroding Drug Delivery Films For Sequential And/Or Intermittent Release Of Psychoactive Drugs, Jason Price Apr 2021

Surface-Eroding Drug Delivery Films For Sequential And/Or Intermittent Release Of Psychoactive Drugs, Jason Price

Honors Theses

ABSTRACT JASON BLAKE PRICE: Surface-Eroding Drug Delivery Films for Sequential and/or

Intermittent Release of Psychoactive Drugs For patients with psychiatric diseases, adherence to medication schedules, medication

errors, and abuse are common issues. Promising new forms of therapy for these patients, such as micro-dosed lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), where patients receive 10-20% of a full dose every third day, present further drug delivery challenges. Sequential or intermittent release of drugs from an implanted device could ensure long-term drug compliance, automate drug dosing during the life of the implant, and eliminate potential for abuse and medication errors. To this end, we generated …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Neutrophils play fundamental roles in innate immune response, shape adaptive immunity, and are a potentially causal cell type underpinning genetic associations with immune system traits and diseases. Here, we profile the binding of myeloid master regulator PU.1 in primary neutrophils across nearly a hundred volunteers. We show that variants associated with differential PU.1 binding underlie genetically-driven differences in cell count and susceptibility to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. We integrate these results with other multi-individual genomic readouts, revealing coordinated effects of PU.1 binding variants on the local chromatin state, enhancer-promoter contacts and downstream gene expression, and providing a functional interpretation for …

Preceptorship Within Accredited Nutrition And Dietetics Programs: A Pragmatic Mixed Methods Study, Angela K. Brekken

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this pragmatic mixed-methods study was to identify the factors that impact a nutrition professional’s preceptorship decision and potential solutions to combat preceptor shortages within accredited nutrition and dietetics programs. Homan’s social exchange theory provided the theoretical framework that if perceived costs of preceptorship outweigh the perceived benefits, then the activity will cease.

Phase one of the study included an online mixed-methods questionnaire. Phase two included a qualitative focus group and interview with self-identified volunteers from phase one. Quantitative analysis through SPSS included descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (one-way ANOVA). Qualitative data for both …

Use Of Electronic Health Records In The Usa: A Lesson For Nigeria, Akinade Akindele, Opeyemi Soyemi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract: The use of Electronic Health Records by healthcare providers has proved to be critical to achieving the triple aim of improved healthcare quality, increased efficiency as well as healthcare cost reduction. However, indiscriminate adoption and use of any technology like the EHR is also known to be prone to being counterproductive and a waste of resources. This paper seeks to extract the lessons from the experiences of the U.S in their adoption and use of the EHR technology as a guiding strategy or blueprint for Nigeria in its quest to encourage the use of the technology in its healthcare …

Community Health Sciences

Undernutrition is a growing public health challenge affecting growth and development during adolescence in many low- and middle-income countries. This scoping review maps the evidence on adolescent undernutrition (stunting, thinness and micronutrient deficiencies) in South Asia and highlights gaps in knowledge. Using Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers' Manual, the search included electronic bibliographic databases (Medline (OVID), Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Scopus) as well as various grey literature sources published up to March 2019. In total, 131 publications met the inclusion criteria of this review. All the included evidence used quantitative …

Rationale
Child maltreatment and problematic parenting are related to negative outcomes for children. Poor parental health could be a risk factor for problematic parenting through several mechanisms: 1) inadequate emotional regulation and coping; 2) impairment of parental capacity; and, 3) impairment of the parent-child relationship.
Objective
This study examines relationships between self-rated parental health, prescription drug use, and a broad array of negative parenting outcomes.
Methods
A sample of general population parents of children aged ten and younger was recruited from 30 mid-sized cities in California (n = 681). Weighted mixed-effects negative binomial and logistic regression models were used to …

The Effects Of Cannabinoids On Individuals With Chronic Pain: A Critically Appraised Topic, Allison Birks, Julia Goodburn, Rick Loutsch Dat, Atc

Celebration of Research

Context: As of 2020, cannabis has been legalized for medicinal purposes in 33 states and the District of Columbia1. The most common reason for the use of medicinal cannabis treatments is chronic pain1,2. Within the cannabis plant there are two main components; delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Because of the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of cannabinoids and the fight against the opioid epidemic, there has been an increase in research of the effects of THC and CBD on patients experiencing chronic pain1,2,3. Objective: As the growth of this treatment method continues to increase, the …

Optimal Intramuscular Injection Site And Maximum Volume In Adult Population, Samantha Dowling, Austin Moss, Jessica Mouw

Celebration of Research

Intramuscular (IM) injections are a common, yet complex technique used to deliver medication into the muscles of the body. More than 12 billion IM injections are administered annually throughout the world (Jin et al., 2015). Unsafe injection practices can lead to further complications, such as “abscess, hematoma, ecchymosis, pain, and vascular and nerve injury” (Potter et. al., 2020, p.633). The choice of an injection site and needle length varies based on the volume to be administered, size of the patient’s muscle, and the patient’s body mass index (BMI). With the proper education, utilizing the best injection technique and optimal site …

Elucidating Antiproliferative Mechanisms Of Grapeseed, Guava, And Juniper Berry Extracts, Ali Almail, Noah Gritters, Colton Hage, Lauren Pavich, Dominick Pickard, Mitchell Rentschler, Ashley Van Egdom, Sara S. Tolsma

Celebration of Research

Plant extracts are an untapped source of medicinal potential. Even today they are used as standalone treatments and applied alongside conventional therapies. The focus of our laboratory is to identify plant extracts exhibiting antiproliferative activity in vitro, to determine which chemicals are responsible for this activity, and to elucidate mechanism(s) by which growth is slowed/inhibited by plant extracts. Specifically, we exposed five cell lines/strains to twenty-two plant extracts and measured cell proliferation. Extracts from Vinca, Juniper Berry, Guava, Grapeseed, and Yew slowed the growth of all five lines/strains in a dose dependent fashion. We are working to understand the mechanism …

Re-Engineered Hospital Discharge Program (Red), Mackenzie Bammer, Hayley Carlson, Morgan Roberts, Moriah Wittenberg

Celebration of Research

Between September 2020 and November 2020, an extensive literature review was done to determine how discharge education among medical-surgical patients can be improved. Results showed that there should be an introduction of discharge education from the start of a patient’s admission. Further, there needs to be greater understanding of specific roles within discharge and utilization of discharge material so as to improve patient satisfaction and self- perceived readiness for discharge. All efforts need to be placed to ensure that patients receive the best quality care and are not readmitted within 30 days of discharge.
